Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF ONE BULLETFor one terrible second Elena believed Adrian was dead.

Instinctive.

Protective.

Thomas Rowe lifted the gun.

“Don’t.”

Adrian stopped.

Celeste stood beside her father, pale but composed.

Her expensive dress from the gala had been replaced by black trousers and a coat.

“Elena,” Celeste said, “you should have stayed in the kitchen.”

Elena stared at her.

“And you should have learned not to hit people.”

Celeste’s jaw tightened.

Thomas laughed.

“That mouth explains why Victoria hated you.”

Adrian’s eyes remained on the gun.

“My mother paid you to make Elena disappear.”

“Your mother paid me to protect the family.”

“By stealing my child?”

Thomas tilted his head.

“We didn’t steal anyone.”

“You knew Elena was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s fists tightened.

“You knew I had a daughter.”

“For nine years.”

Something savage flashed in Adrian’s eyes.

Elena touched his arm.

Not because Thomas deserved protection.

Because Adrian did.

One reckless movement could kill them both.

Thomas gestured toward the desk.

“Give me the files.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“You destroyed ten years of my life.”

Thomas smiled.

“That is melodramatic.”

“You watched my daughter.”

“I monitored a risk.”

Elena’s face hardened.

“She is a child.”

“She is a voting interest worth billions.”

“She likes pancakes and astronomy.”

Thomas blinked.

Elena stepped from behind Adrian.

“She gets nervous during thunderstorms. She sings when she brushes her teeth. She keeps every birthday card anyone gives her. She is not a trust. She is not a voting interest. She is a little girl.”

Thomas raised the gun toward her.

Adrian instantly stepped between them.

“Point that at me.”

Celeste spoke.

“Dad, we need the documents.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Elena has them.”

Celeste walked closer.

Adrian looked at her.

“Did you know we were cousins?”

She stopped.

The silence answered.

Adrian’s stomach turned.

“You knew.”

Celeste’s eyes hardened.

“Biologically distant cousins.”

“Your father’s brother is my father.”

“We didn’t grow up together.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

The confession sickened him more than he expected.

“You were pushing me to marry you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Celeste laughed.

“Do you really want romance now?”

Adrian said nothing.

“You inherited an empire you had no biological right to inherit.”

“My father raised me.”

“Your legal father.”

“He was my father.”

“To you.”

Celeste pointed toward the files.

“Sarah Mercer was Charles Vale’s biological child. Elena is Sarah’s daughter. That makes Elena’s line the true Vale bloodline.”

Elena stared.

“So this was never about Ava.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not originally.”

Elena understood.

“It was about me.”

“Yes.”

Adrian turned toward her.

Sarah’s daughter.

Charles Vale’s granddaughter.

Under certain ancient trust provisions—

Elena may have had a stronger claim than anyone.

Thomas continued.

“Victoria discovered Sarah years after marrying Charles. She was terrified. If Sarah challenged the family structure, everything could change.”

“So she hid my mother,” Elena said.

“She paid generously.”

“My mother grew up working two jobs.”

Thomas shrugged.

“Her adoptive parents received the money.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“My mother never knew?”

“No.”

A lifetime stolen.

Again.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“And when Elena and I met?”

Thomas smiled.

“Victoria panicked.”

Because without knowing it, Adrian had fallen in love with the biological granddaughter of the man whose name he carried.

If they married, every competing claim would merge.

Victoria’s carefully constructed control would disappear.

“She separated us,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

“And when Elena became pregnant?”

“Victoria considered it catastrophic.”

Elena looked sick.

Thomas continued.

“A child combining Adrian’s controlling shares with Elena’s blood claim could eventually make every other beneficiary irrelevant.”

“Ava,” Elena whispered.

Thomas smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

Adrian lunged.

Elena grabbed him.

Thomas raised the gun.

“Careful.”

Celeste stepped closer to Elena.

“You could end this.”

“How?”

“Sign away any inheritance claim.”

Elena stared.

“I don’t want the Vale money.”

“Good.”

Celeste produced documents.

“Sign.”

Adrian said, “Don’t.”

“I don’t care about the company.”

“It isn’t about the company.”

He looked at her.

“It’s about letting people bully you into disappearing again.”

The words reached somewhere deep.

Elena looked at the papers.

Ten years ago, Victoria had frightened her into silence.

Tonight, Celeste had slapped her for refusing to bow.

Now Thomas held a gun and expected the same result.

Elena slowly pushed the documents away.

“No.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“You may want to reconsider.”

“No.”

“For your daughter’s sake.”

Adrian became still.

“What did you say?”

Thomas smiled.

Then Elena heard it.

Sirens.

Distant.

Growing louder.

Thomas turned toward the window.

Celeste looked terrified.

“What did you do?”

Adrian smiled for the first time.

“My security director knows where I am.”

Thomas raised the weapon.

“You think police will save you?”

“No.”

Adrian looked toward the hidden camera mounted above Victoria’s bookshelf.

“But the live recording might.”

Thomas followed his gaze.

His face collapsed.

Samuel had discovered the hidden surveillance system during the original search.

Adrian had deliberately returned knowing it was active.

Everything Thomas had confessed had been transmitted.

Celeste whispered, “Dad…”

Thomas fired.

The explosion deafened the room.

May you like

Elena screamed.

Adrian collapsed.
