Chapter 3 - The Secret Amara Was Never Supposed to HearSix months earlier, Amara had stayed late because Adrian’s mother’s old bedroom was being converted into a guest suite.

He had seen the billionaire threatened by angry competitors, stalkers, extortionists, and one former business partner who had attempted to enter Cross Tower with a handgun inside his briefcase.
Marcus rarely looked surprised.
When Adrian entered the estate’s security room and asked him to retrieve thirty days of interior footage, Marcus looked surprised.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
Marcus glanced toward Vanessa, who had followed Adrian down the hallway.
Chloe trailed several steps behind.
Amara and Evelyn remained upstairs.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“This is humiliating.”
Adrian ignored her.
Marcus turned toward the monitors.
The estate had thirty-two security cameras.
Most covered entrances, hallways, storage areas, garages, the wine cellar, and the large public rooms downstairs.
No cameras existed inside private bedrooms or bathrooms.
But there was one in the upstairs corridor outside the master suite.
And another outside Vanessa’s private dressing room.
Marcus entered several commands.
“Anything specific?”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Apparently there’s bedroom footage Chloe wants deleted.”
Chloe’s face tightened.
“I didn’t mean a bedroom camera.”
“What did you mean?”
“The hallway.”
Adrian turned back to Marcus.
“Start there.”
The first clips looked ordinary.
Staff carrying linens.
Vanessa entering and leaving.
Delivery workers transporting garment bags.
Then Marcus fast-forwarded to three days earlier.
Vanessa appeared in the hallway at 2:13 p.m.
She looked around.
Then she opened her dressing-room door.
Chloe stepped out.
They were both laughing.
Vanessa held something glittering between two fingers.
Marcus paused the video.
Adrian leaned closer.
The bracelet.
Vanessa’s missing bracelet.
Chloe shifted behind him.
Vanessa spoke quickly.
“That proves nothing.”
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Continue.”
On the video, Vanessa slipped the bracelet into Chloe’s handbag.
Then both women entered the bedroom.
There was no audio inside the room.
But the hallway microphone captured enough when the door remained partly open.
Chloe’s voice floated through the speakers.
“Tomorrow?”
Vanessa answered.
“No. Wednesday. Adrian gets back Friday.”
“And Amara?”
“She’ll be cleaning upstairs.”
A pause.
Then Chloe laughed.
“You’re evil.”
Vanessa’s response was soft but unmistakable.
“I’m getting rid of a problem.”
Adrian turned toward her.
Vanessa looked trapped.
“That conversation could mean anything.”
Marcus stopped the footage.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You planted the bracelet.”
“I didn’t.”
“You put it in Chloe’s bag.”
“For safekeeping.”
“Then why accuse Amara?”
Vanessa took a breath.
“Because I forgot I gave it to Chloe.”
Chloe immediately nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
Even he seemed offended by the weakness of the lie.
Adrian turned back to the screens.
“Keep going.”
Marcus pulled footage from that morning.
At 9:41 a.m., Vanessa met Chloe in the upstairs hallway.
Chloe removed the bracelet from her bag.
Vanessa took it.
Then she walked toward the guest wing.
Adrian frowned.
“What room is that?”
Marcus answered.
“Amara’s staff locker is in the service hall below that staircase.”
They watched Vanessa disappear from camera view for three minutes.
When she returned, her hands were empty.
Adrian felt something heavy settle in his stomach.
“Get Amara.”
Marcus called upstairs.
Two minutes later, Amara entered the security room.
She looked uncomfortable.
Her cut palm had been bandaged.
Adrian pointed at the monitor.
“Vanessa accused you of stealing this bracelet.”
“Yes.”
“Where did she say she found it?”
“She didn’t find it.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“Because she probably moved it.”
Adrian raised one hand.
Vanessa went silent.
He looked at Amara.
“Where are your personal belongings?”
“In a locker beside the staff laundry room.”
“Marcus.”
They moved.
Vanessa did not.
Adrian stopped at the door.
“You’re coming.”
“I’m not participating in this circus.”
“Then you can leave my house.”
The words silenced her.
“My house?”
Adrian’s expression did not change.
“Yes.”
Vanessa followed.
The staff laundry room sat at the rear of the estate.
Six lockers lined the wall.
Amara opened hers.
Inside were spare shoes, a cardigan, toiletries, and a small purse.
Marcus searched carefully.
Nothing.
Vanessa let out a breath.
Then Marcus noticed something behind the locker.
A thin black jewelry case was wedged between the metal frame and the wall.
He pulled it free.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Marcus opened it.
The bracelet lay inside.
Chloe whispered, “Oh my God.”
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“There. You see?”
Adrian looked at her.
“You think that helps you?”
“She hid it.”
“The camera showed you walking toward this room with it.”
“You didn’t see me put it there.”
Adrian stared at her for several seconds.
Then he turned to Marcus.
“Fingerprints.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You’re calling police over a bracelet?”
“No.”
Adrian closed the case.
“I’m calling them because someone tried to frame an employee for theft.”
Her expression changed.
That was when Amara spoke.
“Mr. Cross.”
Adrian turned.
She looked afraid.
“There is more.”
Vanessa snapped, “Don’t.”
The word came too fast.
Too sharp.
Adrian’s eyes moved between them.
Amara swallowed.
