Chapter 14 - Richard’s Final Bargain

The note included a time and location.

Midnight.

Carter International’s original manufacturing plant outside Pittsburgh.

The building had been abandoned for twelve years.

My father and Richard had worked there as young men.

It was where their partnership began.

Richard intended to end everything at the beginning.

“He wants Lily and Noah because of the trust,” Marcus said.

“No. The foundation shares are frozen.”

“He may believe he can force genetic samples or guardianship documents.”

“Richard does not care about legal control anymore.”

“What does he care about?”

“Erasing my father.”

The children represented Nathan Carter’s legacy.

Lily through me.

Noah through blood.

Richard wanted both destroyed or controlled.

We did not bring them.

Police placed Lily and Noah in separate protected locations. Only Marcus, Ortiz, and two vetted marshals knew where.

I went to the plant wearing a recording device and a tracking transmitter.

This time, Marcus did not try to stop me.

“You follow the plan,” he said.

“I will.”

“You do not improvise.”

“I usually improvise.”

“Victoria.”

“I will try not to.”

The factory rose beneath the moon like a steel skeleton.

A light burned in the old administrative office.

I entered alone.

Richard sat behind my father’s former desk.

His hospital gown had been replaced with a dark suit. A bandage covered his side. His silver cane leaned against the chair.

Evelyn’s attorney stood near the window.

So he was the final asset.

Martin Graves had advised the foundation for twenty-five years.

He had access to courts, police, trusts, and private transport.

He had arranged Richard’s escape.

“You came without the children,” Richard said.

“Yes.”

“Then Daniel remains a criminal.”

“Daniel is a criminal.”

Richard studied me.

“You no longer care whether he goes to prison?”

“I care whether the truth is complete. I will not trade children for it.”

“That is Nathan talking.”

“No. My father traded too many people for secrets he thought would protect them.”

Richard smiled.

“Finally, some honesty.”

“Where is the evidence?”

Graves placed a metal case on the desk.

Inside were original recordings of Evelyn ordering my father’s death, financial ledgers, and video showing Voss arranging the cover-up.

It also contained proof that Daniel had refused Richard’s original recruitment efforts.

The evidence would not erase his later crimes, but it would show that he had not participated in murder.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“Control of the foundation.”

“You cannot have it.”

“You can sign the voting rights to Noah.”

“And then control him through guardianship.”

“Rachel is weak.”

“She survived you.”

“Everyone survives until they don’t.”

I looked at Graves.

“How much is Richard paying you?”

He said nothing.

“Or is Evelyn paying you?”

His eyes shifted.

Richard noticed.

Their alliance was already unstable.

“You served my father,” I said. “Did he know you betrayed him?”

Graves’s jaw tightened.

“Nathan was arrogant.”

“So was Richard.”

Richard reached for his cane.

“Careful.”

Graves looked between us.

I continued.

“The files have already exposed most of the network. Richard has no company, no political protection, and no safe country waiting for him. Whatever he promised you no longer exists.”

“He has accounts,” Graves said.

Richard’s expression sharpened.

“Quiet.”

“Accounts Voss controlled,” I said. “And Voss is cooperating.”

That was not true yet.

But Richard did not know.

Graves stepped away from the window.

“You said the accounts were untouched.”

“They are,” Richard said.

“How do you know?”

“Because I arranged them.”

“With Claire’s signatures? Evelyn’s companies? Voss’s passwords?”

Graves began to understand.

Richard had never intended to share.

“You used me to escape,” Graves said.

“I paid you.”

“With money I can’t access.”

Richard reached inside his coat.

Graves drew his gun.

Both men aimed at each other.

I stepped behind a steel pillar.

“You brought her here to divide us,” Richard said.

“No,” I answered. “You did that yourselves.”

Gunfire exploded.

Graves fell first.

Richard’s bullet struck his chest.

Graves’s shot hit Richard’s leg.

I drew my weapon.

“Drop it.”

Richard remained seated, breathing hard.

“You won’t kill me.”

“I’ve heard that before.”

He smiled faintly.

“Where are the children?”

“Safe.”

“No one is safe while the name Carter exists.”

“You spent your entire life wanting the name.”

“I spent my life watching Nathan receive everything.”

“So you destroyed everyone who loved you.”

“He destroyed me first.”

“No. He succeeded, and you decided that was violence.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Richard glanced toward the metal case.

“If I cannot have the foundation, neither will you.”

He pressed a switch beneath the desk.

Explosions sounded through the factory.

Fire raced along the lower level.

The evidence case sat between us.

Richard expected me to grab it.

Instead, I moved toward him.

He looked surprised.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting you out.”

“Why?”

“Because dead men become mysteries. Living men answer questions.”

I pulled him from the chair.

He tried to strike me with the gun.

I disarmed him and dragged him toward the exit as smoke filled the office.

Marcus and firefighters entered from the east stairwell.

They took Richard.

I turned back toward the evidence case.

The ceiling collapsed between us.

Flames swallowed the office.

The original evidence was gone.

Richard laughed while officers carried him outside.

“Now Evelyn walks.”

“No,” I said.

He stopped.

“The recording device transmitted everything you and Graves said.”

His smile disappeared.

“You admitted the accounts, the escape, and the conspiracy.”

“That does not prove Nathan’s murder.”

“No. But Graves wore a camera.”

Richard looked toward the burning office.

The attorney had recorded meetings for insurance.

Police recovered his cloud account using the phone found in his pocket.

Within hours, they had video of Richard describing my father’s murder in detail.

Evelyn’s order.

Voss’s cover-up.

Graves’s legal manipulation.

The entire conspiracy.

Richard was returned to custody under armed guard.

This time, no private ambulance transported him.

As dawn rose over the burning factory, Marcus stood beside me.

“It’s over.”

“Not yet.”

“Richard is caught. Evelyn is charged. Voss is contained. Claire is cooperating.”

“Lily still wakes up screaming.”

He had no answer.

Justice could remove danger.

It could not automatically heal what danger left behind.

My phone rang.

The call came from Lily’s protected location.

Marta was crying.

“Victoria, come quickly.”

“What happened?”

“Lily heard the news report.”

“Is she hurt?”

“No. She packed a bag.”

“Why?”

“She says she is leaving so no one else gets hurt because of her.”

My daughter had learned the worst possible lesson from our betrayals.

She believed she was the problem.
