Chapter 9 - SOFIA'S THIRD BIRTHDAYSofia turned three on a Tuesday.

At seven that morning, Elena made pancakes shaped like hearts.
Damian burned the first batch.
Sofia laughed so hard she fell sideways in her chair.
For twenty minutes, they pretended they were an ordinary family.
Then armored federal vehicles arrived.
At eleven, they entered Vale Medical Group headquarters.
The plan was simple.
Sofia wouldn't appear publicly.
Julian would file Elena and Damian's parental verification documents.
Federal agents would serve warrants.
At noon, the trust transferred automatically.
Robert Vale would hopefully reveal himself trying to stop it.
Nothing about the day remained simple.
At 11:22, a family court judge issued an emergency order.
Temporary custody of Sofia Vale-Caruso transferred to the state.
Elena stared at the document.
“Based on what?”
Julian read.
“Allegations that both biological parents are unsuitable.”
Damian's face hardened.
“My criminal history.”
“And Elena's falsified medical records.”
Agent Hayes swore.
“They found a judge still connected to Lang.”
Two child protection officers entered the building.
“We have an order.”
Elena picked Sofia up.
“No.”
The woman softened.
“Ms. Moretti, please don't make this harder.”
“You're not taking her.”
Damian stepped forward.
Federal agents immediately surrounded him.
Hayes whispered, “Do not give them what they want.”
Damian stopped.
His fists unclenched.
He looked at Sofia.
Then at Elena.
“We follow the law.”
Elena stared at him.
This from Damian Caruso.
“We fight it correctly.”
His voice broke slightly.
“For her.”
Elena kissed Sofia's forehead.
The child began crying.
“Mama!”
“I'll be right here.”
“No!”
“Baby, listen to me.”
Sofia reached toward Damian.
“Daddy!”
Damian's face shattered.
But he didn't move.
The child protection worker carried Sofia toward the elevator.
The doors opened.
A man stood inside.
Silver hair.
Expensive navy suit.
Walking cane.
Elena stopped breathing.
Teresa whispered, “Robert.”
Her father.
Robert Vale smiled.
“Hello, Elena.”
Federal agents drew weapons.
Robert lifted both hands.
“Relax. I'm an old man.”
Hayes stepped forward.
“You're under investigation.”
“Not arrest.”
He smiled.
“Yet.”
Elena stared at him.
“You stole my daughter.”
“No.”
Robert looked toward Sofia.
“I preserved the family legacy.”
“You're insane.”
“I'm practical.”
Damian stepped forward.
“You have ten seconds to stop talking.”
Robert smiled at him.
“Damian Caruso. The criminal who accidentally raised my granddaughter.”
“Your granddaughter wants nothing from you.”
“She is three.”
“And already has better judgment.”
At 11:48, Robert's attorneys entered the boardroom.
Emergency petition.
Temporary guardianship request.
Damian realized the plan.
Robert wasn't hiding.
He intended to win legally.
Using records he'd manufactured for years.
At 11:56, Julian whispered, “We may lose this.”
Elena's chest tightened.
“At noon?”
“The trust won't transfer to Sofia while custody is contested.”
Robert heard.
He smiled.
Then the boardroom screens turned on.
Victoria Caruso appeared.
Her recorded face filled the room.
Damian stared.
This wasn't the video from the storage box.
A different recording.
“Hello, Robert.”
Robert's smile vanished.
Victoria continued.
“If you're watching this, then Elena survived long enough for Sofia to turn three.”
Damian looked at Marco.
“I didn't do this.”
Nobody had.
Victoria's video had been programmed years earlier to distribute automatically on Sofia's birthday.
“To the FBI, Justice Department, New York attorney general, and every parent whose child was taken through Vale's network…”
Robert reached toward the computer.
Hayes stopped him.
Victoria smiled.
“…you now have everything.”
Phones throughout the room began ringing.
News alerts appeared.
Files released publicly.
Evidence.
Names.
Payments.
Recordings.
Robert's entire organization exposed.
He turned pale.
Then noon arrived.
The trust activated.
But instead of transferring control to Robert as emergency guardian, a provision appeared.
Julian read it aloud.
“In the event of any disputed guardianship involving a beneficiary under age eighteen, temporary voting authority transfers to…”
He stopped.
Elena stared.
“Who?”
Julian looked at Teresa.
“The beneficiary's maternal grandmother.”
Teresa Moretti.
Robert stared at her.
Teresa began laughing.
“You always thought nurses were invisible.”
Robert's face twisted.
“You.”
“Yes.”
“You planned this?”
“Victoria did.”
Teresa picked up the proxy authorization.
“And my first act as trustee…”
She signed.
“…is dissolving Vale Medical Group and releasing every sealed adoption record to federal investigators.”
Robert lunged toward her.
Damian caught him.
For one second, the old man and the mafia boss stared at each other.
Damian could have hurt him.
Everyone saw it.
Instead, Damian released him.
Agent Hayes handcuffed Robert.
Elena noticed.
Damian had chosen law over vengeance.
For Sofia.
Police escorted Robert away.
Outside, reporters screamed questions.
The emergency custody order was suspended within forty minutes after evidence proved Elena's medical records had been fabricated.
Sofia ran back into the boardroom.
“Mama!”
Elena dropped to her knees.
Sofia crashed into her arms.
Damian crouched beside them.
Sofia grabbed his jacket.
“Daddy.”
He wrapped both of them in his arms.
For several seconds, Elena let herself believe it was over.
Then Agent Hayes approached.
“Damian.”
He looked up.
Her expression told him everything.
“Federal prosecutors reviewed the Caruso evidence.”
Elena stood.
“No.”
Damian remained calm.
Hayes continued.
“They're prepared to offer cooperation terms.”
“What terms?”
Damian looked at Sofia.
Then Elena.
“Tell me.”
Hayes hesitated.
“You surrender control of every Caruso business linked to illegal activity, testify against your former associates, and accept sentencing on financial conspiracy charges.”
“How long?”
“Possibly five years.”
Elena's heart stopped.
Damian nodded.
“I'll do it.”
“No,” Elena whispered.
He looked at her.
“This is how I end it.”
“You'll miss her childhood.”
“I'll miss part of it.”
He touched Sofia's hair.
“But she won't grow up wondering when somebody comes after her because of me.”
Elena shook her head, crying.
“There has to be another way.”
Damian smiled sadly.
“For men like me, eventually the bill arrives.”
He kissed Sofia's forehead.
“I'd rather pay mine before she understands what I was.”
Damian surrendered the next morning.
But none of them knew Victoria had left behind one final piece of evidence.

A recording capable of changing Damian's sentence—and proving that the worst crime ever attributed to him had actually been committed by the man who had just been arrested.
Robert Vale.
