Chapter 5 - The Fiancée Who Vanished TooRebecca Shaw had disappeared two weeks after Eleanor.

That surprised Maya more than anything.

For twenty-five years, he'd wanted answers.

Now one was sitting in his hand.

Yet he stared at Eleanor's handwriting as though opening it might destroy whatever remained of his old life.

Maya finally said, "You should read it."

Richard looked at her.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because she wrote my name on it."

Maya waited.

Then he handed it to her.

"But she said to open it if you found me."

Maya understood.

They opened it together.

Inside were four handwritten pages and a small brass key.

Richard recognized the first line before Maya had finished unfolding the paper.

"That's her handwriting."

Maya began reading aloud.

"Richard,

If our daughter has found you, then she survived."

Richard turned away.

Maya's throat tightened, but she continued.

"Eleanor wrote that she'd discovered financial transfers inside Ashford Industries months before her disappearance. Someone had been moving money through shell companies connected to a defense contractor called Northstar Strategic Systems."

Caleb, standing near the window, looked up.

"I know Northstar."

Richard did too.

"They collapsed after a federal investigation in 2004."

Eleanor's letter claimed she'd accidentally seen documents proving Ashford executives had secretly helped Northstar conceal defective military components.

If exposed, the scandal could have destroyed both companies.

Richard frowned.

"I never saw any of this."

"Maybe that was the point," Caleb said.

Maya continued reading.

Eleanor had copied documents.

Then someone discovered what she'd done.

A man called her from a scrambled number.

He described the room she was standing in.

What she was wearing.

He told her where Richard was having lunch.

Then he told her unborn child would never take her first breath if Eleanor spoke.

Richard's face turned gray.

The threat was specific.

Disappear.

Take the evidence.

Never contact Richard.

Never contact law enforcement.

If she obeyed, Richard and the baby would live.

If not, all three would die.

Maya stopped reading.

"You believe her?"

Richard didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Caleb asked, "Why?"

Richard looked toward the window.

"Because Eleanor hated running away."

He smiled sadly.

"She once confronted a man twice her size because he kicked a dog."

Then his expression darkened.

"If she ran, she believed the threat."

Maya continued.

The most important section came near the end.

The man who arranged my escape was named Thomas Vale.

Caleb swore quietly.

Richard turned.

"You know the name?"

Caleb nodded.

"Former private intelligence contractor. Worked for politicians, banks, multinational companies. Died twelve years ago."

Eleanor wrote that Thomas had helped her disappear after realizing the people threatening her were more dangerous than she understood.

He provided the Anna Bennett identity.

He forged Maya's documents.

He moved them to Vermont.

But before Eleanor died, Thomas gave her one final warning:

The conspiracy wasn't centered on Richard.

It was centered on control of Ashford Industries.

Richard lowered the letter.

"Marcus."

Maya studied him.

"You think your brother wanted your company?"

"He still wants it."

Caleb shook his head.

"Wanting power isn't proof he threatened a pregnant woman."

Richard read the next section himself.

Then stopped.

"What?"

Maya asked.

He handed her the page.

There was one sentence underlined twice.

Do not assume Marcus is the man behind this. I made that mistake once.

The room went quiet.

Maya read it again.

"If not Marcus, then who?"

Caleb pointed toward the brass key.

"Maybe that tells us."

They spent two hours identifying it.

It belonged to a private deposit vault in Boston.

The account had been opened under Eleanor's real name three weeks before she vanished.

By late afternoon, Richard, Maya, Caleb, and two security officers were inside the bank.

The vault manager was nervous enough to sweat through his collar.

Richard noticed.

"Problem?"

"No, Mr. Ashford."

"Then stop looking at the door."

The man swallowed.

A moment later, they entered the private vault.

The key opened box 417.

Inside were financial records.

Photographs.

A small black ledger.

And a VHS tape.

Caleb lifted the ledger.

"This could be enough."

"For what?"

"Depending on what's inside? Federal charges."

Maya picked up one photograph.

It showed Richard's father, Charles Ashford, standing with several Northstar executives.

Beside him was Marcus.

And beside Marcus...

Richard's face changed.

Maya looked at the third man.

"Who is that?"

Richard whispered the name.

"Edwin Shaw."

Caleb knew it.

"Your chief financial officer?"

"Former CFO."

"Former?"

Richard's expression became distant.

"He died three months after Eleanor disappeared."

Maya turned the photograph over.

Eleanor had written:

One of these men knew everything.

The next photo showed Edwin Shaw alone.

On his hand was the Ashford family signet ring.

Maya's pulse jumped.

"The ring."

Richard stared.

"I told you Marcus wasn't the only one with access."

Caleb examined the photograph.

"Why would your CFO be wearing your father's ring?"

Richard didn't answer.

Because suddenly he seemed to remember something.

"My father accused Edwin of stealing."

"When?"

"Two weeks before Eleanor disappeared."

"What did he steal?"

Richard's face went pale.

"The ring."

Maya looked toward the locked vault door.

"So Edwin threatened her?"

"Maybe."

Caleb shook his head.

"Dead men don't send notes twenty-five years later."

Exactly.

Someone alive was still protecting the secret.

They took everything.

On the way out, Maya's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She nearly ignored it.

Then answered.

"Hello?"

No one spoke.

"Maya?"

A man's breathing.

Then a distorted voice.

"You should have stayed in Vermont."

Maya stopped walking.

Richard turned.

The caller continued.

"Your mother understood the rules."

"Who are you?"

"Someone giving you the chance she never got."

"What chance?"

"Walk away from Richard Ashford."

Maya's blood went cold.

"Or?"

The caller laughed softly.

"Ask Richard what happened to Edwin Shaw's daughter."

The call ended.

Richard was staring at Maya.

"What did he say?"

She repeated it.

For the first time all day, Richard looked genuinely afraid.

Maya whispered, "Who was Edwin Shaw's daughter?"

Richard's answer changed everything.

"Her name was Rebecca."

May you like

He paused.

"And twenty-five years ago, she was Marcus's fiancée."
