Chapter 9: The Flash Drive

The silver cane lay across Vincent Moretti's desk like a relic from another life.
Inside its hidden compartment rested a black flash drive no larger than a thumb.
Marco examined it carefully.
"It could be booby-trapped."
Vincent nodded.
"So could every answer we've found."
He called in the only person outside his criminal organization he completely trusted with technology—Daniel Brooks, a former FBI cyber analyst who had quietly disappeared from government service years earlier after exposing corruption inside his own department.
Daniel arrived carrying an isolated laptop.
"No internet."
"No network."
"If this drive contains malware," he explained, "it dies inside this machine."
Vincent handed him the drive.
"Let's find out why Richard wanted us to have it."
The screen flickered to life.
One folder appeared.
READ ME FIRST
Daniel clicked it.
Instead of documents, a video automatically began playing.
Richard Calloway sat alone in a dimly lit office.
The same grandfather clock ticked quietly behind him.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, Vincent Moretti..."
"...then you've already decided to fight."
His expression remained calm.
"I've studied you for twelve years."
"You are ruthless."
"You are feared."
"But above all..."
"...you keep your word."
Vincent said nothing.
Richard continued.
"You believe I'm responsible for everything you've discovered."
He smiled sadly.
"I wish it were that simple."
The video suddenly switched.
Old newspaper headlines flashed across the screen.
1988 — SAINT GABRIEL ORPHANAGE FIRE
THIRTY-TWO CHILDREN PRESUMED DEAD
Another headline followed.
CASE CLOSED
Then another.
DIRECTOR CLEARED OF WRONGDOING
Richard's voice returned.
"The children never died in the fire."
"They disappeared."
Daniel paused the video.
"He's admitting it."
Vincent shook his head.
"No."
"He's admitting something else."
Richard wasn't confessing.
He was teaching.
The recording resumed.
"When my twin brother Robert tried to expose the orphanage director..."
"...they called him insane."
"They drugged him."
"They erased him."
A photograph appeared.
A young Robert Holloway sat strapped to a hospital bed.
Bruises covered his face.
Vincent clenched his jaw.
Richard continued.
"The people who bought children were never criminals."
Another photograph.
Judges.
Business executives.
Politicians.
Wealthy donors.
Hospital administrators.
"The monsters wore suits."
Marco stared silently.
The room suddenly felt colder.
Daniel opened another folder.
Thousands of scanned documents filled the screen.
Adoption records.
Bank transfers.
Court orders.
Every file linked powerful people to missing children.
Vincent whispered,
"This reaches far beyond Chicago."
"It always did."
One particular name caught Marco's attention.
Judge Samuel Whitaker.
Retired.
Highly respected.
Recipient of numerous civic awards.
Daniel opened the attached file.
Photographs.
Financial statements.
Secret payments stretching back eighteen years.
Judge Whitaker had signed dozens of emergency custody orders.
Many of those children had vanished within weeks.
Vincent leaned back slowly.
"So Richard wasn't building a trafficking network."
Marco looked confused.
"What?"
"He inherited one."
"And spent years documenting everyone involved."
Daniel nodded.
"He's collecting evidence."
"But why continue it?"
Nobody answered.
The final video file began automatically.
Richard appeared older.
More tired.
"If you've reached this point..."
"...you probably hate me."
He looked away from the camera for several seconds.
"I deserve that."
"But understand something."
"I could never destroy the organization alone."
"So I became part of it."
Marco muttered,
"My God..."
Richard heard nothing, of course.
He continued.
"They trusted me."
"They promoted me."
"They made me wealthy."
"And while they celebrated..."
"...I documented every transaction."
Vincent frowned.
"If that's true..."
"He allowed children to suffer."
Richard answered as if hearing him.
"Every day I delayed..."
"...another child disappeared."
"I know."
"I carry every one of them."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"But if I exposed them too early..."
"The network would survive."
"So I waited."
"I built a case too large to bury."
Silence filled the study after the video ended.
Nobody moved.
Marco finally whispered,
"What if he's telling the truth?"
Vincent stared through the mansion window.
"I don't know."
Before anyone could speak again, alarms suddenly erupted throughout Bellarosa Manor.
Red emergency lights flashed.
One of the guards shouted over the radio.
"Vehicles approaching!"
"Multiple SUVs!"
Vincent reached the security monitors.
Eight black vehicles raced toward the estate entrance.
Not police.
Not Richard's usual men.
These carried no license plates.
The lead SUV crashed directly through the front gate.
"They're inside!"
Gunfire exploded across the front lawn.
Vincent grabbed his pistol.
"Protect the children."
Marco divided the guards instantly.
Two teams rushed upstairs.
Another secured the medical wing.
Vincent headed toward the entrance hall.
Bullets shattered stained-glass windows.
Marble columns splintered.
Smoke grenades rolled across the floor.
Masked gunmen flooded the mansion.
Unlike Richard's guards...
These men fired to kill.
Buddy barked furiously upstairs.
Emma immediately gathered Noah, Lucy, Ava, and the three rescued children.
"This way."
Maria unlocked a hidden passage behind the library fireplace.
Vincent had shown it to Emma only the day before.
"Go!"
The children disappeared into the tunnel just as gunfire echoed outside the library.
Buddy refused to leave.
He stood in the doorway, growling.
Emma grabbed his collar.
"Come on!"
The puppy pulled free.
Running toward the sound of fighting.
Downstairs...
Vincent dropped one attacker with a single shot.
Marco disarmed another.
The mansion had become a battlefield.
One masked gunman suddenly shouted,
"Find the flash drive!"
Vincent froze.
They weren't here for the children.
They wanted Richard's evidence.
Daniel rushed from the study carrying the laptop.
"We have to move!"
Vincent nodded.
"The drive?"
Daniel held it tightly.
"Right here."
A sniper's bullet shattered the study window.
Daniel barely ducked in time.
Glass covered the floor.
Outside...
The attackers began retreating.
Too quickly.
Marco frowned.
"They're falling back."
Vincent looked through the shattered doorway.
"No..."
"They already got what they came for."
One guard sprinted toward them.
"Boss!"
"What?"
"The archive room!"
Vincent raced downstairs.
The hidden vault beneath the mansion stood open.
Empty.
The flash drive remained safe.
But every document recovered from Saint Gabriel Orphanage...
Was gone.
Thousands of files.
Stolen.
Only one item remained on the floor.
A small white envelope.
Vincent opened it carefully.
Inside lay a single playing card.
The Joker.
On the back someone had handwritten:
Richard was never the king.
He was only the accountant.
Vincent slowly looked toward Marco.
"If Richard wasn't running the network..."
Marco finished the thought.
"...then someone above him still is."
At that exact moment, Daniel stared at the laptop in horror.
"What?"
Daniel turned the screen toward Vincent.
Hidden inside the flash drive, a final encrypted file had just unlocked itself automatically.
It contained only one line of text.
THE CHAIRMAN KNOWS YOU HAVE THE DRIVE.
And beneath that message...
A live security camera feed suddenly appeared.
May you like
Someone was watching Bellarosa Manor.
From inside the mansion itself.
