Chapter 11 - The Man Above RichardSenator William Crest had spent twenty-eight years building a reputation around national security.

Barely.

The shotgun blast had missed his heart by less than an inch.

He underwent seven hours of surgery.

Richard survived too.

He woke handcuffed to a hospital bed with two federal agents outside his door.

Leonard Price was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, evidence tampering, fraud, and attempted murder.

Within seventy-two hours, federal investigators used Thomas Carter’s archive to arrest eleven people across four states.

Executives.

Consultants.

A former defense contractor.

Two accountants.

A retired police official.

The conspiracy went further than anyone imagined.

Daniel should have felt relief.

Instead, another question kept him awake.

Why had Evelyn written Daniel’s name beside the word “contingency” in Leonard’s ledger?

Detective Brooks found the answer.

She arrived at the Carter estate carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was another burner phone recovered from Leonard’s office.

A message thread contained Richard’s instructions.

If Evelyn cannot be controlled, use Daniel.

Daniel frowned.

“Use me how?”

Brooks scrolled.

The next message answered.

Stage overdose. Public grief narrative already credible. Noah can be discredited if necessary.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Daniel stared.

“They planned to kill me too.”

Brooks nodded.

“After your mother’s supposed death.”

“Why?”

“To simplify control of the inherited shares.”

Noah leaned back in his chair.

“And me?”

Brooks showed another line.

N.C. unstable profile useful. Psychiatric commitment preferable to removal.

Noah laughed without humor.

“They were going to make me look insane.”

Daniel thought of the funeral.

Victor telling everyone Noah had been drinking.

Richard’s people would have used Noah’s desperate behavior as proof.

Noah had smashed a coffin with a hammer.

Under normal circumstances, it looked irrational.

That act had saved all of them.

Daniel turned to his brother.

“You saved Mom.”

Noah looked uncomfortable.

“We already established that.”

“No.”

Daniel stood.

“I spent years treating you like the reckless one.”

“I am reckless.”

“You’re also the only one who questioned them.”

Noah looked away.

Daniel hugged him.

At first Noah stood stiffly.

Then he hugged back.

“Okay,” Noah muttered. “This is getting weird.”

Rachel laughed through tears.

For a few minutes, the house felt like a family home again.

Then Evelyn came downstairs holding an envelope.

“There’s one more thing.”

Everyone turned.

She sat.

“I owe you the truth.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“What truth?”

“About your father.”

Noah groaned.

“Please tell me he didn’t secretly have another family.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“No.”

She placed a letter on the table.

“Thomas knew Richard might kill him.”

“We found his journal.”

“He knew more than he wrote there.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“The night before the crash, your father came home very late.”

Daniel remembered none of this.

“He gave me two envelopes. One for me. One for you.”

“For me?”

“He told me not to give yours to you unless Richard was ever exposed.”

Daniel stared at the old envelope.

His name was written in Thomas Carter’s hand.

He opened it.

The letter began:

Danny, if you’re reading this, then I was right about Richard, and I’m sorry you had to become a man in a world where someone you loved could betray you.

Daniel had to stop.

Rachel squeezed his hand.

He continued.

Thomas wrote about leadership.

Fear.

Family.

Trust.

He warned Daniel not to let betrayal make him suspicious of everyone.

And at the bottom, he wrote:

Do not inherit my anger. Inherit my unfinished work. Meridian was never meant to make us powerful. It was meant to protect people who have no power. Build it better tomorrow.

Daniel cried silently.

Noah read over his shoulder.

Evelyn reached across the table.

“Your father would be proud of both of you.”

Daniel folded the letter carefully.

For the first time, he believed the nightmare might actually be ending.

Then his phone rang.

Federal Agent Marcus Shaw.

Daniel answered.

“Mr. Carter, we have a problem.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

“Richard Vale has disappeared from the hospital.”

The room went silent.

“That’s impossible.”

“He had help.”

“From who?”

“We’re investigating.”

Daniel looked through the window toward the driveway.

Police vehicles were parked outside.

“How long ago?”

“Fourteen minutes.”

Daniel’s pulse accelerated.

A car engine roared beyond the gate.

Then gunfire erupted.

Security officers shouted.

Rachel grabbed Lily.

Noah ran toward the window.

A black SUV smashed through the front gate.

Daniel pulled his family toward the safe room.

The front door exploded inward.

But it wasn’t Richard who entered.

A woman stumbled into the foyer.

Dark hair.

Scar over her eyebrow.

Celeste Rowan.

Blood covered her coat.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Celeste!”

She collapsed into his arms.

“He’s coming.”

“Richard?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel stared.

“Then who?”

Celeste looked at Evelyn.

“I was wrong.”

“About what?”

“Richard wasn’t the top.”

The words barely came out.

“There’s someone above him.”

Evelyn went pale.

Celeste whispered a name.

And everything stopped.

Because the name belonged to a man Daniel had seen at the funeral.

A man who had comforted the family.

A man who had helped carry Evelyn’s coffin.

Senator William Crest.

Chairman of the Senate technology oversight committee.

And one of the most powerful men in Washington.
