Chapter 13: The Choice No One Expected

Silence filled the underground chamber.
The Chairman stood calmly beside the fireplace, his hands resting on the polished head of his black cane.
On the oak table between him and Vincent lay a single pistol.
Emma, Lucy, Noah, Ava, and Mia stood together near the wall, surrounded by two dozen armed guards dressed in identical black suits.
Buddy pressed against Noah's leg, growling low.
The Chairman smiled.
"You've built your empire with violence."
He nodded toward the pistol.
"Use it."
Vincent never reached for the weapon.
Instead, he asked quietly,
"Why me?"
The Chairman almost seemed pleased.
"That's the first intelligent question you've asked tonight."
Marco's voice crackled through Vincent's earpiece.
"We're ninety seconds away."
Vincent barely moved.
He couldn't risk looking distracted.
Every rifle in the room remained pointed at the children.
The Chairman walked slowly toward a wall covered with photographs.
Thousands of them.
Children.
Teenagers.
Adults.
Business leaders.
Military officers.
Judges.
Doctors.
Some were smiling beside families.
Others stood at political podiums.
"They all began as frightened children."
The Chairman spoke almost proudly.
"We gave them purpose."
Vincent looked at the wall.
"You stole their lives."
"We rewrote them."
Emma quietly studied the room.
She wasn't looking at the guards.
She was counting doors.
Windows.
Security cameras.
Old habits.
Buddy noticed something first.
The puppy suddenly stopped growling.
His ears lifted.
He stared toward the ceiling.
Ventilation ducts.
Someone was moving above them.
Marco whispered again.
"We're inside the ventilation system."
Vincent finally understood.
Buddy had heard them long before anyone else.
He needed only a few more seconds.
The Chairman continued speaking.
"Richard believed he could destroy us."
"He failed."
"Robert believed the truth mattered."
"He disappeared."
He looked directly into Vincent's eyes.
"And now..."
"You've inherited their burden."
Vincent remained expressionless.
"What exactly do you want?"
The Chairman smiled.
"Nothing."
"I simply wish to see what kind of man you truly are."
He picked up the pistol himself.
Then placed it gently into Vincent's hand.
No one moved.
"If you shoot me..."
"My men kill the children."
"If you refuse..."
"You admit you're weaker than every man who came before you."
Vincent looked down at the gun.
His finger never touched the trigger.
Instead...
He slowly placed the pistol back on the table.
"I choose neither."
The Chairman raised an eyebrow.
"There are only two choices."
Vincent shook his head.
"No."
"There are only two choices..."
"...if I accept your rules."
For the first time that evening...
The Chairman stopped smiling.
Above them...
Marco reached the final ventilation grate.
He counted silently with his fingers.
Three.
Two.
One.
He kicked the metal grate downward.
It crashed into the library floor.
Every guard instinctively looked up.
Exactly as Vincent had hoped.
"NOW!"
Vincent flipped the heavy oak table toward the guards.
The pistol slid across the floor.
Gunfire erupted instantly.
Bullets shattered bookshelves.
Glass exploded.
Children screamed.
Buddy lunged straight toward the nearest gunman, biting his wrist before the man could fire.
Emma grabbed Noah's hand.
"This way!"
She remembered the hidden passage behind the fireplace.
Mia pulled Ava with her.
Lucy stayed close behind.
Marco and his team rappelled from the ceiling.
Flashbang grenades filled the room with blinding light.
The Chairman's guards fired wildly.
Vincent tackled two attackers before they could reach the children.
One swung a knife.
Vincent caught the man's wrist.
Twisted.
The blade clattered across the marble floor.
Another guard rushed forward.
Marco dropped him with a single shot to the shoulder.
"Children first!"
Smoke filled the library.
Daniel's voice echoed through the radios.
"Police are surrounding the tunnels!"
Vincent frowned.
He hadn't called the police.
Neither had Marco.
Someone else had.
The Chairman calmly stepped backward during the chaos.
He wasn't running.
He was retreating toward another hidden door.
Vincent saw him.
"He's escaping!"
The Chairman smiled one last time.
"We always have another generation, Mr. Moretti."
He disappeared behind the bookshelf.
Vincent sprinted after him.
The hidden corridor twisted beneath the old station.
Ancient brick walls.
Narrow passages.
The Chairman moved surprisingly fast for a man in his seventies.
His black cane struck the stone floor rhythmically.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Vincent closed the distance.
"Stop!"
The Chairman turned one final corner.
Then...
Stopped completely.
Vincent entered the chamber behind him.
It was a dead end.
No exit.
Only an old steel elevator.
Its cables had long since rusted away.
The Chairman quietly faced Vincent.
"So..."
"It ends here."
Neither man raised a weapon.
The Chairman looked almost relieved.
"I've spent forty years preparing successors."
"And now?"
"They're all gone."
Vincent realized something.
Richard had been telling the truth.
The evidence.
The flash drive.
The orphanage files.
The rescued children.
The Chairman's organization was collapsing.
The old man laughed softly.
"You know what's ironic?"
"What?"
"I never believed love could defeat fear."
He looked toward the distant sounds of children crying.
"I underestimated those little ones."
Police sirens echoed through the tunnels.
Footsteps approached rapidly.
The Chairman looked at Vincent.
"You still have time."
"For what?"
"Kill me."
"No trial."
"No questions."
"No names."
"Everything dies with me."
Vincent shook his head.
"No."
The Chairman smiled sadly.
"Richard chose correctly."
Without warning...
The Chairman struck the emergency release beside the elevator.
The rusted platform behind him collapsed into darkness.
He stepped backward.
The floor disappeared beneath his feet.
Vincent lunged forward instinctively.
Their hands touched for only a second.
The Chairman looked directly into Vincent's eyes.
"Protect them..."
Then his grip slipped away.
He vanished into the darkness below.
Seconds later...
The sound of twisted steel echoed through the shaft.
Then silence.
Marco arrived moments later.
"Boss!"
He looked into the broken elevator shaft.
"Is he..."
Vincent slowly nodded.
"He's gone."
An hour later...
Police escorted dozens of frightened children from hidden rooms beneath Union Station.
More than sixty survivors.
Medical teams waited outside.
Parents who had searched for years collapsed in tears as children they thought were dead ran into their arms.
Emma hugged Mia.
Ava found Lily alive among the rescued children.
The two sisters refused to let go of each other.
Noah laughed as Buddy jumped excitedly between them, his tail wagging so hard he nearly fell over.
Marco walked beside Vincent.
"You did it."
Vincent looked toward the sunrise beginning to break over Chicago.
"No."
"We all did."
Emma quietly took his hand.
"So..."
"Can we go home now?"
Vincent looked at the children gathered around him.
For the first time in many years...
The word home meant something entirely different.
And although the Chairman was gone...
Vincent knew one final chapter still remained.
May you like
The truth would have to be told.
And every child who had survived deserved a future no one could ever steal again.
