Chapter 2 - The Eleven Missing MinutesDaniel ran beside the gurney until the doors of the maternity emergency unit closed in his face.

Not the pain.

Not the scream.

Not even the sight of Vanessa Sinclair standing over her in a blood-red gown.

The glass.

It slipped from Evelyn’s fingers, struck the marble floor of the private hospital suite, and shattered into a hundred glittering pieces.

Then Vanessa’s heel slammed into her side.

Evelyn was seven months pregnant.

The blow sent her crashing to the floor.

For one terrifying second, the billionaire’s wife couldn’t breathe.

Her arms wrapped instinctively around her stomach.

“Please,” Evelyn gasped.

Vanessa stared down at her.

There was no regret on her beautiful face.

Only fury.

“You ruined everything.”

Thirty floors below them, hundreds of donors were still drinking champagne at the Cross Foundation charity gala.

They had no idea that upstairs, behind a locked suite door, one of Manhattan’s most photographed women was curled on the floor protecting her unborn child.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You were supposed to be temporary.”

Evelyn struggled to understand.

“What are you talking about?”

“You.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Daniel never married women like you.”

Daniel Cross.

Thirty-eight.

Founder of Cross Meridian Technologies.

One of the youngest self-made billionaires in New York.

And Evelyn’s husband.

Before Daniel, Evelyn had been an emergency-room nurse working double shifts at St. Catherine’s Hospital.

They had met three years earlier after Daniel collapsed from exhaustion during a board presentation and was brought into her ER.

She hadn’t recognized him.

She had also refused to tolerate his arrogance.

Apparently, Daniel had fallen in love before being discharged.

Vanessa Sinclair had never forgiven either of them.

She had grown up beside Daniel.

Vacationed with his family.

Attended the same private schools.

Moved through the same circles.

Everyone had once assumed they would marry.

Everyone except Daniel.

Vanessa crouched beside Evelyn.

“Do you know how humiliating it was watching you take my place?”

“There was never a place to take.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Evelyn immediately knew she had said the wrong thing.

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

“I waited fifteen years.”

“Let go of me.”

“You appeared out of nowhere.”

Evelyn tried pulling away.

Vanessa shoved her backward.

Her shoulder struck the base of the marble table.

Pain exploded through her.

Then came the kick.

A brutal strike below her ribs.

Evelyn cried out.

That was when the door opened.

“EVELYN!”

Daniel’s voice tore through the suite.

Vanessa froze.

Daniel stood in the doorway wearing the black tuxedo he had worn downstairs.

Behind him were his security director, Grant Holloway, and Evelyn’s obstetrician, Dr. Lena Brooks.

Daniel’s face went white.

His pregnant wife was on the ground.

Vanessa stood above her.

Broken crystal glittered everywhere.

“Call emergency obstetrics,” Daniel barked.

Dr. Brooks was already moving.

Daniel dropped beside Evelyn.

“Baby.”

His voice broke.

“Look at me.”

“I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not.”

His hand hovered over her stomach, afraid to touch her.

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn began crying.

“Daniel, the baby—”

“We’re checking him right now.”

Vanessa suddenly sobbed.

Everyone turned.

“She attacked me!”

Daniel slowly looked up.

Vanessa pressed one hand against her cheek.

“She lost control. She accused me of sleeping with you. She grabbed me and I was only defending myself.”

Grant frowned.

Evelyn stared at her.

“You kicked me.”

“You came at me!”

“I’m pregnant!”

Vanessa’s crying became louder.

Daniel stood.

Something dangerous entered his expression.

“Enough.”

Vanessa immediately softened.

“Daniel, please. You’ve known me your whole life.”

“And I know my wife.”

“You didn’t see what happened.”

The room fell silent.

Vanessa seemed to realize she had found the one argument Daniel could not immediately answer.

He had arrived afterward.

There were no other witnesses.

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“You’re going to destroy me because you automatically believe her?”

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa’s confidence returned.

Then Grant Holloway looked toward the ceiling.

His eyes narrowed.

“Actually…”

Everyone followed his gaze.

Above the sitting area was a small black dome.

A security camera.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

Grant looked at Daniel.

“This suite was upgraded after the senator’s visit last month.”

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

Grant continued.

“Continuous recording.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Daniel’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“You said no one saw what happened.”

Vanessa stared at the camera.

A tiny green light blinked above her.

Once.

Twice.

Recording everything.

Dr. Brooks called from beside Evelyn.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

The doctor’s expression had changed.

“We need to move her.”

Daniel’s anger disappeared instantly.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m getting irregular fetal activity.”

Evelyn’s heart stopped.

Daniel dropped beside her again.

Dr. Brooks shouted toward the hallway.

“Get a gurney! Now!”

As medical staff rushed through the door, Evelyn grabbed Daniel’s hand.

“Don’t let anything happen to him.”

Daniel leaned down until his forehead touched hers.

“I won’t.”

Across the room, Vanessa quietly began backing toward the exit.

Grant stepped into her path.

“Going somewhere?”

She froze.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

There was no shouting.

No dramatic threat.

His voice was colder than anything Vanessa had ever heard.

“Make sure she doesn’t leave this hospital.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“Daniel—”

“And Grant?”

“Yes, sir?”

Daniel stared at the blinking camera.

“Get me that recording.”

For the first time that night, Vanessa Sinclair understood something terrifying.

She hadn’t just attacked Evelyn.

May you like

She had created evidence.

And somewhere inside the hospital’s security system, every shove, every threat, and every vicious kick was waiting to destroy her.
