Chapter 5 - LILY’S FATHER WAS NEVER GONEClara did not sleep.

At dawn she sat in Adrian’s kitchen holding a photograph of Marcus Crane and wondering how many times she had unknowingly passed members of Lily’s family on Chicago streets.

Thomas Crane.

Lily’s father.

Marcus’s younger brother.

Thomas had told Clara almost nothing about his family.

He claimed they were estranged.

Said his parents were dead.

Said his brother lived overseas.

Clara had believed him.

Then Lily was born, and Thomas’s drinking became worse.

His temper changed.

One night he struck a wall inches from Clara’s head while Lily watched.

Clara left before sunrise.

Thomas disappeared six weeks later.

Or so she thought.

Adrian entered.

“You need sleep.”

“You need a less repetitive opening line.”

He poured coffee.

“I found Thomas.”

Clara’s cup stopped halfway to her mouth.

“Alive?”

“No.”

Her face fell.

“When?”

“Eighteen months ago.”

“How?”

“Overdose in Nevada.”

Clara stared at the table.

“Was he involved?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“But Marcus knew Lily was his niece.”

“Yes.”

“Which means he knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he contact us?”

Adrian sat.

“Maybe Thomas told him not to.”

“Or maybe Marcus didn’t care.”

A small figure appeared in the doorway.

Noah.

Clara smiled.

“Morning.”

Noah came to her without speaking.

Adrian watched, trying not to look disappointed.

He remembered Clara’s warning.

Don’t demand.

So he said nothing.

Noah placed a drawing on the table.

Three people.

A woman.

A boy.

A girl.

Beside them was a black car.

Clara looked closer.

“Who is this?”

Noah pointed to the girl.

Then touched Clara’s necklace.

“Lily,” Clara whispered.

He nodded.

Adrian’s pulse accelerated.

He pointed carefully toward the woman.

“Elena?”

Noah nodded.

Then Noah pointed at the man.

His expression changed.

He pushed the paper away.

Clara turned it back.

The man had something distinctive.

A red line drawn down the side of his neck.

Daniel was called.

When he saw the picture, he went quiet.

“I know someone with that scar.”

“Who?”

“Thomas Crane.”

Clara stared at him.

“How?”

“Thomas worked security for Adrian years before Noah was born.”

Adrian looked stunned.

“He used another surname.”

Daniel nodded.

“Thomas Cole.”

Memory returned.

A quiet man.

Competent.

Unremarkable.

Adrian had barely noticed him.

“He worked for me?”

“For fourteen months.”

Clara stood.

“That means Thomas knew Elena.”

“And Noah.”

“And Lily.”

The puzzle rearranged itself.

Thomas had not disappeared.

He had entered Adrian’s world under another name.

Why?

By afternoon they found another piece.

Thomas had secretly contacted Elena after Lily’s medical complications.

He had discovered Marcus’s company knew about contaminated medicine before issuing a recall.

Thomas wanted proof.

Elena agreed to help.

They began gathering documents.

Then Marcus learned about it.

April nineteenth was supposed to be the night Elena delivered copies to federal investigators.

Instead—

two crashes occurred within twenty minutes.

Elena died.

Lily died.

Thomas survived because he wasn’t in either vehicle.

He vanished.

And Noah stopped speaking.

Adrian stared at the timeline.

“He saw something.”

Clara looked toward Noah.

“He saw enough.”

But what?

Daniel found a storage locker rented under Thomas’s alias.

Adrian and Clara drove there together.

Inside were old computers, boxes of corporate documents, and one plastic container labeled APRIL 19.

Clara’s hands shook opening it.

Inside was a child’s pink sweater.

Lily’s.

She pressed it to her face.

Then discovered something in the pocket.

A tiny voice recorder.

Battery dead.

Daniel brought a charger.

The first recordings were innocent.

Lily singing.

Lily laughing.

Elena asking her about school.

Then came one recorded three days before the crash.

Thomas’s voice.

“If Marcus finds out we copied the trial reports, Elena, he’ll destroy everything.”

Elena responded.

“Then we make sure he can’t.”

“He won’t hesitate because Noah is your son.”

Silence.

Then Elena:

“I know.”

Another voice appeared.

Small.

Lily.

“Noah, don’t touch that.”

A toddler laughed.

Noah.

Clara covered her mouth.

Her daughter’s voice filled the room.

Alive again.

The final recording began with rain.

A car door closing.

Elena’s voice:

“Thomas isn’t coming?”

Then Marcus.

“No.”

Adrian froze.

Marcus had been with Elena that night.

The recording continued.

“You should never have involved yourself.”

“Marcus, people could have died.”

“They did die.”

“What does that mean?”

A pause.

Then Marcus spoke.

“You think Lily was the first child harmed by that batch?”

Clara stopped breathing.

Elena whispered, “Oh my God.”

Marcus continued.

“Do you know what happens if those files reach investigators? Thousands of people lose jobs. Investors lose everything. Adrian’s holdings collapse.”

“Adrian would rather lose money than protect this.”

“That’s why he can never know.”

Footsteps.

Elena sounded frightened.

“Stay away from me.”

The recording shifted.

Lily must have hidden nearby.

Then Marcus said:

“Your husband built an empire by understanding sacrifice. Tonight, you’re going to understand it too.”

The recording ended.

Clara was crying silently.

Adrian looked murderous.

Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“Someone entered the manor.”

Adrian immediately called security.

No response.

Then his own phone lit up.

A photograph arrived.

Noah sat tied to a chair.

Beside him stood Marcus Crane.

The message underneath contained six words:

Bring the recording. Come without police.

Clara whispered, “No.”

Another message appeared.

Or the boy dies like Lily.

Adrian went still.

Then he looked at Clara.

The expression on his face was not that of a crime boss.

May you like

It was the face of a father who had already lost one person he loved and had just been told he might lose another.

“We’re getting my son back.”
