Chapter 5 - The Missing Footage

Detective Aaron Grant had the weary patience of a man who had learned that truth rarely arrived in a clean package.

He met Emily, Ryan, and Marisol in a consultation room near the burn unit. The camera and backup hub sat inside separate evidence bags on the table.

Vanessa did not attend.

She had already hired an attorney.

Detective Grant listened while Ryan described the changing stories, the deleted recording, and Vanessa’s attempt to seize the backup device.

“You understand that taking equipment from a jointly occupied residence may become an issue,” Grant said.

“It’s my house.”

“Ownership is rarely simple during criminal investigations.”

Ryan looked down.

“I wasn’t thinking about property.”

“That may be the first thing working in your favor.”

Emily disliked the remark, but she understood it.

Grant turned to her.

“Your daughter gave a disclosure to the hospital psychologist?”

“Yes.”

“And you did not question her repeatedly afterward?”

“No. I know that can affect testimony.”

“Good.”

Ryan flinched at the word testimony.

Emily noticed.

Until that moment, perhaps he had still imagined the situation could remain private. A terrible family problem solved with apologies, therapy, and divorce papers.

But testimony meant court.

Evidence.

A jury.

Consequences no one could negotiate away.

A digital forensic specialist named Priya Shah arrived an hour later. She was small, focused, and spoke to the equipment as if it were a stubborn patient.

“The cloud account shows deletion logs,” she explained. “That’s good.”

Ryan looked confused.

“Deleting it is good?”

“Deleting data often creates more traces than leaving it alone.”

She connected the hub to an isolated laptop.

A progress bar appeared.

ENCRYPTED STORAGE DETECTED.

“Can you get into it?” Emily asked.

“Probably.”

“How long?”

“Hours if we’re lucky. Days if we’re not.”

Emily glanced toward Lily’s room.

“We don’t have days.”

Priya looked at her gently.

“The evidence does.”

By evening, the court had issued a temporary protective order. Lily would be discharged into Emily’s care when medically ready. Ryan’s visitation was suspended pending review, though he was not identified as the suspected offender.

Vanessa was ordered to have no contact.

The order should have brought relief.

Instead, it brought a message.

Emily’s phone vibrated while she was helping Lily drink soup.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: You are making a terrible mistake.

Emily showed it to Detective Grant.

Another arrived.

Lily needs stability, not a mother filling her head with lies.

Then a third.

Ask Ryan what happened to his first child.

Emily stared at the screen.

Ryan had no other child.

At least none she knew about.

Grant photographed the messages.

“Don’t respond.”

“What does the last one mean?”

“It may mean nothing. Intimidation often uses ambiguity.”

But Emily could not ignore it.

She called Ryan after Lily fell asleep.

“Did Vanessa ever tell you she had been pregnant before?”

Silence.

“Why are you asking?”

“She sent a message telling me to ask what happened to your first child.”

Ryan sounded genuinely confused.

“Lily is my first child.”

“Could she mean a miscarriage?”

“No.”

“An abortion?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily listened to his breathing.

“Ryan, this is not the time to protect yourself.”

“I’m not.”

“Were there ever allegations involving a child before Lily?”

“No.”

He hesitated.

“But Vanessa was engaged before.”

“To whom?”

“A man named Cole Mercer.”

“What happened?”

“She said he became controlling.”

“Did he have children?”

“One daughter. I think.”

Emily’s pulse quickened.

“How old?”

“I don’t know. Maybe six or seven back then.”

“Find him.”

“I don’t have his number.”

“You married a woman without knowing why her previous engagement ended?”

“She told me.”

“No. She gave you a story.”

Ryan was quiet.

“You’re right.”

It was the first time Emily remembered hearing him say those words without adding a defense.

The next morning, Priya requested both of them in the consultation room.

“I recovered metadata from the hub.”

Emily sat forward.

“And the video?”

“Parts of it.”

“What parts?”

“The system stored motion-triggered segments. Several have been overwritten. One was manually deleted. I can reconstruct portions, but the first recovered clip is only twenty-one seconds.”

“Does it show what happened?”

“I haven’t watched it beyond verification.”

Detective Grant entered and closed the door.

“We’ll view it together.”

Priya turned the laptop around.

The image showed Ryan’s kitchen from above the refrigerator. A timestamp glowed in the corner.

6:37:12 P.M.

Lily stood near the counter wearing pink pants and a purple shirt.

Vanessa entered the frame.

There was no sound.

She pointed toward the trash can.

Lily shook her head.

Vanessa stepped closer.

The clip froze.

The screen turned black.

Emily gripped the table.

“That’s it?”

“For now,” Priya said.

“Keep going.”

“I am.”

A second fragment loaded.

6:41:08 P.M.

Lily was on the floor.

Vanessa crouched beside her.

Ryan entered through the garage.

The clip ended.

Ryan covered his face.

“It skips the entire thing.”

Priya nodded.

“The critical interval was deleted.”

“Can you recover it?”

“I found remnants, but the file header is damaged.”

Emily looked at the timeline.

“Why did the first clip stop?”

“Someone disabled recording at 6:37:33.”

“And reactivated it four minutes later?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa had not merely lost control.

She had prepared.

She had turned off the camera before hurting Lily, then turned it back on before Ryan returned.

Detective Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Premeditation.”

Ryan looked sick.

Priya raised one finger.

“There’s more.”

She opened a system log.

“At 6:36, another device connected to the kitchen camera.”

“What device?” Emily asked.

“A tablet.”

Ryan stared at the serial number.

“That’s Vanessa’s tablet.”

“Possibly,” Priya said. “But it wasn’t only controlling the camera. It was recording locally.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

“Why would she record it?”

“Some security applications automatically cache live-view sessions.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning Vanessa may have watched the kitchen camera through her tablet while she was physically in the room—and the tablet may have stored a copy.”

Grant stood.

“We need a warrant.”

Ryan looked toward the evidence bag.

“Her tablet was in the house this morning.”

Grant was already calling the district attorney.

For the first time, they knew the missing footage might not be missing.

It might be sitting ten feet from Vanessa’s bed.

And Vanessa knew it too.
