Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Refused His MoneyThree months later, Lily Carter stood inside Adrian Moretti’s penthouse holding a check for five million dollars.

He imagined rage.
Violence.
Revenge.
He imagined what he would say.
What he would do.
But he had never imagined the man would stand in front of him holding another terrified child.
Noah cried in the guard’s arms.
Vincent held the gun casually.
That casualness told Adrian everything he needed to know.
Sofia had never mattered to him.
Noah didn’t matter.
Nobody mattered.
People were pieces.
Leverage.
Adrian suddenly understood something his father had apparently understood years earlier.
Killing Vincent would be easy.
Not becoming Vincent would be harder.
“Put the baby down.”
Vincent smiled.
“Give me the drive.”
Ethan glanced at Adrian.
Adrian nodded.
Ethan tossed it.
Vincent caught it.
“Now Daniel.”
Daniel looked at Noah.
Then his father.
“You threatened my son.”
“Your son is leverage.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“He’s ten months old.”
“And already useful.”
Something inside Daniel broke.
For years he had betrayed Adrian believing his father was creating a future for him.
A kingdom.
A legacy.
Now he saw the truth.
Vincent would sacrifice Noah as easily as anyone else.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I’ll authorize the transfer.”
“Smart boy.”
“But release him first.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Adrian.
A silent understanding passed between them.
Adrian hated him.
Distrusted him.
Would never forget what he had done.
But for the next ten seconds, they were family again.
Daniel walked to the laptop.
Vincent pointed toward Adrian.
“You too.”
Adrian approached.
Ethan remained near Isabella.
Marco shifted subtly.
Adrian placed his thumb against the scanner.
Daniel did the same.
The screen flashed.
AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.
Vincent smiled.
Then Ethan shouted.
“Now!”
The ballroom went dark.
Ethan had hacked the hotel’s failing electrical system earlier.
Marco fired.
Glass shattered.
Daniel tackled the guard holding Noah.
Adrian lunged toward Vincent.
The gun discharged.
Lily heard it from the corridor.
She had escaped the men sent to capture her with Teresa’s help and was running toward the ballroom.
“Noah!”
Emergency lights flickered.
Daniel lay on the floor.
Blood spread beneath him.
Noah was crying beside him.
Lily ran.
She grabbed the baby.
“Mommy’s here!”
Daniel looked up weakly.
“Is he okay?”
Lily checked Noah.
“Yes.”
Daniel smiled.
“Good.”
Only then did she see the blood.
“You’re shot.”
“Occupational hazard.”
Despite everything, she almost laughed through her tears.
“Don’t die.”
His smile became sad.
“You care?”
“I care that Noah deserves answers someday.”
“I’ll take it.”
Across the ballroom, Adrian slammed Vincent against a table.
Vincent struck him with the gun.
Adrian barely reacted.
Years of grief moved through his fists.
Every birthday Sofia missed.
Every Christmas.
Every imaginary version of who she might have become.
Vincent fell.
Adrian raised the gun.
His finger touched the trigger.
Vincent smiled through blood.
“Do it.”
Adrian froze.
“You’ve wanted this your entire life.”
Yes.
He had.
“You’re just like me.”
That ended it.
Adrian lowered the weapon.
“No.”
Vincent laughed.
“Coward.”
“No.”
Adrian kicked the gun away.
“You wanted me to become you.”
He looked toward Noah.
Toward Lily.
Toward Daniel bleeding but alive.
Toward Ethan helping Isabella.
“I won’t.”
Police sirens sounded outside.
Vincent stared.
“What did you do?”
Ethan smiled.
“Sent every financial file to federal investigators approximately four minutes ago.”
Vincent went pale.
“Impossible.”
“Turns out accountants can be exciting.”
Marco restrained Vincent.
Canadian police stormed the building minutes later.
Everything became noise.
Questions.
Ambulances.
Weapons lowered.
Evidence seized.
Adrian barely heard any of it.
He crossed the ballroom toward Lily.
She was crying.
Noah was safe against her chest.
Adrian stopped.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“The baby?”
“Fine.”
Only then did she see Adrian’s hands.
Blood.
Bruised knuckles.
A cut across his cheek.
“You?”
“I’m fine.”
She laughed through tears.
“You’re always fine.”
He looked at Noah.
The baby reached toward him.
Lily handed him over.
Adrian held Noah against his chest.
His eyes closed.
For one moment he didn’t care who watched.
He kissed the top of the child’s head.
Lily saw everything in that gesture.
The brother he had been.
The father he might someday become.
The man beneath the reputation.
Noah grabbed Adrian’s collar.
Adrian smiled.
“Still ruining my shirts.”
Lily touched his face.
The intimacy of the gesture surprised both of them.
“You came back.”
“I said I would.”
“You could have left.”
“So could you.”
“I had Ethan.”
“I had you.”
Silence.
Adrian realized what he had said.
Lily’s breath caught.
He could have retreated.
Turned it into strategy.
Protection.
Responsibility.
He didn’t.
“I had you,” he repeated.
Her eyes filled.
Then paramedics arrived.
Daniel survived the shooting.
The bullet missed his heart by less than two inches.
As he was loaded into the ambulance, he looked at Lily.
“Can I see him?”
She hesitated.
Then brought Noah closer.
Daniel touched one tiny hand.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily said nothing.
“I know sorry isn’t enough.”
“No.”
“I’ll spend however long it takes proving I mean it.”
“You may spend a long time in prison.”
“I know.”
“Then start there.”
He nodded.
Noah wrapped his fingers around Daniel’s.
Daniel cried.
Lily did too.
Not because she forgave him.
She didn’t.
But because life was complicated enough to allow anger and grief and mercy to occupy the same heart.
Ethan approached.
Lily punched his shoulder.
“Ow.”
“You let me think you were dead!”
“I was kidnapped!”
“You could have tried harder!”
“I literally escaped from a locked room.”
She hugged him so tightly he stopped talking.
Adrian watched.
Marco stepped beside him.
“You’re smiling.”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Stop.”
Marco grinned.
“What happens now?”
Adrian looked toward police vehicles.
“Vincent talks.”
“He won’t.”
“Ethan’s files will.”
“And Daniel?”
“He answers for what he did.”
“Even if he cooperates?”
“Yes.”
Marco nodded.
“And you?”
Adrian looked at Lily.
“I don’t know.”
That answer frightened him.
Because for the first time in years, Adrian had stopped planning his future around survival.
May you like
He wanted something else.
He just wasn’t sure he deserved it.
