Chapter 15 - THE LAST SECRET

Adrian woke to darkness.
Pain spread through his chest.
He tried to move.
“Don't.”
Elena's voice.
He opened his eyes.
She was sitting beside him.
The bullet had struck his shoulder.
He was alive.
“Where are we?”
“An old safehouse.”
“Richard?”
“Gone.”
“Daniel?”
“Outside.”
Adrian tried to sit up.
Elena stopped him.
“You were shot.”
“I noticed.”
For the first time, she smiled.
Then the smile disappeared.
“My father lied to me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What did he say?”
“He knew about the ledger.”
Adrian remained silent.
Elena looked away.
“I spent six years thinking he was dead.”
“He was protecting you.”
“Everyone says that.”
Adrian understood.
She looked at him.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know.”
“You knew my father was connected to the ledger.”
“I found out tonight.”
Elena stood.
“I'm tired of secrets.”
Adrian watched her.
“So am I.”
Outside, Daniel was waiting.
Elena walked toward him.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“I was the keeper of the ledger.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your grandfather created it.”
“To expose the organization.”
“Yes.”
“Why did Father have it?”
“Because he took it from me.”
Elena froze.
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to destroy it.”
“Why?”
“Because every person named in that ledger would have been exposed.”
“That is the point.”
“Some were innocent.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not all names were enemies. Some were people who had been forced to cooperate.”
Elena understood.
“The ledger could destroy innocent people.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why everyone wants it.”
Daniel nodded.
“Your father wanted to expose the organization.”
“Then why did you stop him?”
“Because I believed the consequences would be worse.”
Elena stepped back.
“You chose to protect criminals.”
“I chose to protect people who would have died.”
She shook her head.
“Who is the real leader?”
Daniel looked toward Adrian.
Then said:
“Senator William Cross.”
Adrian entered the room.
“Where is he?”
Daniel shook his head.
“You cannot fight him openly.”
“Why?”
“Because half the government is compromised.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
She was holding the old photograph.
A small detail caught her eye.
The fourth person had been cut from the photograph.
She turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
THE KEEPER IS NOT THE ONE WHO HOLDS THE LEDGER.
Elena looked at her father.
“What does this mean?”
Daniel's face changed.
Adrian noticed.
“Daniel?”
Daniel said nothing.
Elena grabbed his arm.
“What does it mean?”
Daniel finally whispered:
“The ledger isn't the weapon.”
“Then what is?”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“You are.”
Silence.
Elena stared.
Daniel continued.
“The ledger can be copied.”
“What?”
“Your family memorized the most important names.”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know any names.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You do.”
“Where?”
“In your dreams.”
Elena froze.
Then memories began returning.
A childhood room.
Her grandfather teaching her numbers.
Names repeated like a game.
She had thought they were meaningless.
But they weren't.
She had been trained to remember the names.
Adrian stared at her.
“You carry the entire organization in your memory.”
Elena's breathing became uneven.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice said:
“Hello, Elena.”
She froze.
The voice continued:
“Your mother is with us.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“And if you want her alive…”
May you like
The voice paused.
“Come to the courthouse tomorrow.”
