Chapter 11 - The Woman Behind HalcyonDamian stared at his mother on the screen.

Literally.

The facility beneath an abandoned medical research building in Queens had once been used for private surgical trials.

Now it belonged to Halcyon.

Elena woke strapped to a medical table.

Vincent stood behind glass.

A surgeon examined the scar near her collarbone.

“You don't have to do this,” Elena said.

Vincent entered.

“You misunderstand.”

“I usually understand psychopaths pretty well.”

“I don't enjoy this.”

“That makes one of us.”

He almost smiled.

“Your father cost Halcyon hundreds of millions.”

“My heart bleeds.”

“His ledger can destroy people far beyond my organization.”

“Good.”

“He also hid access keys we need.”

“Inside me.”

“Yes.”

Elena swallowed.

“Pretty elaborate.”

“Thomas was clever.”

“Cleverer than you.”

Vincent's expression tightened.

She kept him talking.

Damian would come.

Not because she believed in fairy tales.

Because Damian Cole was constitutionally incapable of letting her win an argument without showing up.

Vincent leaned closer.

“Your father caused his own death.”

“No.”

“He could have disappeared quietly.”

“He did.”

“He kept investigating.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Good for him.”

Vincent straightened.

“Prepare her.”

The surgeon approached.

Elena's pulse spiked.

Then she remembered something.

Her father.

After the surgery seven years ago.

He had sat beside her hospital bed and joked:

Never trust anyone who tells you the treasure is where the scar is.

At the time she thought he meant emotional scars.

Now she understood.

The plate was a decoy.

“Wait.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You're making a mistake.”

“I'm sure you think so.”

“The code isn't in the plate.”

He froze.

“What?”

“My father knew you'd eventually figure that out.”

“Where is it?”

Elena smiled.

“You're the genius.”

Vincent grabbed her jaw.

“Where?”

She stared at him.

“Let Margaret go.”

He slapped her.

Not hard enough to injure.

Hard enough to threaten.

Elena tasted blood.

“You're losing patience,” she said.

“You're losing time.”

“So are you.”

An alarm sounded.

Vincent turned.

A guard rushed in.

“We have movement outside.”

“How many?”

“We can't tell.”

Vincent looked at Elena.

“Damian.”

She smiled.

“Told you.”

At the hospital, Damian had refused surgery until Nicholas threatened to sedate him personally.

The bullet had passed through muscle.

Painful.

Not fatal.

Two hours later he escaped the recovery room.

Nicholas found him putting on a shirt.

“You are unbelievable.”

“Elena said that.”

“You're medically unstable.”

“Elena said versions of that too.”

“How did you find her?”

Damian held up his phone.

“Elena stole one of Vincent's burner phones before he put her in the vehicle.”

Nicholas stared.

“She what?”

“She called my voicemail.”

“Why didn't she speak?”

“She couldn't.”

The voicemail contained thirty-eight minutes of ambient noise.

Traffic.

A train.

Aircraft.

Then a distinctive church bell.

Patrick mapped the route.

They narrowed it to Queens.

A security camera caught the vehicle entering the abandoned research property.

Damian looked at Nicholas.

“We go now.”

Nicholas smiled.

“You really love her.”

Damian glared.

“Drive.”

Halcyon's facility was heavily guarded.

Patrick coordinated police contacts who were not compromised.

Federal agents were alerted anonymously.

Damian had no intention of waiting.

He entered through an old service tunnel Nicholas found on architectural plans.

Two guards went down quietly.

Then the alarms began.

Damian stopped caring about quiet.

He reached the surgical wing.

Vincent's men were retreating.

One surrendered.

Another ran.

Damian found Elena's room empty.

Straps cut.

Blood on the floor.

His heart stopped.

“Elena!”

Nothing.

Then a voice behind him.

“You're loud.”

He turned.

Elena stood wearing stolen scrubs, holding a fire extinguisher.

Damian crossed the room in three strides.

He grabbed her.

She winced.

“My ribs.”

He immediately loosened his embrace.

“Sorry.”

Then hugged her again more carefully.

“You came.”

“Obviously.”

“You got shot.”

“So did you.”

“Competitive much?”

He kissed her forehead.

Then her mouth.

A gunshot sounded nearby.

Elena pulled away.

“Later.”

“Definitely.”

They found Vincent in the server room.

He was destroying hard drives.

Margaret was beside him.

Wait.

Damian froze.

His mother?

No.

Margaret had been rescued at the shipyard.

Elena stared.

The woman turned.

Same white hair.

Similar build.

But not Margaret.

Vincent laughed.

“Your mother was never the hostage.”

Damian's expression changed.

“What?”

“Margaret helped me.”

Elena felt sick.

“No.”

Vincent smiled.

“She arranged the entire exchange.”

Damian shook his head.

“My mother nearly died in the garage.”

“Exactly.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Do you know why the first bullet missed?”

Elena stared.

Because she had shoved Margaret.

Vincent continued.

“It was supposed to miss.”

Damian's blood went cold.

“The garage attack wasn't an assassination.”

“It was theater.”

Elena whispered, “To make Damian trust me?”

“No.”

Vincent smiled.

“To make Elena trust Margaret.”

The fake hostage stepped aside.

Behind the glass wall, a screen illuminated.

A live camera feed appeared.

Margaret Cole sat inside Damian's estate.

Alone.

Watching them.

She looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“I'm sorry, son.”

Then she pressed a button.

Every door in the facility locked.

A countdown appeared.

05:00

May you like

Vincent smiled.

“This building is wired to burn.”
