Chapter 10 - THE TRIAL THAT EXPOSED EVERYTHINGConrad survived.

He controlled money.

Secrets.

People.

Fear.

That night Victoria decided to use his greatest weakness against him.

His certainty.

She entered the burned hotel alone.

At least, Charles believed she did.

Agent Reynolds had placed a hidden transmitter beneath Victoria’s collar.

Samuel and Elena entered through underground service tunnels shown on old building plans.

The ballroom still carried scars from the fire.

Blackened walls.

Broken chandeliers.

Rain entered through holes in the ceiling.

Lucas sat beside Conrad.

Charles stood near the old stage.

He was seventy-two now.

Silver hair.

Elegant coat.

The same kind smile Victoria remembered from childhood.

“Vicky.”

Her skin crawled.

“Don’t call me that.”

He smiled.

“I changed your diapers.”

“You murdered my father.”

His smile disappeared.

“William became sentimental.”

“You poisoned him.”

“I protected decades of work.”

“You murdered your best friend.”

“He was going to destroy hundreds of lives.”

“He was going to expose criminals.”

Charles shrugged.

“History is written by people who understand leverage.”

Victoria removed the two diamond clips.

Charles’s eyes followed them.

“There they are.”

“You knew Dad hid the key inside?”

“I knew he created one. I never knew where.”

“That must have bothered you.”

“For ten years.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Release Lucas.”

“After I have the key.”

Conrad raised his head.

“Don’t give it to him.”

Charles struck him across the face.

Lucas screamed.

Victoria flinched.

“Stop!”

Conrad spit blood onto the floor.

“You always did hate being ignored, Charles.”

Charles looked at him.

“Do not mistake biology for affection.”

Conrad laughed weakly.

“I figured that out.”

Victoria saw pain beneath his sarcasm.

For perhaps the first time, Conrad understood that the man who secretly shaped his entire life viewed him only as an asset.

Charles extended his hand.

“The clips.”

Victoria held them up.

“Tell me why you kept Elena alive.”

Elena, hidden somewhere beneath the ballroom, was listening.

Charles smiled.

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“Conrad.”

Conrad stared.

Charles continued.

“Your husband was talented but impulsive. I knew eventually he would need pressure.”

“You used his child?”

“I used every available asset.”

Lucas looked at him.

“I’m not an asset.”

The words were quiet.

Everyone turned.

Lucas sat straighter.

“I’m a person.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

Charles seemed irritated.

“Children should remain silent when adults are speaking.”

Conrad suddenly pulled against his chain.

“Don’t talk to him like that.”

Charles laughed.

“Fatherhood arrives conveniently.”

Conrad’s face hardened.

“No. It arrived seven years late because of you.”

Victoria realized something.

Conrad had not been freed from responsibility.

But the truth was changing him.

Not enough to erase what he had done.

Enough to choose differently now.

Charles pulled a gun.

“Give me the clips.”

Victoria placed them on the floor.

“I’ll slide them over when Lucas walks to me.”

Charles considered.

Then released the restraint around Lucas’s wrist.

“Go.”

Lucas stood.

He took three steps.

Then Charles grabbed his hood.

“Not yet.”

Victoria’s pulse pounded.

“That wasn’t the deal.”

“I stopped trusting deals many years ago.”

He pointed the gun at Lucas.

“The clips.”

Victoria slid them across the floor.

Charles picked them up.

His eyes gleamed.

He joined the two halves.

Click.

The encryption key appeared.

He laughed.

Thirty years of secrets.

Finally his.

He stepped toward a laptop.

That was when Victoria smiled.

Charles noticed.

“What?”

“You were right about one thing.”

“Which is?”

“My father knew you very well.”

Charles inserted the device.

The laptop screen illuminated.

Instead of opening the archive, one message appeared.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Charles froze.

“What did you do?”

Victoria’s smile widened.

“The real archive was transmitted to federal investigators forty minutes ago.”

Charles stared.

“The key?”

“It doesn’t unlock the archive anymore.”

“What does it do?”

“Authenticates its release.”

His face transformed.

“No.”

Victoria took one step closer.

“Every file, every account, every recording. All of it.”

Charles smashed the laptop.

Then raised the gun.

“You stupid girl.”

Conrad moved.

He wrapped his chain around Charles’s leg and pulled.

Charles fell.

The gun fired.

Lucas screamed.

Victoria rushed forward.

Charles kicked Conrad in the face.

He raised the weapon again.

Then Elena appeared.

“Charles!”

He turned.

Elena stood on the stage.

Alive.

Unhidden.

Unbroken.

“You should have made sure I drowned.”

Charles aimed at her.

Agents burst through the side doors.

“Drop the weapon!”

Charles grabbed Lucas.

Gun against the boy’s head.

Everything stopped.

Elena’s face drained.

“Please.”

Charles backed toward a broken balcony door.

“Everyone stays back.”

Rain whipped behind him.

Lucas trembled.

Victoria remembered the café.

The taped shoes.

The diamond clip.

The boy who had trusted a stranger because his mother told him to.

She stepped forward.

“Charles.”

“Stay back.”

“You don’t want Lucas.”

“He gives me an exit.”

“No.”

Victoria kept walking.

“He gives you a weakness.”

Charles frowned.

Victoria looked at Lucas.

“Remember what you told me at the café?”

Lucas stared at her.

His fear shifted.

Understanding.

Victoria continued talking.

“You said your mom taught you what to do when somebody grabs you.”

Elena’s eyes widened.

Lucas suddenly dropped his full weight.

Charles lost his grip.

Lucas twisted.

Conrad lunged despite the chain.

He slammed into Charles.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck Conrad.

Victoria screamed.

Agents tackled Charles.

Elena grabbed Lucas.

Conrad collapsed.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Victoria dropped beside him.

“Conrad!”

His eyes fluttered.

“Lucas?”

“He’s safe.”

Conrad looked toward the boy.

Lucas stared back.

For the first time, Conrad smiled at his son without fear.

May you like

“Good.”

Then his eyes closed.
