Chapter 10 - The Boardroom ReckoningNathan didn't panic.

One for every birthday.
Maya sat inside a private room at the bank with Richard beside her.
For a moment, Nathan Cole didn't matter.
Neither did Ashford Industries.
Neither did billions of dollars.
Maya simply wanted her mother back.
She opened the first envelope.
A photograph of baby Maya sleeping against Eleanor's chest.
The second contained a tiny drawing.
The fifth had a pressed flower.
The eighth contained a letter about learning courage.
The sixteenth was about first love.
The twenty-first was about choosing kindness without becoming weak.
Richard silently read over her shoulder when she allowed him.
Sometimes he smiled.
Sometimes he cried.
Through those letters, he met the daughter he should have watched grow up.
Then Maya reached envelope twenty-six.
Her last birthday before Eleanor's death.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a note.
For the day the truth becomes more dangerous than silence.
Caleb plugged the drive into an isolated computer.
There were three files.
The first was an audio recording.
Nathan Cole's voice.
Younger, but unmistakable.
You disappear tonight.
Eleanor responded.
Richard will find me.
Nathan laughed.
Richard finds what I allow him to find.
Richard's hands tightened.
The recording continued.
Nathan explained that men were watching Richard.
That Maya would die before birth if Eleanor refused.
That Richard's company would collapse.
Then Eleanor asked the crucial question.
Did Charles order this?
Nathan answered:
Charles doesn't have the stomach anymore.
Silence filled the bank room.
Marcus whispered, "There it is."
Nathan, not Charles, had ordered Eleanor's disappearance.
The second file was worse.
A video.
Recorded secretly in Charles Ashford's office.
Nathan and Charles argued about Northstar.
Charles wanted to confess.
Nathan refused.
Charles said people had died.
Nathan said more would lose everything if the truth surfaced.
Then Charles threatened to go to federal authorities.
The video ended.
Three weeks later, Charles suffered the heart attack that everyone believed killed him naturally.
Richard stared at the frozen screen.
"My father was trying to stop it."
Marcus whispered, "At the end."
Richard nodded.
"Too late."
The third file was recorded by Eleanor herself shortly before she died.
She looked older than Richard remembered.
But Maya recognized every expression.
"Richard," Eleanor began.
Richard leaned toward the screen.
"If you're watching this, then Maya found you."
Maya took his hand.
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"I wish I could see your face when you learn she's yours."
Richard covered his mouth.
"She is stubborn. She hates peas. She reads the ending of mystery novels first and then pretends she didn't."
Maya laughed through tears.
Richard looked at her.
"You do?"
"Sometimes."
The video continued.
"I kept her away from you because Nathan kept proving he could reach us. Every few years, a photograph appeared. Maya at school. Maya at the grocery store. Maya sleeping beside a hospital window when she had pneumonia."
Maya's smile vanished.
"I knew he was watching."
Eleanor took a breath.
"But three years ago, something changed. Gordon Pike contacted me. He had discovered Nathan was still using Ashford security resources."
Richard looked at Caleb.
Eleanor explained that Gordon secretly began helping her gather evidence.
He wanted to confess.
But Nathan discovered enough to make him afraid.
Then Eleanor delivered the final revelation.
"Nathan didn't just protect the Northstar fraud."
She looked directly into the camera.
"He arranged Edwin Shaw's death."
Rebecca gasped.
"And I believe he arranged Charles's death too."
Richard shut his eyes.
Eleanor's final words were quieter.
"Richard, don't destroy yourself seeking revenge."
His eyes opened.
"If Maya is with you, then you've already been given back more than Nathan stole."
Maya squeezed his hand.
"Be her father."
Richard began crying openly.
"Not the man Nathan trained you to become."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke for a long time.
Then Caleb's phone buzzed.
The board meeting had been moved again.
Nathan wasn't waiting until Friday.
The vote would take place in three hours.
"He knows," Caleb said.
Richard wiped his eyes.
"Good."
Marcus frowned.
"Good?"
Richard stood.
"For twenty-five years, he's controlled the timing."
He buttoned his jacket.
"Not today."
They arrived at Ashford Tower ninety minutes later.
Reporters crowded the entrance.
Richard walked through them without speaking.
Maya followed.
Cameras exploded.
Questions flew.
"Miss Bennett, are you claiming to be Richard Ashford's daughter?"
"Mr. Ashford, is the DNA report real?"
"Are you stepping down?"
"Did your employee manipulate you?"
Richard stopped.
Maya looked at him.
He turned toward the cameras.
"My daughter has a name."
The reporters went silent.
Richard placed a hand gently behind Maya's shoulder.
"Her name is Maya Eleanor Bennett."
Maya stared at him.
He had used Eleanor as her middle name.
Richard continued.
"And yes."
He looked directly into the cameras.
"She is my daughter."
The lobby erupted.
Richard walked away before anyone could ask another question.
Inside the boardroom, Nathan was already seated at the head of the table.
He smiled.
"Touching."
Richard took the chair opposite him.
Nathan looked at Maya.
"You brought the maid to a board meeting?"
Richard smiled.
"No."
He placed the DNA report on the table.
"I brought the largest individual beneficiary of the Ashford family trust."
Nathan's smile vanished.
Marcus placed Eleanor's evidence beside it.
"And we brought something else."
Nathan glanced at the flash drive.

For the first time in twenty-five years...
Richard watched fear replace confidence on Nathan Cole's face.
