Chapter 7 - THE NAME INSIDE THEIR FATHER’S FILESThe federal government moved them again.

Victoria would remember that image forever.
Her seventy-year-old mother standing beneath airfield lights while a black SUV accelerated directly toward her.
“Mom!”
Samuel ran.
Elena screamed.
At the last second, a federal vehicle struck Conrad’s SUV from the side.
Metal exploded.
The SUV spun.
Its front end crashed into a concrete barrier.
Margaret fell backward but remained unharmed.
Agents surrounded the vehicle.
Conrad emerged bleeding from his forehead.
He raised both hands.
Yet even then he smiled.
“You think this changes anything?”
Victoria walked toward him.
“It changes everything.”
Conrad shook his head.
“You still don’t understand your father’s trust.”
Agents handcuffed him.
“You arrest me tonight, half the people protecting you tomorrow disappear.”
Special Agent Maya Reynolds approached Victoria.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because he may not be bluffing.”
Margaret stepped toward her daughters.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she saw Elena.
Her face collapsed.
“Elena?”
Elena began crying.
“Mom.”
Margaret touched her daughter’s face.
Once.
Twice.
Then she slapped her.
Victoria gasped.
Elena closed her eyes.
Margaret immediately pulled her into an embrace.
“You let me bury you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I buried an empty coffin!”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“For seven years?”
Margaret shook uncontrollably.
“Seven birthdays. Seven Christmases.”
Elena sobbed against her shoulder.
“I had Lucas.”
Margaret looked toward the boy.
Her grandson.
Lucas stood uncertainly.
Margaret knelt.
“You’re Elena’s?”
He nodded.
Margaret opened her arms.
Lucas hesitated before stepping into them.
For the first time since Victoria met him, his shoulders relaxed.
The family reunion lasted less than five minutes.
Then Agent Reynolds told them they had to move.
Conrad had corrupted officers, attorneys, executives, and trustees.
His arrest would trigger panic among all of them.
At a federal safe location, Victoria finally learned why her mother had appeared at the warehouse.
Margaret had never been as uninformed as Conrad assumed.
Three years after Elena’s disappearance, she had found unusual withdrawals from the family trust.
She asked Conrad.
He dismissed them as administrative costs.
Margaret began quietly copying documents.
“But why didn’t you tell me?” Victoria asked.
“Because you loved him.”
“I would have believed you.”
Margaret looked at her.
“Would you?”
Victoria could not answer.
There had been times Margaret criticized Conrad.
Victoria always defended him.
The realization hurt.
Margaret opened her purse and removed a notebook.
“I wrote down every transaction I questioned.”
Agent Reynolds studied it.
“This may be enough to expand the investigation.”
Elena sat beside Lucas.
“What happens to Conrad?”
“He’ll be charged initially with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, conspiracy, and potentially attempted murder. Financial charges will follow.”
“Initially?” Victoria asked.
Reynolds nodded.
“We need to build a case that survives his attorneys.”
Victoria looked through the notebook.
One company appeared repeatedly.
Northstar Children’s Initiative.
Her stomach tightened.
“That’s one of my foundation programs.”
Reynolds nodded grimly.
“We know.”
Victoria stared.
Northstar provided housing for displaced children.
Her name appeared on fundraising posters.
Her photograph appeared in annual reports.
“Conrad used my charity?”
“To move money.”
“How much?”
“Potentially tens of millions.”
Victoria felt physically ill.
She looked at Lucas.
A homeless child.
Her own nephew had slept in shelters while money stolen through her charitable foundation funded Conrad’s empire.
“I’ll expose everything.”
Agent Reynolds warned her.
“That may destroy your foundation.”
“Then destroy it.”
Margaret looked at her.
“Victoria.”
“No. If my name helped hide this, people deserve the truth.”
Elena studied her twin.
“You always were Dad’s brave one.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You survived seven years underground.”
“That isn’t bravery. It’s survival.”
Victoria reached for her hand.
“Maybe they’re the same thing sometimes.”
The next morning Conrad was arraigned.
His attorneys attacked instantly.
They claimed Elena suffered from trauma-related delusions.
They claimed Victoria had been manipulated.
They claimed the warehouse incident was a misunderstanding involving private security.
Then Detective Trent disappeared from federal custody during a hospital transfer.
Agent Reynolds delivered the news.
Victoria stood.
“How?”
“Two officers assisting the transfer were compromised.”
“Conrad’s people?”
“We believe so.”
“Where is Trent?”
“Unknown.”
Elena turned pale.
“He knows where we used to stay.”
Lucas overheard.
“Mom?”
Elena forced a smile.
“It’s okay.”
But it wasn’t.
That evening, a federal technician discovered someone had attempted to access the safe house’s security system.
Inside help.
Again.
They relocated.
Conrad remained detained, but his network moved around them like a living organism.
Then Victoria received an email.
No sender.
One video attachment.
She opened it.
Detective Trent sat in a dark room.
He looked terrified.
A gun rested against his temple.
A masked man stood behind him.
Trent spoke quickly.
“Victoria, Conrad lied to all of us. There’s someone above him.”
Agent Reynolds leaned closer.
Trent continued.
“Your father’s archive wasn’t about Conrad’s family. Hale was only one branch.”
The masked man pressed the gun harder.
Trent swallowed.
“The person who ordered Elena’s disappearance was not Richard Hale.”
Victoria froze.
“It was somebody inside the Mercer family.”
Margaret’s face turned white.
Elena whispered, “No.”
Trent stared into the camera.
“And that person is still close to you.”
The video ended.
Ten seconds later, another message arrived.
A photograph.
Victoria, Elena, Margaret, Lucas, Agent Reynolds, and Samuel.
Taken inside the supposedly secure federal apartment.
Someone had photographed them through the window.

Beneath it were five words.
Conrad was never the mastermind.
