Chapter 11 - Where the Dead Were BuriedSnow covered the Colorado mountains.

Daniel entered wearing a dark suit and an electronic monitor beneath his trouser leg.
Every conversation stopped.
Edward Lang stood at the far end.
Sixty years old.
Silver hair.
Calm smile.
For fifteen years, Edward had been Daniel’s mentor, adviser and second-in-command.
He had attended Daniel’s wedding.
He had sat beside him at his father’s memorial.
He had comforted Eleanor when Michael “died.”
Now Daniel knew he had been Richard’s man all along.
“Daniel,” Edward said smoothly. “I wasn’t sure you were permitted to travel.”
“My attorney checked.”
Marcus entered behind him.
Then Vanessa.
Board members began whispering.
Edward’s eyes narrowed.
“Mrs. Mercer.”
“Victoria Vale,” she corrected.
Silence.
Edward recovered quickly.
“The purpose of this meeting is corporate stability.”
Daniel sat.
“Then let’s stabilize.”
Edward presented financial reports allegedly showing unauthorized transactions connected to Daniel.
Millions.
Fake vendors.
Political donations.
Offshore accounts.
Board members looked horrified.
Daniel waited.
When Edward finished, he asked, “Anything else?”
Edward smiled.
“I think that’s sufficient.”
“No.”
Daniel stood.
“You forgot the part where you created them.”
Edward’s smile disappeared.
Marcus activated the screen.
Video.
Richard Vale.
Edward Lang.
Their meeting.
The room went silent.
Edward’s face drained.
Daniel played audio.
Instructions to manipulate corporate accounts.
Instructions to frame Daniel.
Instructions to acquire Eli’s shares.
One board member whispered, “My God.”
Edward stood.
“This recording is fabricated.”
Vanessa spoke.
“I made it.”
Edward looked at her.
“You?”
“My father trusted me more than he should have.”
Daniel continued.
“Copies were delivered this morning to the FBI, SEC, U.S. Attorney General’s Office and three newspapers.”
Marcus smiled.
“Hard to erase all of them.”
Edward reached for his phone.
The boardroom doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
Edward didn’t move.
Daniel expected panic.
Instead, Edward smiled.
“You think Richard will let you win?”
Daniel walked closer.
“Richard already lost.”
Edward laughed.
“You still don’t understand him.”
Agents placed him in handcuffs.
As they led him away, he looked at Eli.
The boy had entered with Thomas and Michael.
Edward stopped.
“You should ask the child who his father was.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What?”
Edward laughed again.
“Rebecca Bennett didn’t choose some random man.”
Thomas stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Edward looked at Eli.
“Your father is alive.”
Eli went pale.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?”
But Edward was taken away.
Eli looked overwhelmed.
Daniel immediately crouched.
“You don’t have to think about that now.”
“But who is he?”
“We’ll find out.”
That afternoon, federal investigators uncovered Rebecca Bennett’s sealed records.
The father’s name had been intentionally removed.
But DNA solved what paper could not.
Michael provided a sample.
Thomas provided one.
Daniel provided one.
Results showed Eli’s paternal line was unrelated to the Mercers.
Investigators searched archived hospital documents.
One nurse’s old handwritten note contained a name.
Father visited mother: Jonathan Vale.
Vanessa stared at the document.
“My brother.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You have a brother?”
“Had.”
“Let me guess. Dead?”
She gave a humorless smile.
“Supposedly.”
Jonathan Vale was Richard’s younger son.
He disappeared twelve years earlier after a violent argument with his father.
Vanessa believed he had been killed.
Now they questioned that too.
A national records search found a Jonathan Vance living in Oregon.
Age thirty-nine.
Occupation: paramedic.
Photograph.
Vanessa began crying immediately.
“That’s him.”
Eli stared.
“My dad?”
“Yes.”
Daniel asked, “Does he know?”
“I don’t know.”
They contacted him through federal agents.
Jonathan flew to Chicago the next day.
Eli waited inside Daniel’s penthouse.
He was shaking.
“You don’t have to meet him,” Daniel said.
“I want to.”
When Jonathan entered, he stopped.
Eli stood.
The resemblance was immediate.
Same dark eyes.
Same slight tilt of the head.
Jonathan covered his mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Eli stared.
“Did you know about me?”
Jonathan began crying.
“No.”
Eli’s face crumpled.
Jonathan knelt.
“I swear to you. I didn’t know.”
He explained.
Rebecca became pregnant while Jonathan was secretly planning to testify against Richard.
Richard discovered their relationship.
Jonathan fled after being attacked.
He spent years in witness protection under a modified surname.
He believed Rebecca had died before giving birth.
“My father told me the baby didn’t survive.”
Eli whispered, “He lied.”
“Yes.”
Jonathan held out his hand but did not touch him.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”
Eli looked at Daniel.
Daniel nodded gently.
The boy stepped forward.
Jonathan hugged him.
For the second time in weeks, Eli discovered someone he had believed lost had been alive all along.
That evening, the family ate together.
No luxury restaurant.
No crystal.
Pizza boxes covered Daniel’s kitchen island.
Eli insisted everyone taste their food before him.
It became a joke.
For the first time, he laughed.
A real laugh.
Daniel watched him and felt something inside heal.
Then the penthouse phone rang.
Security.
“We found something downstairs.”
“What?”
“A package.”
“No return address.”
Daniel’s good mood vanished.
“What’s inside?”
“An old cellphone.”
Federal agents examined it.
One video.
Richard Vale appeared on screen.
He was alive.
Standing somewhere warm.
Water behind him.
“You’ve done well, Daniel.”
Daniel stared.
“But evidence is not victory.”
Richard raised a glass.
“You took my company, my daughter and my allies.”
He smiled.
“So I took something you have not yet realized is missing.”
Daniel turned.
Everyone was present.
Thomas.
Eleanor.
Claire.
Michael.
Jonathan.
Vanessa.
Eli.
Who?
Then Thomas whispered, “The original ledger.”
They opened the safe.
Empty.
Richard continued on video.
“Without the original, defense attorneys will claim your copies are fabricated.”
Marcus swore.
Richard smiled.
“If you want your evidence back, come to where your father’s story was supposed to end.”
The screen went black.
Daniel knew immediately.
Aspen.
The mountain road.
The place where Thomas Mercer was declared dead.
Richard was taking the story back to where it began.
Daniel looked at his family.
May you like
Twenty-two years ago, fear had scattered them.
This time they would face Richard together.
