Chapter 6 - Eleven DollarsClaire packed one bag.

Not because she was abandoning the mansion.

Because she was moving Lucy and the triplets somewhere Vanessa would never expect.

Adrian wanted them taken to one of his secure corporate properties.

Claire refused.

“She knows your properties.”

“They’re guarded.”

“So was this house.”

That silenced him.

Claire took them to her apartment.

The billionaire stared at the building.

“You live here?”

Claire got out of the SUV.

“You say that like it’s contagious.”

The building had peeling paint, unreliable plumbing, and a front door that only locked if lifted half an inch while turning the key.

But Vanessa had never been there.

Nobody connected Claire’s cramped two-bedroom apartment to Blackwood Dynamics.

Marcus placed plainclothes officers nearby.

Adrian insisted on staying.

“You can sleep on the couch.”

He looked at it.

The couch was six feet long.

Adrian was six-foot-three.

“That’s not a couch.”

“It becomes one when you’re broke.”

Lucy giggled.

The triplets explored the apartment as though it were an amusement park.

Oliver discovered a laundry chute.

Noah discovered frozen pizza.

Henry discovered that Claire’s refrigerator contained photographs held up by mismatched magnets rather than a touchscreen inventory system.

“This is your husband?”

He pointed at a picture of Claire standing beside a smiling man in firefighter dress uniform.

Claire’s expression softened.

“Was.”

“What happened?”

“He died.”

Henry looked at her.

“Plane crash?”

“No. Building fire.”

“Did you get sad?”

“Very.”

“For how long?”

Claire crouched.

“I still get sad.”

He frowned.

“But you laugh.”

“Both things can happen at the same time.”

Henry thought about that.

Then he nodded.

Adrian had heard everything from the doorway.

That night the children ate boxed macaroni and cheese.

Adrian looked suspiciously at his bowl.

“What?”

Claire asked.

“I haven’t eaten this since college.”

“Your billions will survive.”

He took a bite.

Oliver watched.

“Well?”

Adrian chewed.

“Needs pepper.”

The boys groaned.

For one evening, fear loosened its grip.

Claire saw another version of the Blackwood family.

Adrian playing cards badly.

Henry arguing with Lucy over rules.

Noah helping wash dishes.

Oliver falling asleep on the floor beside a laundry basket.

Then Claire’s landlord knocked.

He wanted the rent.

Claire stepped into the hall.

“I’ll have it Friday.”

“You said Monday.”

“I started a new job.”

“I’ve heard that before.”

Adrian appeared behind her.

“How much?”

Claire turned.

“No.”

The landlord blinked.

Adrian reached for his wallet.

Claire blocked him.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“This is my problem.”

“You’re protecting my children.”

“And you’re paying me.”

“You haven’t been paid yet.”

“Which makes you technically my second-worst employer.”

The landlord snorted.

Claire promised Friday again and shut the door.

Adrian stared.

“You have eleven dollars.”

She looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“The agency ran a financial background check.”

“You investigated my bank balance?”

“It’s standard.”

“It’s creepy.”

“You have eleven dollars and refused help.”

“I have a paycheck coming.”

“You’re stubborn.”

“You’re rich.”

“That isn’t an insult.”

“It wasn’t a compliment either.”

He smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Rachel Knox was stable enough to talk.

Her story was worse than anyone expected.

Four years earlier, she discovered Vanessa abusing the boys.

She copied videos.

Vanessa learned what she had done.

Ethan Cole kidnapped Rachel after work and threatened her family.

Rachel’s younger sister was living in Florida with two small children.

Vanessa showed Rachel photographs of them.

“If I spoke, they died,” Rachel told police.

She had been moved between properties for years.

Not physically chained most of the time.

Fear had been enough.

Vanessa made her send resignation emails.

She told the agency she moved overseas.

She staged the abandoned car.

Then she kept Rachel hidden because Rachel knew too much.

“Why not kill her?” Adrian asked.

Torres answered.

“Insurance.”

Rachel knew where Eleanor’s copied financial records were.

Vanessa believed only Rachel could lead her to them.

Rachel had lied for years.

Now that Mrs. Pritchard’s box had surfaced, Rachel no longer had leverage.

That was why Vanessa moved her.

Claire listened while standing beside the window.

Something below caught her attention.

A gray sedan.

Parked across the street.

It had been there when they arrived.

Marcus’s officers were in an unmarked SUV farther down.

This car was different.

“Adrian.”

He looked over.

Claire pointed.

The gray sedan’s headlights turned on.

Then off.

Adrian called Marcus.

Within seconds, plainclothes officers approached the vehicle.

It pulled away.

Fast.

Police followed.

Ten minutes later, Marcus called.

The sedan was abandoned.

Inside, officers found a camera with dozens of photographs.

Claire leaving the diner.

Lucy walking to school.

Claire entering Blackwood Manor.

And one photograph taken less than an hour earlier.

Lucy standing in Claire’s apartment window.

Written across the back were four words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE PANCAKE.

Claire stopped breathing.

Adrian took the photograph.

His face hardened.

“She targeted you.”

Claire looked toward the bedroom where Lucy slept beside Oliver.

Fear rushed through her.

This was different from worrying about rent.

Different from grief.

Different from exhaustion.

Someone had photographed her child.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You’re coming back to the secured estate.”

Claire wanted to argue.

She didn’t.

At dawn they returned to Blackwood Manor under police escort.

The mansion looked unchanged.

But Claire no longer saw wealth.

She saw blind spots.

Doors.

Cameras.

Memories.

The boys ran upstairs.

Lucy followed.

Claire remained near the foyer.

Adrian approached her.

“I can arrange a hotel for you and Lucy. Somewhere outside the state.”

“No.”

“Claire—”

“I’m not leaving those boys.”

“This isn’t your fight.”

“It became my fight when she photographed my daughter.”

He stared at her.

Claire’s voice lowered.

“And it became my fight when Henry looked at me over a pancake and waited to see whether I was another adult who wouldn’t notice.”

Adrian said nothing.

Claire looked toward the stairs.

“I noticed.”

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then the mansion alarm began screaming.

Marcus shouted from the security room.

Adrian and Claire ran.

One surveillance camera showed the boys’ hallway.

Empty.

Another showed a side door standing open.

Claire’s heart stopped.

“Lucy?”

No answer.

She ran upstairs.

The children’s rooms were empty.

Four children.

Gone.

On Henry’s pillow lay a white envelope.

Adrian tore it open.

Inside was a single photograph of Eleanor Blackwood.

And beneath it, written in Vanessa’s handwriting:

BRING ME THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENTS.

May you like

COME ALONE.

OR THIS TIME, YOU LOSE ALL FOUR.
