Chapter 6 - What Happened to Their FatherThomas Carter had died seventeen years earlier.

He had taught Daniel how to fish.
Paid for Noah’s first car after graduation.
Carried Evelyn’s late husband’s coffin.
Given a tearful speech at the funeral.
He had stood beside Daniel at weddings, birthdays, hospital rooms, Christmas dinners.
Daniel had called him Uncle Richard since he was six.
The idea that Richard had hired Victor felt impossible.
But impossible had become an unreliable word.
By morning, Detective Brooks had confirmed that Richard owned a shell company connected to several payments in Leonard Price’s hotel ledger.
“Why would he do this?” Daniel asked.
Brooks sat across from him in an interview room.
“That’s what we need to establish.”
“Carter Advanced is worth billions.”
“Exactly.”
“Richard already owns thirty-one percent.”
“And your mother owns forty-six.”
Daniel understood immediately.
“If Mom dies…”
“Her shares transfer according to her estate plan.”
“To Noah and me.”
Brooks nodded.
“That still doesn’t give Richard control.”
“No.”
“Then this doesn’t make sense.”
Brooks pushed a document toward him.
It was a draft voting agreement.
Daniel saw his own signature at the bottom.
Except he had never signed it.
“What is this?”
“A proxy agreement giving Richard temporary voting authority over your inherited shares.”
Daniel stared.
“That isn’t my signature.”
“We know.”
“Noah too?”
“Same document.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“So he planned to forge control after Mom’s death.”
“Potentially.”
Daniel looked toward the one-way glass.
“Where is Richard now?”
“His attorney says he’s traveling.”
“Where?”
“Unknown.”
Noah entered without knocking.
“Mom’s gone.”
Daniel stood so quickly his chair hit the wall.
“What?”
“Her hospital room is empty.”
Brooks was already moving.
They ran upstairs.
A nurse stood crying near the empty bed.
“She was here ten minutes ago.”
Security footage showed a male orderly pushing Evelyn through a service corridor.
Hat.
Mask.
Scrubs.
The face was hidden.
The real orderly assigned to the floor had been found unconscious in a supply closet.
Daniel slammed a fist against the wall.
“No!”
Brooks grabbed his shoulder.
“We’ll find her.”
“We already almost buried her once!”
Noah stared at the footage.
“Go back.”
Security rewound it.
The fake orderly passed Camera Twelve.
For half a second, his wrist showed.
A distinctive silver watch.
Noah pointed.
“I know that watch.”
Daniel did too.
Richard Vale wore it constantly.
A rare vintage Omega their father had given him twenty years earlier.
Richard hadn’t merely arranged Evelyn’s disappearance.
He had walked into the hospital and taken her himself.
Brooks issued an emergency alert.
Police searched Richard’s properties.
His downtown apartment.
Country house.
Office.
Private hangar.
Nothing.
Then Daniel remembered a place police didn’t know about.
“Lake Briar.”
Noah looked at him.
“What?”
“Dad and Richard had a hunting cabin.”
“I thought Dad sold it.”
“He transferred it to a holding company.”
“How do you know?”
“Mom took me there after Dad died.”
Forty minutes later, police surrounded the property.
The cabin appeared empty.
But tire tracks led behind the building.
Into the woods.
A hidden steel door was built into the hillside.
Below it was a concrete bunker.
Inside—
No Evelyn.
But there was a medical bed.
Restraints.
IV bags.
A portable cardiac monitor.
And one white silk pillow identical to the fabric inside Evelyn’s coffin.
Daniel stared at it.
“She was here.”
Detective Mills called from the next room.
“Brooks!”
They found a wall covered in documents.
Corporate records.
Photographs.
Maps.
And a countdown written on a whiteboard.
MERIDIAN ACCESS WINDOW
18 HOURS
Noah read it twice.
“What happens in eighteen hours?”
Daniel knew.
“Quarterly security rotation.”
Everyone turned.
He explained.
“Project Meridian’s encryption changes every quarter. There’s a brief maintenance window when executive credentials can be used locally instead of through the full remote verification system.”
Brooks looked at the medical bed.
“They need your mother’s biometric credentials.”
“Fingerprint. Retinal scan. Voice.”
Noah’s face hardened.
“They can force her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not the final authorization.”
“What final authorization?”
“Dad designed it. If the system detects coercion or fails behavioral verification, it requires a secondary family key.”
Noah stared at him.
“Who has that?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I do.”
Silence filled the bunker.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
UNKNOWN CALLER.
Brooks motioned for him to answer on speaker.
Daniel did.
“Hello?”
Richard Vale’s voice came through clearly.
“Danny.”
Daniel’s hands clenched.
“Where is my mother?”
“Safe.”
“You kidnapped her from a hospital.”
“She was never safe there.”
“You put her in a coffin!”
“No. Victor did.”
“On your orders.”
Richard sighed.
“You always did believe the simplest version of everything.”
“Tell me where she is.”
“I need something from you.”
Daniel looked at Brooks.
She nodded for him to continue.
“The Meridian family key,” Richard said.
“No.”
“Then Evelyn suffers.”
Noah lunged toward the phone.
“You touch her—”
Richard laughed softly.
“Noah. Still emotional.”
“Show us Mom.”
A video call request appeared.
Daniel accepted.
Evelyn appeared on screen.
She sat in a chair.
Her wrists were bound.
Her face was pale.
But alive.
“Mom!”
“Daniel, don’t give him anything!”
Someone struck the phone sideways.
The image blurred.
Daniel shouted.
Richard’s face appeared.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Calm.
The same man who had hugged Daniel at Christmas.
“You have six hours.”
“Richard—”
“Bring the key to Carter Advanced Systems headquarters.”
“Police will be waiting.”
“I expect them to.”
“You’re insane.”
Richard smiled.
“No, Daniel.”
Then he leaned closer to the camera.
“I’m the reason your father is dead.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
Noah whispered, “Dad’s accident…”
Daniel remembered the wrecked car.
The rain.
The funeral.
Richard standing beside them.
Holding their mother while she cried.
Twenty-one years of trust shattered in a single sentence.
Brooks reached for Daniel’s phone.
But Daniel wouldn’t let go.
May you like
Because suddenly this was no longer only about saving Evelyn.
It was about discovering how long Richard Vale had been destroying their family.
