Chapter 10 - THE OLD DOG AT THE RIVERKayla drove ninety miles an hour.

Elena sat beside her.

Leo followed.

No one told Elena she could not come.

Some truths made strangers into family very quickly.

Smoke appeared above the trees before they reached the river.

Kayla’s heart stopped.

“No.”

The cabin burned.

Flames climbed through the roof.

Federal vehicles blocked the dirt road.

Two Silver Blade men lay handcuffed near the trees.

Kayla jumped from the car.

“Milo!”

An agent caught her.

“Ma’am, you can’t go in.”

“My dog is inside!”

“The structure is unstable.”

“Milo!”

She fought him.

Leo grabbed her shoulders.

“Kayla!”

“He’s inside!”

Then a bark came from the riverbank.

Kayla froze.

Again.

Weak.

She ran.

Milo lay half-submerged in mud beneath a fallen tree.

One hind leg was trapped.

His fur was scorched.

But he was alive.

Kayla dropped beside him.

“Oh, God.”

Milo licked her wrist.

Elena knelt on the other side.

Together they lifted the branch.

Leo pulled Milo free.

The old dog tried to stand.

His leg collapsed.

Kayla carried him.

He had once weighed nearly eighty pounds.

Now he felt impossibly light.

At the emergency veterinary hospital, surgeons took him immediately.

Kayla sat in the hallway with dried mud on her clothes.

Elena sat beside her.

Neither spoke for nearly twenty minutes.

Then Elena said, “My mother had a dog.”

Kayla looked over.

“Terrier. Meanest little thing alive.”

Kayla smiled faintly.

“Richard loved dogs.”

“My mom said my father did too.”

Silence.

“You knew,” Kayla said.

“What?”

“Something.”

Elena stared at her hands.

“My mother told me my father was alive until I was four. Then she said he died.”

“That matches.”

“She kept one letter.”

Kayla’s breath caught.

“From Richard?”

Elena nodded.

“I found it after she died.”

“What did it say?”

“That he loved me. That he was sorry.”

“Anything else?”

Elena hesitated.

“A name.”

Kayla turned fully toward her.

“What name?”

“My mother had blacked it out.”

“Can you recover it?”

“I tried.”

“Where is the letter?”

“My apartment.”

Hours later, the veterinarian emerged.

“Milo made it through surgery.”

Kayla nearly collapsed.

“He has burns, dehydration, and a fractured hind leg. Given his age, recovery will be difficult.”

“But he’ll recover?”

“We think so.”

Kayla pressed both hands over her face.

Elena touched her shoulder.

The next morning they went to Elena’s apartment with federal protection.

The letter was hidden inside a children’s art book.

Richard’s handwriting.

Elena had preserved it perfectly.

The black marker covering one line had faded slightly with age.

Wilton scanned it using infrared imaging.

Letters appeared.

M-A-L-C-O-L-M.

Then surname.

V-A-L-E.

Kayla stared.

“No.”

Leo frowned.

“Relative?”

Kayla sat down.

“Richard’s older brother.”

Elena looked confused.

“My father had a brother?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Kayla whispered, “United States senator.”

Everything became bigger.

Senator Malcolm Vale had built his public identity around anti-corruption reform.

He had attended Richard’s funeral.

Held Kayla while she cried.

Paid for the memorial foundation.

He had called every Christmas for three years until Kayla withdrew from the family.

Wilton opened the real flash drive.

Richard’s encryption used the letter name as a key.

MALCOLM.

The files opened.

Bank records.

Emails.

Contracts.

Payments.

Malcolm Vale had financed Gideon Shaw’s earliest operations.

Not because he loved crime.

Because Silver Blade cleared neighborhoods for development projects funded by donors who later backed Malcolm’s political campaigns.

Richard discovered it.

He confronted his brother.

Malcolm ordered Pike to stop him.

Kayla felt numb.

There was video.

Richard secretly recorded the confrontation.

Malcolm stood in an office.

“You don’t understand politics.”

Richard answered, “You’re paying criminals to terrorize poor families.”

“I’m rebuilding cities.”

“You’re stealing them.”

“Do you know what happens if this comes out?”

“You go to prison.”

Malcolm stepped closer.

“You’d destroy our family.”

Richard replied, “No. You did.”

The recording ended.

Elena cried quietly.

Kayla did not.

She was beyond tears.

Leo said, “Federal prosecutors need this now.”

“Yes.”

Kayla copied everything.

Before they could transmit it, every television in Elena’s apartment flashed breaking news.

Senator Malcolm Vale stood before reporters.

He looked devastated.

“Last night, I learned my late brother’s widow has become involved with organized criminals responsible for several violent incidents.”

Kayla stared.

Malcolm continued.

“I love Kayla, but grief can change people.”

Leo cursed.

“He’s framing you.”

Malcolm announced he was requesting a federal investigation into Kayla Vale.

Then came the final blow.

He claimed she had fabricated evidence to extort public officials.

The story exploded.

Half the internet that loved the woman who saved Milo now questioned whether she was a criminal mastermind.

Old unsolved disappearances resurfaced.

Kayla’s past came alive.

Elena looked at her.

“Were you?”

“What?”

“A criminal mastermind?”

Kayla almost laughed.

“I was criminal. Mastermind may be generous.”

Elena did not smile.

“Did you kill people?”

Kayla answered.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped back.

It hurt.

But Kayla did not lie.

“I believed they killed Richard.”

“So that makes it okay?”

“No.”

“Then why should anyone trust you?”

Kayla looked at the television.

“They shouldn’t trust me.”

Elena frowned.

“They should trust evidence.”

That afternoon, Kayla made a decision.

She would not hide.

She would not run.

She called the federal prosecutor.

“I want immunity?”

“No.”

The prosecutor sounded surprised.

“Then what?”

“A deal.”

“For what?”

“I testify to everything I did. Every operation. Every crime.”

Leo stared at her.

The prosecutor said, “You understand what that means?”

“Yes.”

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Elena watched.

Kayla continued.

“In exchange, my people who committed no violent crimes receive protection for cooperating, and Elena Pierce’s identity stays sealed unless she chooses otherwise.”

“What about Senator Vale?”

“You get everything Richard collected.”

A long silence.

“Why now?”

May you like

Kayla looked through the hospital window at Milo sleeping with his leg wrapped.

“Because I’m tired of asking everyone else to tell the truth while I hide from mine.”
