Chapter 5 - The Girl Behind the WallVictor poured himself bourbon as though the gym belonged to him.

The differences were subtle to an untrained eye.

To her, they were devastating.

The archived emergency scans from twelve years earlier showed swelling, fractures, and serious spinal trauma—but also preserved nerve pathways.

The scans stored in Luca's permanent medical record showed far greater destruction.

“They belong to someone else,” Priya concluded.

Nathan looked stunned.

“You're certain?”

“The vertebral anatomy doesn't match Luca's.”

Someone had switched them.

Someone had built Luca's entire diagnosis around another patient's damaged spine.

Luca stared at the images.

“Find the patient.”

Nathan did.

Daniel Mercer.

Twenty-nine years old.

Motorcycle accident.

Complete spinal cord transection.

Admitted to the same hospital four hours after Luca.

Died of pneumonia six months later.

“Convenient,” Luca said.

Nathan shook his head.

“His family never knew his scans were copied.”

Luca's gaze hardened.

“I want Sebastian alive.”

Nathan understood the distinction.

Alive meant Luca was imagining other options.

“We need evidence strong enough for prosecution.”

“I'm not interested in prosecution yet.”

“You should be.”

Luca turned.

“My father was murdered. Twelve years were stolen from me. Somebody drugged me in my own bedroom yesterday. Don't tell me what I should be interested in.”

Nathan held his ground.

“Then listen as your security chief. If Victor and Vale realize you know, they'll accelerate.”

“They already have.”

“Which means we stop reacting.”

Luca nodded.

“Then we make them believe nothing has changed.”

That morning, Sebastian received a call from Luca.

“My spasms are worse,” Luca said weakly.

Sebastian sounded relieved.

“I'll adjust your medication.”

“I think you're right. I shouldn't have refused yesterday.”

“Good. I'll send a stronger dose.”

Luca stared at Nathan while Sebastian spoke.

Stronger.

Of course.

“I appreciate you looking after me.”

“Always.”

After hanging up, Luca smiled coldly.

“Now we know what he does when threatened.”

The new medication arrived two hours later.

Priya analyzed it.

The tablets contained nearly double the dose shown on the label.

Nathan photographed everything.

Then they began Luca's secret rehabilitation.

It started with humiliation.

Priya introduced physical therapist Marcus Bell, a former Army rehabilitation specialist who asked only one question after reviewing Luca's scans.

“Do you want comfort or truth?”

“Truth.”

“You're weak as hell.”

Luca stared at him.

Marcus continued.

“Your muscles have been underused for twelve years. Your brain has spent twelve years being told those legs are dead. We aren't waking up a sleeping athlete. We're rebuilding communication through a damaged system.”

“How long?”

“Don't ask me that.”

“I just did.”

“And I'm telling you it doesn't matter.”

Luca hated him immediately.

Which was precisely why Priya hired him.

The first session involved trying to contract a thigh muscle.

Luca failed for forty minutes.

He threw a towel across the room.

Marcus picked it up.

“Done?”

“No.”

“Then why'd you throw my towel?”

“Because throwing you would require standing.”

Marcus laughed.

“Good. Use that anger.”

On the forty-sixth minute, Luca's quadriceps tightened.

Barely.

Marcus's smile vanished.

“There.”

Luca looked down.

“Again.”

He failed.

Then succeeded.

A tiny contraction.

But his.

Not electrical stimulation.

Not reflex.

His command.

His body.

For the next two weeks, Luca lived two lives.

During daylight, he remained the feared disabled billionaire everyone knew.

He attended board meetings from his wheelchair.

He allowed Sebastian to examine him.

He pretended to swallow medications.

At night, behind a hidden wall in the estate's old gymnasium, he worked until his arms shook.

Elena helped.

Mia became his unofficial coach.

“One more,” she would say.

“You said that five times.”

“Because you complain five times.”

“I could fire your mother.”

Mia crossed her arms.

“You won't.”

Luca raised an eyebrow.

“Very confident.”

“She makes your coffee.”

He laughed despite himself.

Elena watched from across the room.

For the first time since she had met Luca, he looked alive.

Not powerful.

Not feared.

Alive.

One evening, after Mia fell asleep on a sofa, Elena approached him.

“Why do you let her stay?”

Luca wiped sweat from his face.

