Chapter 4 - The Cabin With One BedBy three thirty in the morning, Noah had developed a fever.

Daniel Moretti looked almost amused.
That was the part Adrian would remember later.
Not the gun.
Not Noah crying.
Not Victor Crane smiling.
The amusement.
“You look surprised,” Daniel said.
“I’m disappointed.”
Daniel laughed.
“Still arrogant.”
Lily stood between the two groups, unable to breathe.
Victor held Noah with one arm and kept the gun pressed against the child with the other.
Adrian’s men had weapons drawn, but nobody could shoot without risking the baby.
“Give us the drive,” Daniel said. “Nobody has to die.”
Adrian’s gaze flicked toward Noah.
“Put him down first.”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“Don’t use that voice with me.”
The bitterness was immediate.
Adrian studied him.
Then things began fitting together.
The diverted shipments.
The names disappearing from payroll records.
The unexplained losses.
The coded warning he had received that morning.
“You’ve been moving money through Crane.”
Daniel shrugged.
“Among other things.”
“For how long?”
“Does it matter?”
“To me.”
“Three years.”
Something inside Adrian went cold.
Three years.
Daniel had sat at Sunday dinners.
Stood at family graves.
Drunk whiskey in Adrian’s study.
Shared security information.
And for three years, he had been hollowing the organization from inside.
“Why?”
Daniel laughed again.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The question you never ask until someone betrays you.”
Adrian said nothing.
“You inherited everything,” Daniel continued. “The name. The companies. The respect. Your father made sure everyone knew you were the chosen son.”
“My father wasn’t yours.”
“No. Mine spent his entire life standing behind yours.”
“And this is revenge?”
“This is correction.”
Victor shifted Noah.
The baby screamed louder.
Lily moved instinctively.
“Please. He’s scared.”
Victor pointed the gun toward her.
“Stop moving.”
Adrian’s entire body tensed.
Daniel noticed.
Interesting.
“You care about her?” Daniel asked.
“No.”
Lily glanced at Adrian.
The word hurt even though she had no reason to expect anything else.
Daniel smiled.
“Then this should be easy.”
He fired.
The bullet struck the ground beside Lily’s foot.
She screamed.
Adrian moved one step forward.
Every weapon shifted toward him.
“Do that again,” Adrian said softly, “and you won’t leave this building.”
Daniel’s smile faded.
There.
Now he knew.
Adrian did care.
Maybe not in a way even Adrian understood yet.
But enough.
Daniel gestured.
“The drive.”
Adrian removed it from his pocket.
Lily stared.
He had switched drives after Marco copied the data.
She didn’t know that.
Neither did Daniel.
“Slide it.”
Adrian dropped it onto the wet concrete and kicked it forward.
Victor bent to grab it.
Noah twisted violently in his arms.
The gun shifted.
Half an inch.
That was all Marco needed.
He slammed his head backward into Daniel’s face.
Chaos erupted.
Adrian lunged.
Lily dropped to the ground.
Gunshots exploded through the warehouse.
Victor fired wildly as Adrian crashed into him.
Noah slipped.
Lily saw her child falling.
“No!”
She threw herself across the concrete.
Noah landed against her chest.
Pain shot through Lily’s shoulder.
She wrapped both arms around him.
“Mommy’s here.”
The baby screamed.
Lily curled around him.
Adrian struck Victor hard enough to send the older man into a steel support beam.
Victor recovered and raised the gun.
Adrian saw the barrel.
Saw Lily behind him.
He moved without thinking.
The shot cracked.
Adrian jerked.
Blood appeared across his white shirt.
Lily stared.
“Adrian!”
He ignored the wound.
Two of his men tackled Victor.
Marco pinned Daniel against the floor.
The warehouse fell into brutal silence.
Adrian looked down.
Bullet through the shoulder.
Clean exit.
Not fatal.
He turned immediately toward Lily.
“You okay?”
She stared at the blood running down his arm.
“You’ve been shot.”
“Are you okay?”
“Noah.”
She examined the baby frantically.
No blood.
No injuries.
Nothing except terror.
“He’s okay.”
Only then did Adrian allow himself to exhale.
Daniel began laughing from the floor.
“You’re finished, cousin.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“You think tonight was about some accountant’s files?”
Daniel had blood pouring from his nose.
“Those records are nothing.”
Adrian walked toward him.
“What did you do?”
“You’ll find out.”
Marco tightened his grip.
Daniel smiled through bloody teeth.
“By sunrise, every federal agency in New York will have evidence connecting Adrian Moretti to twenty years of crimes he didn’t commit.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“And when they arrest you, I take everything.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Daniel smiled wider.
Right on time.
Adrian looked at Marco.
Police shouldn’t have arrived that quickly.
Unless someone had already called them.
“Move,” Adrian ordered.
