Chapter 8 - The Boardroom MiracleCostello Global's boardroom occupied the seventy-third floor of a Manhattan tower.

Too visible.

Nathan assembled a small private team he trusted from his FBI days.

Luca insisted on going.

“You can barely stand,” Nathan argued.

“My mother spent twelve years waiting for me.”

“You'll be a liability.”

Luca looked at him.

Nathan corrected himself.

“A heavily armed liability.”

“Better.”

The lodge sat deep in the Adirondacks.

Victor rarely used it publicly.

But satellite thermal imaging showed three vehicles and several people inside.

Nathan's team approached before dawn.

Elena stayed at the estate with Mia.

Luca waited inside an armored SUV until the building was secured.

They found two guards.

Neither fought once they saw federal-style tactical gear.

On the second floor, behind a keypad door, were seven rooms.

Six empty.

Room Seven was locked.

Luca rolled forward.

“Open it.”

Nathan broke the lock.

The door swung inward.

A woman sat beside the window.

Her white hair fell to her shoulders.

She was painfully thin.

A blanket covered her legs.

For several seconds, Luca could not breathe.

The woman slowly turned.

Her eyes were older.

But he knew them.

“Mom?”

Evelyn stared.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered, “Luca?”

He broke.

The feared billionaire who had survived hostile takeovers, murder attempts, and twelve years of pain began crying before he could reach her.

Evelyn slid from the chair.

Nathan moved to help.

Luca stopped him.

His mother crawled across the carpet and wrapped her arms around her son's shoulders.

“My baby.”

Luca held her.

“I'm sorry.”

“No.”

“I believed you left me.”

“No.”

“I hated you.”

Evelyn pulled back.

“They told me you were dead.”

Luca stared.

“What?”

“Three years ago. Sebastian said your heart failed.”

Her hand touched his face.

“I stopped fighting after that.”

Luca closed his eyes.

Victor and Sebastian hadn't merely imprisoned her.

They had destroyed her hope.

“What did you know?”

Evelyn looked toward Nathan.

“Everything.”

At the lodge, Priya examined her remotely.

Evelyn had been heavily sedated for years but was medically stable.

Once she could speak clearly, she told Luca the truth.

His father, Giovanni Costello, had discovered Victor stealing millions from Costello Global through shell companies.

Giovanni intended to remove Victor from the corporation.

The night before the crash, he told Evelyn.

“He said Victor would be arrested.”

Luca listened without moving.

“Did Victor know?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Sebastian.”

Luca's eyes narrowed.

Sebastian had been Giovanni's personal physician too.

Evelyn continued.

The morning of the crash, Giovanni complained his heart medication tasted strange.

Later that night, the SUV brakes failed.

Giovanni died.

Luca survived.

After surgery, Aaron Blake told Evelyn privately that Luca's spinal injury was severe but incomplete.

“He said recovery could take years, but he believed you might walk.”

Luca's throat tightened.

“What happened?”

“Sebastian told me Blake was wrong.”

“Then?”

“I saw you move your toes.”

Luca stared at her.

“Before you disappeared?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn had confronted Sebastian.

He warned her that Luca's spine was unstable and movement could kill him.

She didn't believe him.

She contacted Blake again.

Blake promised to investigate altered scans.

The next day, Blake died.

Evelyn went to police.

Before she could provide evidence, two men arrived at the estate.

Sebastian sedated her.

When she woke, she was inside St. Catherine's.

“Victor visited once,” she whispered.

Luca's expression became ice.

“What did he say?”

“He said you needed stability. He said if I kept interfering, your rehabilitation would stop entirely.”

“He threatened me.”

“Yes.”

“Why keep me alive at all?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because Victor needed you.”

“For what?”

“Your shares.”

Luca understood.

As long as he lived, Victor could not inherit Luca's ownership—but he could manipulate company decisions through medical incapacity.

Except Luca recovered cognitively faster than expected.

Victor adapted.

Keep him physically dependent.

Keep Sebastian close.

Keep him drugged enough to control his life without making him mentally incompetent.

“Why didn't they kill me later?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father created something they couldn't break.”

“A trust?”

She nodded.

“If you died before forty without a child, controlling ownership of Costello Global would transfer to a public charitable foundation.”

Luca almost laughed.

His fortieth birthday was seven months away.

Victor could never inherit Luca's shares by killing him.

But after forty?

Nathan checked.

The trust terms changed.

After Luca turned forty, his shares followed his standard estate plan.

Victor remained the nearest family beneficiary.

“They've been waiting,” Luca said.

Nathan's face hardened.

“For your birthday.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Sebastian told Victor you were getting weaker.”

Luca looked down at his legs.

Instead, he was getting stronger.

They moved Evelyn to a secure property.

Publicly, she remained missing.

Luca returned to Manhattan as though nothing had happened.

Sebastian visited that afternoon.

“You look tired.”

“Poor sleep.”

“Did you take the new dose?”

“Yes.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Good.”

Luca studied him.

This man had imprisoned his mother.

Buried his recovery.

Possibly helped kill his father.

“Sebastian.”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember my mother?”

Sebastian paused.

“Of course.”

“Do you think she's alive?”

The doctor looked sad.

“I doubt it.”

Luca nodded.

“What a shame.”

Sebastian touched his shoulder.

“She was troubled.”

Luca nearly broke the man's wrist.

Instead, he smiled.

“Was she?”

“Yes.”

“Grief can destroy people.”

“So can lies.”

Sebastian's eyes sharpened.

Luca pretended not to notice.

After Sebastian left, Nathan entered.

“He suspects something.”

“Let him.”

“That's dangerous.”

“Good.”

Luca's rehabilitation continued.

Six weeks after Mia saw the twitch, he took his first step.

Marcus stood behind him.

Parallel bars on both sides.

Priya watched.

Elena held her breath.

Mia stood at the end of the bars.

“Come get your cookie.”

Luca stared at her.

“That's my motivation?”

“Chocolate chip.”

“Manipulative child.”

“Come get it.”

His left foot moved.

His knee nearly collapsed.

He caught himself.

Then the right.

One step.

Two.

On the third, he fell against Marcus.

Mia screamed happily.

“You walked!”

Luca laughed.

Elena started crying.

He took four steps the next day.

Seven the following week.

Every one hurt.

Every one belonged to him.

Then Victor announced a surprise board meeting.

The agenda was simple.

Luca's medical fitness to continue as CEO.

Sebastian had submitted a confidential report declaring Luca's neurological condition was “rapidly deteriorating.”

Victor intended to remove him.

Nathan looked at Luca.

“They're making their move.”

May you like

Luca smiled.

“Then it's time I made mine.”