“For months, when you traveled, Miss Hart has been…”
She hesitated.
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“You should think very carefully before you lie about me.”
Adrian moved between them.
“Finish.”
Amara looked at him.
“She makes staff give her money.”
Adrian thought he had misheard.
“What?”
“She calls it a household penalty.”
Marcus frowned.
Amara continued.
“If someone breaks something, arrives late, answers her incorrectly, or does anything she dislikes, she takes money from our wages.”
“That’s ridiculous,” Vanessa said.
Amara shook her head.
“She took four hundred dollars from Luis last month.”
“The gardener?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because flowers died during the heat wave.”
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Amara answered.
“She told us you approved it.”
Adrian went still.
“She used my name?”
Amara nodded.
“And she said anyone who complained would be fired without a reference.”
Vanessa laughed.
“This is absurd.”
Another voice came from the doorway.
“It isn’t.”
Luis Mendoza stood there.
Behind him were two housemaids, the driver, and Evelyn.
One by one, members of Adrian’s staff had gathered.
Luis removed his cap.
“She charged me six hundred dollars.”
Vanessa stared.
“That is a lie.”
One housemaid lifted her phone.
“I have messages.”
Another said, “So do I.”
Evelyn walked forward.
“She took my Christmas bonus.”
Adrian turned toward the woman who had cooked for him since before his company went public.
“What?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger rather than tears.
“She said I had embarrassed her mother at Thanksgiving.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
His fiancée’s mask was slipping.
Not completely.
But enough.
Her mouth hardened.
“You’re really going to believe servants over me?”
Silence.
The word hung in the room.
Servants.
Adrian looked around at the people who had maintained his home, protected his privacy, cared for his mother during her final illness, and helped him live a normal life while his business consumed most of his time.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“They have names.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
That tiny gesture ended something inside him.
“Marcus,” Adrian said.
“Yes?”
“Pull every camera angle where Vanessa interacts with staff while I’m traveling.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You’re being insane.”
“Maybe.”
He looked at her engagement ring.
“Or maybe I’m finally paying attention.”
Within an hour, Marcus had created a folder containing forty-seven clips.
In one, Vanessa screamed at a maid for placing peonies in the wrong vase.
In another, she made Luis kneel in wet soil to replant a hedge while Chloe filmed him.
One clip showed Vanessa dumping an entire bowl of soup onto the kitchen floor because Evelyn had served it lukewarm.
Another showed her ordering the driver, Patrick, to wait outside in freezing rain because he had opened the rear passenger door too slowly.
But the clip that changed everything came from the previous Thursday.
It showed Vanessa standing in Adrian’s private study.
She should not have had access.
Adrian had biometric locks installed after confidential merger documents were stolen from an old residence years earlier.
Yet Vanessa entered easily.
She was accompanied by a man Adrian recognized.
Charles Grayson.
Adrian’s future father-in-law.
They remained inside for forty-one minutes.
When Charles left, he carried a black portfolio.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“What was in my study that day?”
Marcus checked the entry logs.
“You had board materials delivered that morning.”
Adrian remembered.
Confidential acquisition documents.
A deal worth more than $600 million.
Documents containing pricing information that could shift the stock price of three publicly traded companies.
Marcus opened another system.
“Your safe was accessed at 1:18 p.m.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
“By whom?”
Marcus looked confused.
“Your authorization.”
“I was in Tokyo.”
The room fell silent.
Vanessa backed toward the door.
Adrian slowly turned.
“How did you get into my safe?”
“I didn’t.”
“The system says my fingerprint opened it.”
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus enlarged another camera angle.
Vanessa could be seen carrying a transparent piece of flexible material into the study.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
A silicone fingerprint mold.
Someone had copied his biometric print.
Chloe whispered, “Vanessa…”
Vanessa rounded on her.
“Shut up.”
Adrian’s voice became deadly calm.
“What did your father take from my safe?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Vanessa.”
She stared at him.
Then she smiled.
Not sweetly.
Not apologetically.
Coldly.
“You think you built an empire because you’re smarter than everyone else.”
Adrian felt Marcus straighten beside him.
Vanessa continued.
“But rich men always make the same mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“They think the people sleeping beside them are harmless.”
Adrian looked at the woman he had planned to marry in sixteen days.
Then his phone rang.
It was his general counsel.
Adrian answered.
“Daniel?”
The attorney’s voice came fast.
“Adrian, we have a serious problem.”
“How serious?”
“Someone traded heavily against the Redwood acquisition twelve hours before our confidential offer leaked.”
Adrian looked directly at Vanessa.
His attorney continued.
“The trades were placed through accounts linked to Grayson Capital.”
Vanessa’s father.
Adrian’s future father-in-law.
Adrian closed his eyes for one second.
Then opened them.
“Freeze every access credential Vanessa has.”
Marcus moved immediately.
Vanessa rushed toward him.
“Adrian, wait.”
He stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.”
“We can fix this.”
“Fix what?”
Her composure cracked.
“My father made me do it.”
There it was.
The first confession.
And Adrian knew instantly that the wedding was over.
But he had not yet discovered why Vanessa had worked so hard to get Amara fired.
That secret was buried in an older piece of footage.

A recording made six months earlier.
And when Adrian finally watched it, he realized Amara had accidentally witnessed the beginning of the entire conspiracy.