Marco dragged Daniel toward the rear exit.
One of the guards restrained Victor.
But Victor suddenly reached inside his jacket.
Lily saw it.
“Adrian!”
A small detonator flashed in Victor’s hand.
Adrian’s eyes widened.
“RUN!”
The blast came from the eastern side of the warehouse.
Fire erupted.
Steel screamed.
Windows shattered.
Lily grabbed Noah.
Adrian reached them just as part of the ceiling collapsed.
He covered Lily and the baby with his body.
Debris rained around them.
Smoke swallowed everything.
“Stay low!”
Lily couldn’t see.
She could hear Noah crying against her.
Adrian’s hand found hers.
“Follow me!”
They crawled beneath smoke.
Behind them came another explosion.
Marco appeared through the haze.
“Daniel’s gone!”
“What?”
“He broke loose.”
“Victor?”
“Dead.”
Adrian cursed.
Sirens grew louder.
He pushed open a rear loading door.
Cold rain hit them.
SUVs waited beyond the fence.
Lily stumbled toward them.
Then she stopped.
Adrian nearly collided with her.
“What?”
She was staring at the baby.
At Noah’s tiny wrist.
There was something attached beneath his sleeve.
A black plastic tracker.
Adrian ripped it off.
Marco looked at it.
“GPS.”
“They wanted us to leave with him,” Adrian said.
Lily went pale.
“Why?”
Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Daniel’s voice.
“You always were predictable.”
“Where are you?”
“Close enough.”
“What do you want?”
“The same thing I’ve always wanted.”
“My company?”
“Your life.”
Adrian looked toward the city skyline.
Daniel continued.
“Check the news.”
Marco opened his phone.
His expression changed.
Every major news outlet had begun publishing the same breaking story.
BILLIONAIRE ADRIAN MORETTI WANTED FOR QUESTIONING IN FEDERAL MONEY-LAUNDERING INVESTIGATION.
Another headline appeared.
MORETTI COMPANIES LINKED TO CHARITY FRAUD NETWORK.
Then another.
ACCOUNTANT FOUND DEAD WEEKS AFTER UNCOVERING MORETTI FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES.
Lily stared.
“They’re blaming you for Ethan.”
Adrian’s jaw clenched.
Daniel had constructed everything perfectly.
The money.
Ethan’s death.
Crane’s businesses.
All roads appeared to lead back to Adrian.
Daniel spoke again.
“By breakfast, you’ll have no company, no allies, no reputation.”
Adrian’s voice remained calm.
“You forgot something.”
“What?”
“I know who did it.”
Daniel laughed.
“Knowing isn’t proving.”
The line disconnected.
Adrian looked at Lily.
She had Noah pressed against her chest.
Her hair was wet.
Her clothes were covered in soot.
Her face exhausted.
And yet she stood.
Still standing.
Still protecting her child.
Adrian suddenly realized she possessed something Daniel had never understood.
A reason larger than herself.
He looked at Noah.
Then at the ruined warehouse.
Then toward Manhattan.
“We need somewhere secure.”
Marco nodded.
“The estate?”
“Compromised.”
“Safe house in Connecticut?”
“Daniel knows them all.”
Lily swallowed.
“I know somewhere.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You?”
“My grandmother had a cabin in Vermont.”
Marco frowned.
“That’s five hours.”
“Daniel won’t know about it.”
Adrian considered.
Then nodded.
“Get in.”
They entered the SUV.
For the first time since the restaurant, Lily sat beside Adrian instead of across from him.
Noah had stopped crying.
He stared at Adrian with wet blue eyes.
Then the baby reached out.
Tiny fingers closed around Adrian’s bloodstained shirt.
Everyone became still.
Adrian looked down.
Noah pulled himself closer.
Lily tried to move him.
“Sorry.”
Adrian stopped her.
“No.”
Noah rested his head against Adrian’s chest.
The most feared man in New York froze completely.
Marco looked away to hide a smile.
Lily watched Adrian’s expression change.
The same way it had changed when he saw the bottle.
Something frightened lived beneath all that control.
Something tender.
Something wounded.
Adrian slowly lifted his uninjured hand and rested it against Noah’s back.
“Hey, little man.”
Noah sighed.
Then fell asleep against him.
Lily’s eyes filled.
Adrian looked out the window.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Look at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like you’ve discovered something.”
Lily almost smiled.
“Maybe I have.”
Adrian’s mouth twitched.
Outside, police sirens raced toward the warehouse.
Behind them, Daniel Moretti was preparing to destroy Adrian’s empire.
Ahead of them waited a cabin nobody knew about.
And somewhere on the copied files was the truth.

But as the SUV disappeared into the rain, Adrian understood that something far more dangerous had happened tonight.
For the first time in years, he had something to lose.