“She saw the truth before anyone else.”

“She also talks too much.”

“That, unfortunately, appears hereditary.”

Elena smiled.

Then became serious.

“I remembered something.”

Luca turned.

“From St. Gabriel?”

“Yes.”

“There was a nurse named Catherine Holt. She argued with Dr. Vale about your medication.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

Nathan found her within a day.

Catherine Holt was living in Vermont under her married name.

They met her at an abandoned Costello-owned lodge.

Catherine was sixty-one now.

When Luca entered in his wheelchair, she began crying.

“I wondered if you'd ever find out.”

Luca stopped.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“That's not an answer.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I saw you move your right foot after surgery.”

Luca's chest tightened.

“Right foot?”

“Yes.”

He had only recovered visible movement on the left so far.

Catherine continued.

“Dr. Vale ordered increased sedation. I objected. He said involuntary movement could cause dangerous spinal instability.”

“Was that true?”

“Not at the level of medication he prescribed.”

“Why didn't you report him?”

“I tried.”

“To whom?”

“Hospital administration.”

“What happened?”

“I was suspended.”

Catherine looked at Nathan.

“Then my husband received photographs of our children walking to school.”

The room went silent.

“You were threatened.”

“Yes.”

“By Sebastian?”

“The envelope had no name.”

“What did it say?”

Catherine quoted from memory.

STOP ASKING WHETHER LUCA COSTELLO CAN WALK.

Luca's face changed.

Nathan asked, “Do you still have it?”

“No. I burned it.”

“Anything else?”

Catherine hesitated.

“There was one physician who fought harder than I did.”

“Name.”

“Dr. Aaron Blake.”

Priya looked startled.

“Aaron Blake? The neurosurgeon?”

“Yes.”

Luca knew the name.

Blake had died eleven years ago.

Supposedly suicide.

Nathan immediately searched old records.

“He left a note,” Nathan said.

Catherine shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He would never have killed himself.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he called me the night before he died.”

Luca's eyes narrowed.

“What did he say?”

Catherine looked directly at him.

“He said, ‘If something happens to me, Sebastian Vale is not protecting Luca Costello. He's controlling him.’”

Silence.

Then Nathan's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression hardened.

“What?”

Nathan turned the phone toward Luca.

A security camera image from the Costello estate.

Victor Costello had arrived unexpectedly.

And beside him stood Sebastian Vale.

They weren't entering through the front entrance.

They were walking toward the private medical wing.

Toward the hidden corridor adjacent to Luca's secret rehabilitation room.

“Get Elena and Mia out,” Luca ordered.

Nathan reached for his weapon.

But Luca stopped him.

“No.”

“They're fifty feet from the gym.”

“If we move now, they'll know.”

Marcus looked at Luca.

“Then what are you going to do?”

Luca gripped the parallel bars.

Sweat ran down his temples.

For two weeks, he had managed only seconds of assisted standing.

Now the people who had stolen twelve years from him were approaching.

Luca looked at Marcus.

“Put me in the chair.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Now.”

Seconds later, Luca sat motionless in his wheelchair.

Elena hid the rehabilitation equipment.

Mia crawled into an equipment cabinet with her mother.

The hidden wall slid shut.

Victor and Sebastian entered the gym.

Luca looked up casually.

“Uncle.”

Victor smiled.

“Surprise.”

Sebastian's eyes scanned the room.

“You're exercising?”

“Upper body.”

“Without telling me?”

Luca shrugged.

“I own the building.”

Victor laughed.

But Sebastian did not.

He walked toward Luca.

Then crouched.

His hand settled on Luca's left knee.

Luca forced every muscle to remain limp.

Sebastian squeezed.

Nothing.

Then he removed a small silver tool from his pocket.

A pin.

And without warning, he drove it sharply into Luca's calf.

Pain exploded through Luca's leg.

He almost jerked.

Almost.

Instead, Luca smiled.

“Finished?”

Sebastian looked into his eyes.

For one terrifying second, neither man moved.

Then Sebastian stood.

“No response.”

Luca smiled colder.

“Of course not.”

Sebastian returned the pin to his pocket.

But when he turned away, Luca saw it.

A flicker of uncertainty.

May you like

Sebastian suspected.

And suspicion made dangerous men desperate.
