Chapter 9 - Elena’s HusbandElena had been married to Miguel Ruiz for fourteen years.

Nathan stood beside the burning remains of Evelyn’s house while Charles Whitmore’s voice continued through the old recorder.

“Rebecca was nineteen when Marcus Hale first entered her life. I believed I ended their relationship. I was wrong.”

Nathan stared at his wife.

“You told me you met him four years ago.”

Rebecca whispered, “Nathan…”

The tape continued.

Marcus had been twenty-four.

Rebecca nineteen.

Charles discovered Marcus was using Rebecca to access financial information from the family company.

He threatened him.

Marcus disappeared.

Years later Rebecca met Nathan.

She never disclosed her past relationship.

Nathan’s voice became hollow.

“Were you still in contact with him when we married?”

“No.”

“When Andrew was born?”

“No.”

“When Caroline was born?”

“No!”

“Then when?”

Rebecca cried.

“Five years ago.”

Nathan looked away.

Four years of betrayal suddenly became five.

But the emotional affair, perhaps, was twenty-seven years old.

Charles’s recording continued.

“I fear Marcus never forgot the Whitmore family. If he returns, he will use Rebecca’s resentment, insecurity, and old attachment against her. Nathan, do not underestimate him.”

The tape ended.

Rebecca whispered, “My father controlled everything.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“And Marcus offered freedom?”

“Yes.”

“So you gave him my life.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Elena watched Nathan absorb the collapse of his marriage.

Then the immediate problem returned.

Caroline.

They had less than twelve hours.

Donnelly proposed duplicating Evelyn’s hard drive.

Marcus would receive a copy containing enough real data to believe it authentic but embedded with tracking software.

Elena would accompany Nathan under surveillance.

Nathan objected.

Elena overruled him.

“He specifically asked for me.”

“That’s why you’re not going.”

“That’s why I have to.”

“You have a daughter.”

“And so do you.”

Nathan had no answer.

The next morning he stood before cameras.

The world expected a resignation.

Instead he said:

“I will not resign today.”

Television reporters erupted.

Nathan continued.

“I have made mistakes, including an illegal contribution from eighteen years ago that I have publicly acknowledged. But I will not confess to crimes I did not commit merely because criminals have threatened my family.”

Marcus watched from somewhere.

Nathan looked into the camera.

“If you are watching, Senator Hale, understand this: my children are not political currency.”

Donnelly nearly screamed when Nathan finished.

“You just changed the plan.”

“No.”

Nathan turned.

“I changed the leverage.”

Marcus called seventeen minutes later.

Furious.

“You think courage plays well on television?”

Nathan replied, “Where’s my daughter?”

“Your maid ruined you.”

Nathan looked toward Elena.

Marcus continued.

“She recorded the wrong conversation.”

“No,” Elena said loudly enough for the phone to hear.

“She recorded exactly the right one.”

Silence.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“You’re going to regret that.”

Elena answered.

“You’ve been threatening me for three days. Find a new sentence.”

For the first time, Marcus lost composure.

He gave them an address.

An abandoned horse-training facility outside Petersburg.

Midnight.

Nathan and Elena.

Hard drive.

No visible security.

Federal teams moved into position hours early.

But the property was wired with cameras.

Marcus anticipated law enforcement.

Donnelly kept teams nearly two miles away.

Nathan and Elena drove in alone.

Inside the main barn, Caroline sat tied to a chair.

Marcus stood behind her.

A pistol rested against her shoulder.

Peter Walsh stood nearby.

So did Gavin Rourke, who had somehow been released from custody.

Donnelly’s agents were shocked.

“How is Rourke there?”

The answer came quickly.

The man arrested at the warehouse had carried false identification.

He was not Gavin Rourke.

He was another contractor impersonating him.

The real Rourke had remained free.

Nathan entered the barn.

“Let her go.”

Marcus smiled.

He was handsome in the polished, practiced way television loved.

“Governor.”

“Hard drive for my daughter.”

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Watch first.”

Elena removed her real smartwatch.

Marcus smiled.

“Finally.”

He moved toward her.

Nathan held up the hard drive.

“Caroline first.”

“No.”

“You won’t get either.”

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Then Caroline suddenly kicked backward.

Her chair struck Marcus’s knee.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Nathan lunged.

Elena threw herself toward Caroline.

Rourke grabbed her hair.

She elbowed him hard.

Peter Walsh ran toward the exit.

Gunfire exploded outside.

Federal agents had moved.

Marcus tackled Nathan.

The two men crashed against a stall door.

Nathan was not a young man anymore, but fury gave him strength.

He slammed Marcus against the wall.

Marcus struck him with the pistol.

Nathan fell.

Marcus raised the weapon.

Then Rebecca stepped into the barn.

Everyone froze.

She had escaped federal supervision.

Or so Nathan thought.

Rebecca held a handgun.

“Marcus.”

He turned.

His expression softened.

“Rebecca.”

“Let my daughter go.”

Marcus smiled.

“You brought the archive?”

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“Then why are you here?”

Rebecca’s hand trembled.

“To finish what I started.”

Nathan whispered, “Rebecca, don’t.”

Marcus extended his hand.

“Come with me.”

For one terrible second, it looked as though she might.

Rebecca walked toward him.

Then stopped beside Caroline.

She pointed the gun at Marcus.

“You never loved me.”

Marcus smiled.

“You knew what this was.”

“No.”

“I told you exactly what you needed to hear.”

Rebecca’s face broke.

Marcus continued cruelly.

“You were a governor’s wife terrified of becoming old and irrelevant. I made you feel important.”

Rebecca’s finger tightened around the trigger.

Nathan said, “Rebecca.”

She looked at him.

“You’re right,” Nathan said quietly. “He used you.”

Marcus laughed.

Nathan continued.

“But you still chose what you did.”

Rebecca began crying.

“I know.”

She lowered the weapon.

Marcus lunged.

A gunshot cracked.

Caroline screamed.

Marcus stopped.

Blood appeared on his shoulder.

The shooter was not Rebecca.

Elena stood ten feet away holding the pistol Rourke had dropped during the fight.

Her hands shook violently.

“I said leave the girl alone.”

Federal agents flooded the barn.

Marcus was arrested.

Rourke too.

Peter Walsh was captured in the woods.

Nathan embraced Caroline.

Rebecca dropped to her knees.

For a moment, everyone believed the nightmare was ending.

Then Donnelly checked Marcus’s phone.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She looked at Nathan.

“There’s an outgoing scheduled message.”

“To whom?”

“We don’t know.”

“What does it say?”

Donnelly read aloud.

IF I’M TAKEN, RELEASE COLE PACKAGE B.

Nathan frowned.

“What is Package B?”

Marcus laughed from the floor.

“You should ask Elena.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Elena stared at Marcus.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Marcus smiled.

“Oh, Elena.”

May you like

Then he delivered the twist none of them expected.

“Tell the governor who your late husband really worked for.”
