Chapter 7 - The Lie Beneath the LieThe hotel room erupted.

On the fourth, Daniel took the phone away.
“You’re not going.”
“She’s offering a trade.”
“She’s lying.”
“Probably.”
“Definitely.”
Detective Cole agreed.
“You walk into Mercer Tower carrying evidence, we lose control of the situation.”
Anna folded her arms.
“So what do we do?”
Cole looked at the cassette.
“We make copies.”
By sunrise, Claire Carter’s recording existed in twelve secure digital copies.
One went to police evidence.
One to Anna’s attorney.
Three were stored online.
Sam hid another somewhere he refused to disclose.
Then Anna did something nobody expected.
She called Evelyn.
Daniel tried to stop her.
Anna raised one finger.
Evelyn answered immediately.
“You’re becoming inconvenient.”
Anna’s pulse pounded.
“You burned Maria’s house.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Peter Sloan does.”
Silence.
Anna continued.
“I’ll meet you.”
Daniel mouthed, No.
Anna ignored him.
“Public place.”
“No police.”
“You don’t set every rule anymore.”
A long pause.
Then Evelyn named the Garden Court at the Langford Hotel.
Noon.
Anna ended the call.
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re insane.”
“Maybe.”
“She threatened you.”
“So did your mother when I rejected her check seven months ago. I ran then.”
She looked him directly in the eye.
“I’m done running.”
Detective Cole arranged plainclothes officers throughout the hotel.
Daniel waited in another room wearing an earpiece.
Anna entered the Garden Court alone.
Evelyn sat beneath a crystal chandelier.
Perfect posture.
Pearl earrings.
Tea already poured.
She looked at Anna’s stomach with undisguised disgust.
“You’ve made unfortunate choices.”
Anna sat.
“My first was believing your son came from a decent family.”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“You sound like Claire.”
“You remember her?”
“Unfortunately.”
Anna’s chest tightened.
“You knew she was my mother when Daniel brought me home.”
“Immediately.”
“And you said nothing.”
“What would you have preferred? ‘Welcome to dinner, Anna. You are my father’s illegitimate daughter’?”
Daniel listened from the next room, fists clenched.
Anna kept her voice steady.
“Did you fake the messages?”
Evelyn stirred her tea.
“Yes.”
The simple admission stunned Anna.
“Did you pay someone to photograph me entering that hotel?”
“Yes.”
“Who was the man?”
“One of my employees.”
“There was never an affair.”
“No.”
Anna’s eyes burned.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel intended to marry you.”
“So?”
Evelyn set down the spoon.
“So your existence already endangered the structure of our family trust. Marriage between you and Daniel would have brought attention to your identity.”
“You could have told us.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
“You imagine wealth survives through honesty?”
Anna felt disgust.
“You destroyed your son’s life.”
“I protected his.”
“You cost him his daughter’s entire pregnancy.”
For the first time, Evelyn’s eyes shifted.
Only slightly.
Anna noticed.
“Does that bother you?”
“No.”
“Liar.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“You think pregnancy makes you powerful?”
“No.”
Anna touched her belly.
“She makes me brave.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
Anna continued.
“Did you send Peter to Maria’s house?”
“I told Peter to retrieve the tape.”
Daniel’s eyes widened in the surveillance room.
Detective Cole immediately signaled the recording technician.
Anna asked, “Did you tell him to burn the house?”
“No.”
“Would you have cared?”
Evelyn said nothing.
There was the answer.
“Give me the tape,” Evelyn said, “and I will withdraw the accusations against Daniel.”
“He didn’t steal eighteen million dollars.”
“No.”
Another admission.
Daniel shut his eyes.
Anna’s voice sharpened.
“You fabricated that too?”
“I control internal accounting.”
“You framed your own son.”
“I disciplined him.”
Anna stared at the woman across from her.
For years, she had imagined wealth created safety.
Now she understood.
Money only magnified whatever lived inside the person holding it.
In Evelyn, it magnified fear.
Control.
Cruelty.
Anna stood.
“There is no original tape anymore.”
Evelyn froze.
“What?”
“Copies went everywhere this morning.”
For the first time, Evelyn Mercer lost composure.
“You foolish little girl.”
“No.”
Anna stepped away.
“I’m Claire Carter’s daughter.”
Evelyn rose.
“You have no idea what you’ve started.”
“I think you started it twenty-three years ago.”
Anna turned.
Then Evelyn said something that stopped her.
“Arthur Mercer wasn’t your father.”
Anna slowly faced her.
“What?”
Evelyn smiled again.
“The tape is wrong.”
“My mother said—”
“Your mother believed Arthur was the father.”
Daniel entered despite police instructions.
“Mother.”
Evelyn’s face tightened.
Daniel walked toward them.
“If Arthur wasn’t Anna’s father, who was?”
Evelyn looked between them.
Then she laughed softly.
“You truly don’t know.”
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
“Know what?”
“Arthur Mercer was infertile.”
Silence.
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“He never fathered any children.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
Evelyn continued.
“Not me.”
“Not Uncle Robert.”
“Not anyone.”
Anna whispered, “Then who was my mother involved with?”
Evelyn’s smile vanished.
“My husband.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Anna stared.
Evelyn delivered the final blow.
“Your father, Anna…”
She looked at Daniel.
“…was Charles Mercer.”
Daniel’s father.
Which meant Anna wasn’t Daniel’s aunt.
She was his half-sister.
And the baby she carried—
Anna’s vision blurred.
Daniel stepped backward as though struck.
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice was merciless.
“You wanted the truth.”
May you like
Then she looked at Anna’s stomach.
“There it is.”
