Chapter 9 - The Night Neither Remembered Clearly“No.”

Legally, he was caught inside a nightmare.

His birth records were fraudulent.

His guardianship paperwork listed Margaret as a temporary custodian under an identity that did not technically exist.

Sophie wanted to put him in the car and drive straight back to Chicago.

Ethan understood.

Their attorney did not.

“If you take him without a court order,” Elena Torres warned over speakerphone, “you risk turning a sympathetic family-reunification case into an interstate custody dispute.”

“He is my son,” Sophie said.

“I know.”

“He was stolen.”

“We still need to establish that legally.”

Daniel sat on the rug building a wooden train.

He glanced up occasionally.

Sophie lowered her voice.

“How long?”

“I’m requesting an emergency hearing tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“That is extraordinarily fast.”

“I lost five years.”

Elena softened.

“I know. Give me twelve more hours.”

Sophie closed her eyes.

“Fine.”

Margaret offered them the guest rooms.

Sophie refused to leave Daniel.

She slept on the living-room couch while he slept upstairs.

At three in the morning, tiny footsteps appeared on the stairs.

Sophie woke.

Daniel stood holding a blanket.

“What’s wrong?”

“I had a bad dream.”

Sophie sat up.

He hesitated.

“Can I sleep here?”

Her eyes filled.

“Of course.”

He climbed beside her.

For a few minutes, neither spoke.

Then Daniel whispered, “Are Lily and Noah really my brother and sister?”

“Yes.”

“They’re tiny?”

“Very.”

“Can I see them?”

“As soon as we get home.”

“Are they sick?”

“A little.”

“Will they die?”

Sophie swallowed.

“No.”

She could not know that.

But she had survived enough uncertainty.

“Your sister is very stubborn.”

“Like you?”

Sophie smiled.

“Who told you that?”

“Grandma Margaret.”

“Grandma Margaret talks too much.”

Daniel giggled.

The sound nearly broke her heart.

He closed his eyes.

“Mom?”

Sophie stopped breathing.

It was the first time.

Not Sophie.

Not birth mom.

Mom.

“Yes?”

“Can I call you that?”

She pressed her lips to his hair.

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

Within minutes, he slept.

Sophie cried silently until morning.

Ethan found them curled together beneath one blanket.

He stood at the doorway for a long time.

When Sophie woke, she saw him.

Neither spoke.

They did not need to.

The emergency custody hearing happened by video that afternoon.

DNA samples were collected.

Hospital evidence was submitted.

Margaret voluntarily testified that Daniel had been concealed from his biological mother through fraudulent records created under Richard Caldwell’s direction.

The judge granted Sophie temporary custody pending full review.

When the order arrived, Sophie read it three times.

Then she ran upstairs.

“Daniel?”

He looked up from packing dinosaurs into a backpack.

“Are we going?”

“Yes.”

“Home?”

Sophie smiled through tears.

“Home.”

Margaret stood by the front door.

The goodbye was harder than Sophie expected.

She was furious at the woman.

She was also painfully aware Margaret had loved Daniel when Sophie could not.

Daniel hugged her.

“Are you coming to visit?”

Margaret looked toward Sophie.

Sophie hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Margaret cried.

“I’d like that.”

Sophie stepped closer after Daniel went to the car.

“I don’t forgive you.”

“I understand.”

“But he loves you.”

“I love him.”

“So we’ll figure something out.”

Margaret nodded.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. Thank him.”

They drove toward Chicago.

Daniel talked for nearly an hour before falling asleep.

Ethan glanced at him through the mirror.

Then at Sophie.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Same.”

She smiled tiredly.

“He called me Mom.”

“I heard.”

“I thought my heart was going to stop.”

“He asked if I was rich.”

Sophie laughed.

“What did you say?”

“I said yes.”

“You could have pretended to be modest.”

“He asked if I had a helicopter.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Disappointing.”

“He told me rich people should have helicopters.”

“Reasonable.”

Ethan smiled.

Then his phone buzzed.

Elena.

The smile vanished as he read.

“What?” Sophie asked.

“Andrew filed for emergency custody of the twins.”

She sat upright.

“What?”

“He’s claiming you’re medically unstable and emotionally compromised.”

“Because I almost died?”

“He says your decision to travel after major surgery proves reckless judgment.”

Sophie went pale.

“He knew I traveled?”

Ethan looked into the mirror.

A black SUV had been following them for almost twenty miles.

His hands tightened on the wheel.

“I think someone followed us.”

Sophie turned.

“Where?”

