Chapter 10 - Eight O’ClockAt 7:55 the next morning, Mercer Development’s boardroom was full.

MILLIONAIRE DEVELOPER ARRESTED IN FEDERAL CORRUPTION CASE.
The headlines came fast.
Years of secret payments.
Bribery.
Money laundering.
Shell companies.
Witness tampering.
The government’s evidence appeared devastating.
Signatures bearing Daniel’s name.
Emails from his corporate account.
Bank transfers authorized with his credentials.
Worst of all were documents allegedly connecting Mercer Development to Richard Vale’s criminal network.
Daniel sat behind glass while Marcus spoke through a jail phone.
“This was built over years.”
“By Vanessa?”
“No.”
Daniel felt guilty for asking.
Marcus continued.
“Some documents predate your marriage.”
“Then Richard.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked through the glass.
“Can you get me out?”
“Bail hearing tomorrow.”
“What about Eli?”
“With Michael and Thomas.”
“Good.”
“Vanessa disappeared from the hospital.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
“She removed her monitors and left.”
“Was she taken?”
“We don’t know.”
Daniel slammed his palm against the glass.
Richard was still controlling everything.
Marcus leaned closer.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“Your mother confessed.”
Daniel froze.
“To what?”
“She says she approved payments to Richard after your father disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Blackmail.”
Daniel lowered himself into the chair.
Marcus continued.
“Richard threatened to kill you and Claire if she stopped.”
Daniel remembered the ledger entries under Eleanor’s name.
The money had not been profit.
It had been ransom.
At the bail hearing, prosecutors argued Daniel had the resources to flee.
Marcus argued Daniel voluntarily cooperated with investigators and had just helped locate a long-missing kidnapping victim.
The judge granted conditional release with electronic monitoring.
When Daniel stepped outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.
“Mr. Mercer, did you bribe city officials?”
“Did your father fake his death?”
“Is your wife involved?”
Daniel said nothing.
Then he saw Eli behind the security barrier.
The boy pushed past Michael.
“Daniel!”
Daniel caught him.
Cameras flashed.
“You’re okay?” Eli asked.
“I’m okay.”
“They said you’re bad.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“What do you think?”
Eli looked almost offended.
“You came back for me.”
That answer meant more than any courtroom ruling.
Back at the penthouse, the Mercer family gathered for the first time in decades.
Thomas.
Michael.
Eleanor.
Claire.
Daniel.
And Eli.
Claire stared at Michael as if she still expected him to vanish.
“You missed my wedding.”
Michael smiled.
“I heard it didn’t last.”
She punched his arm.
Then hugged him again.
Eli sat in the middle of them.
For someone who had grown up believing he had no family, he suddenly had too much of it.
But one chair remained empty.
Vanessa’s.
Daniel tried not to look at it.
At midnight, the elevator opened.
Security immediately drew weapons.
Vanessa stepped out.
Her left arm was in a sling.
Daniel stood.
“Where were you?”
“Getting the thing that proves you’re innocent.”
She placed a flash drive on the table.
Marcus plugged it into an isolated laptop.
Files opened.
Video recordings.
Audio.
Bank records.
Richard’s instructions.
Years of communications.
Vanessa had secretly recorded her father for nearly eight years.
Daniel stared.
“You had this the entire time?”
“No. I hid it in a safe deposit box under another identity.”
“Why didn’t you give it to prosecutors?”
“Because one of Richard’s people works inside the U.S. Attorney’s office.”
Marcus looked alarmed.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then how do we use this?”
“We release copies everywhere.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That could destroy your father.”
“Yes.”
“He could spend the rest of his life in prison.”
“I know.”
“Why now?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because he made me choose between being his daughter and being your wife a long time ago.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“You already chose when you lied to me.”
“I know.”
“When you drugged me.”
“I know.”
“When you married me under a false name.”
Her voice broke.
“I know.”
Daniel looked away.
Vanessa continued.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“Then what do you expect?”
“Nothing.”
She slid another document toward him.
Divorce papers.
Already signed.
Daniel stared.
“I came to give you the evidence and leave.”
Eli spoke from the doorway.
“Don’t.”
Everyone turned.
The boy walked into the room.
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“This is between Daniel and me.”
“You saved me.”
“I helped.”
“You got shot.”
“That was a poor tactical decision.”
Eli almost smiled.
Then he became serious.
“My mom used to say people aren’t the worst thing they ever did.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus interrupted.
“We have a bigger problem.”
He enlarged one of the recordings.
Richard sat in a private office talking with a man whose face was partially hidden.
The date was six months earlier.
Richard said, “When Daniel is removed, Victoria gets the company.”
The hidden man answered.
“And the boy?”
“Necessary until transfer.”
Then the camera angle shifted.
The man’s face became visible.
Thomas stood suddenly.
“No.”
Daniel stared.
The man on screen was someone they all knew.
Someone currently overseeing Mercer Development while Daniel faced charges.
Chief Financial Officer—
Edward Lang.
Daniel’s trusted executive of fifteen years.
Marcus whispered, “He has access to every corporate account.”
Daniel grabbed his phone.
Too late.
A message appeared from Mercer Development’s board.
EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING CALLED — 8:00 A.M.
Second message.
PROPOSAL: PERMANENT REMOVAL OF DANIEL MERCER AS CEO.
Third.
INTERIM CONTROL TO EDWARD LANG.
Daniel looked around the room.
Richard’s plan had never depended solely on Vanessa.
She had been a distraction.
May you like
Edward Lang was the real infiltrator.
And in eight hours, Daniel could lose the company his father built.
