Chapter 9 - RICHARD’S DAUGHTERGideon Shaw sent proof thirty seconds later.

A video.

A young woman sat tied to a chair inside a greenhouse.

Mid-twenties.

Dark hair.

Richard’s eyes.

Kayla knew before the woman spoke.

“My name is Elena Pierce.”

Her voice trembled.

“I don’t know who these people are.”

Someone behind the camera said, “Tell Kayla what you were told.”

Elena swallowed.

“They said my biological father was Richard Vale.”

Kayla stopped the video.

She could not watch more.

Leo stood beside her.

“Is it possible?”

“Yes.”

“You’re sure?”

Kayla handed him the photograph.

Richard’s face at twenty-eight.

The baby.

There was no reason for a dying man to invent it.

Wilton traced the upload.

“Shaw bounced it through six servers.”

“What greenhouse?”

“Working facial and environmental analysis.”

Kayla looked at Milo.

The old dog had curled beside the cabin door.

He was exhausted.

“You stay.”

Leo almost smiled.

“You know he can’t understand—”

Milo lifted one eyebrow.

Kayla said, “He understands better than most people I know.”

Within an hour, Wilton found Elena’s public history.

Elena Pierce.

Twenty-six.

Elementary-school art teacher.

No criminal record.

No connection to Silver Blade.

Raised by her mother, Amanda Pierce, who died three years earlier.

Amanda had worked as a court reporter.

That mattered.

Richard had met her during an early corruption case.

Kayla looked at photographs of Elena teaching children to paint.

Birthday parties.

School fairs.

A small apartment.

A rescue cat.

A normal life.

Richard had succeeded.

Until now.

Gideon called again.

“You found the photograph.”

“Yes.”

“Richard always was sentimental.”

“What do you want?”

“The archive.”

“You know federal agents have copies.”

“Not the archive from the cabin.”

Kayla looked at the flash drive.

Shaw knew.

“What’s on it?”

“The piece that proves who financed me.”

“Who?”

“You’ll learn when I do.”

“Then you don’t know?”

Shaw laughed.

“Richard encrypted it.”

“What do you need?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Biometric lock.”

Kayla closed her eyes.

Richard had built another layer.

“Where?”

“I’ll send coordinates.”

“You release Elena first.”

“No.”

“If you hurt her—”

“Kayla.”

Shaw’s voice weakened.

For the first time, she heard age.

Illness.

A dying man clinging to control.

“I knew Richard longer than you did. He believed information could save people. He was wrong.”

“He believed people like you could be stopped.”

“And yet here we are.”

A location arrived.

Old botanical research complex outside the city.

Greenhouses.

Kayla said, “I’m coming.”

Leo shook his head.

Shaw said, “Alone.”

“Of course.”

She hung up.

Leo began, “Absolutely not.”

Kayla faced him.

“You followed me to Martin’s house.”

“Yes.”

“And it saved my life.”

“Yes.”

“So follow me again.”

He blinked.

“That’s your plan?”

“No.”

She handed him the flash drive.

“This is fake.”

Leo smiled slowly.

“You copied it?”

“Wilton did.”

The real drive sat inside Milo’s collar.

Again.

Richard would have appreciated that.

At the greenhouse, Shaw’s men searched Kayla thoroughly.

No gun.

No phone.

No jewelry except her wedding ring.

They led her through rows of dead plants.

Elena sat at the far end.

Alive.

A bruise on her cheek.

Gideon Shaw stood beside her.

Kayla expected a monster.

Instead, she found a thin man leaning on a cane.

Cancer had hollowed him.

But his eyes remained sharp.

“You look like him,” Shaw said.

Kayla glanced at Elena.

“So does she.”

Elena stared at Kayla.

“You knew my father?”

“I married him.”

Elena’s face changed.

Shaw smiled.

“Family reunion.”

Kayla wanted to break his neck.

Instead she held out the fake drive.

“Elena first.”

Shaw nodded to a guard.

The ropes around Elena’s wrists were cut.

“Walk,” Kayla said.

Elena stood.

Shaw raised a pistol.

“Not yet.”

Kayla stopped.

“Unlock the drive.”

He led them to a laptop.

The flash drive required facial confirmation.

Kayla looked into the camera.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Then password.

Shaw stared.

“What is it?”

Kayla knew.

Same number.

The screen opened.

Empty folders.

Shaw froze.

Kayla smiled.

“You really thought I’d bring the original?”

He struck her with the pistol.

Kayla fell.

Elena screamed.

Shaw grabbed Kayla’s hair.

“Where is it?”

Kayla tasted blood.

“Somewhere Richard trusted.”

His eyes narrowed.

“The dog.”

Kayla’s heart sank.

Shaw understood.

He shouted, “Get a team to the cabin!”

Elena lunged at him.

Shaw shoved her away.

Kayla moved.

She swept his cane.

Shaw fell.

A guard grabbed Kayla.

Elena seized a metal watering pipe and swung.

It struck the guard’s shoulder.

Kayla broke free.

Gunfire shattered glass.

Not from inside.

Outside.

Leo.

Cal.

Federal agents.

Shaw crawled toward his pistol.

Kayla reached it first.

She aimed at him.

He stared up.

“There she is.”

Kayla’s finger rested on the trigger.

“The real Kayla Vale.”

He smiled through blood.

“Do it.”

Elena stood behind her.

“Please.”

Kayla did not know whether Elena meant shoot or don’t.

Shaw whispered, “Richard would have.”

“No.”

Kayla lowered the gun.

“Richard spent his life collecting evidence because he believed men like you should live long enough to hear a judge pronounce sentence.”

Agents stormed in.

Shaw laughed as they cuffed him.

“You still don’t understand.”

Kayla crouched beside him.

“What?”

“Richard wasn’t killed because of me.”

Her body went cold.

Shaw looked toward the laptop.

“The person who financed Silver Blade ordered Richard’s death.”

“Who?”

Shaw smiled.

“You have the drive.”

Then he was taken away.

Elena stood several feet from Kayla.

Neither knew what to say.

Finally Elena asked, “Did he love my mother?”

Kayla answered carefully.

“I don’t know.”

“Did he love you?”

“Yes.”

That answer hurt them both.

Elena looked down.

“I spent my whole life thinking my father abandoned me.”

Kayla’s throat tightened.

“He thought staying away kept you alive.”

“That doesn’t make it better.”

“No.”

Kayla stepped closer.

“But it means he thought about you.”

She held out the photograph.

Elena took it.

Her fingers trembled.

“That’s me?”

“Yes.”

Elena began to cry.

Kayla did not touch her immediately.

Then Elena stepped forward herself.

Kayla held her.

For the first time in ten years, grief did not feel like something pulling her backward.

It felt like a door opening.

Then Leo called.

“Kayla.”

His voice was urgent.

“Milo.”

She pulled away.

“What?”

May you like

“The team Shaw sent reached the cabin before agents did.”

Kayla stopped breathing.