“Don’t.”

“What do you mean don’t?”

“Daniel’s asleep.”

Fear moved across her face.

Ethan took the next exit.

The SUV followed.

He turned twice.

It followed.

Ethan called police.

Then hospital security.

Then Elena.

Twenty minutes later, state police stopped the SUV.

The driver was not Andrew.

It was a private investigator.

Hired by Andrew Hale’s law firm.

Legal.

Barely.

Sophie’s anger replaced fear.

“He is using my trauma to take my children.”

“He won’t succeed.”

“You don’t know that.”

“We have documentation that he abandoned you.”

“He’ll say he panicked.”

“We have the transfer he sent.”

“He’ll say he wanted to help.”

“We have messages.”

Sophie looked at him.

“You kept them?”

“I didn’t.”

“I did.”

Ethan smiled slightly.

“Good.”

Her phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

Andrew.

“I know you found another kid.”

Sophie went cold.

Ethan heard his voice.

“Put it on speaker.”

She did.

Andrew continued.

“You’ve been keeping secrets.”

Sophie stared ahead.

“You don’t get to talk about secrets.”

“I want my children.”

“You didn’t four months ago.”

“I changed my mind.”

“No. Your parents changed your mind.”

“My family has resources.”

“So do I.”

Andrew laughed.

“No, Sophie. Caldwell has resources. You have medical bills and warehouse paychecks.”

Daniel moved slightly in the back seat.

Sophie lowered her voice.

“Never call me again.”

“You can’t stop me from seeing my children.”

“I can stop you from terrorizing me.”

“You think Ethan loves you?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Andrew continued.

“You think the billionaire surgeon suddenly wants to play family with three kids?”

Sophie hung up.

Her hands trembled.

Ethan drove several miles before speaking.

“He’s wrong.”

“About what?”

“About me playing family.”

Sophie looked over.

“I don’t want to play anything.”

“Ethan.”

“I meant what I said.”

“You’re overwhelmed.”

“No.”

“My life is chaos.”

“I know.”

“My daughter just had surgery.”

“I know.”

“My son was hidden for five years.”

“I know.”

“I have another newborn in intensive care.”

“I know.”

“And some man I dated for eight months is trying to take both of them.”

“I know.”

She stared.

“And you still want in?”

Ethan looked at her.

“I never wanted out.”

The words silenced the car.

Daniel’s sleepy voice came from behind them.

“Are you two married?”

Both adults froze.

Sophie turned.

“No, honey.”

“Were you?”

“Almost.”

Daniel yawned.

“Why not now?”

Ethan coughed.

Sophie shot him a warning look.

“Complicated.”

Daniel nodded wisely.

“Grandma Margaret says grown-ups make easy things complicated.”

Ethan laughed.

“She sounds smart.”

Sophie looked out the window so he could not see her smile.

When they reached Chicago, the NICU staff arranged a special introduction.

Daniel stood beside Lily’s incubator.

“That’s my sister?”

“Yes,” Sophie said.

“She looks angry.”

“She gets that from your mother,” Ethan said.

Sophie elbowed him.

Daniel moved toward Noah.

“And him?”

“Your brother.”

Noah opened one tiny eye.

Daniel smiled.

“Hi.”

He placed his hand against the incubator.

“I’m Danny.”

Sophie cried.

Again.

She had accepted this would probably happen often.

Ethan stood behind her.

Without thinking, Sophie reached backward.

Her fingers found his hand.

He held on.

For one quiet minute, all five of them were together.

Sophie.

Ethan.

Daniel.

Lily.

Noah.

Not yet a family.

But something close enough to hurt.

Then Elena entered.

Her face was serious.

“We have another problem.”

Sophie sighed.

“What now?”

“The DNA results came back.”

Ethan looked toward Daniel.

Elena lowered her voice.

“Daniel is unquestionably yours.”

Sophie nodded.

“And?”

Elena looked at Ethan.

“The lab also ran the expedited samples Andrew requested for the twins.”

Sophie’s expression tightened.

“And?”

Elena paused.

“Andrew Hale is not their biological father.”

Silence.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Sophie’s face went completely blank.

“That’s impossible.”

“The result is conclusive.”

“No.”

“Sophie—”

“No. Andrew is their father.”

Elena looked at Ethan again.

“There’s more.”

Ethan already knew.

He knew before she said it.

“The lab detected a close paternal match already in the hospital system.”

Sophie slowly turned toward him.

May you like

Elena spoke quietly.

“The twins are Ethan’s.”
