Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Always Found the EvidenceDaniel reached the staircase just as Margaret entered the foyer.

That was the first thing Daniel learned at St. Matthew’s Hospital.

The second thing was far more frightening.

“She’s having premature contractions,” Dr. Allison Reed explained. “We’ve managed to slow them, but something caused significant stress.”

Daniel stood beside Claire’s hospital bed.

“Was she stabbed?”

“There’s a small puncture mark near her lower back.”

Margaret inhaled sharply.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Could a sewing needle do that?”

“Possibly. But the puncture itself isn’t the main concern.”

“Then what is?”

Dr. Reed hesitated.

“We found traces of a medication around the wound.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“What kind of medication?”

“A uterine stimulant.”

Claire stared at the doctor.

“I don’t understand.”

“It can trigger contractions.”

Margaret whispered,

“Oh my God.”

Daniel felt cold.

“You’re saying the needle had medication on it?”

“We’re running more tests.”

Claire began crying.

Daniel sat beside her.

“My baby…”

“The fetal heart rate is stable,” Dr. Reed reassured her. “Right now both of you are safe.”

Margaret stepped toward Daniel.

“That boy didn’t just stab her.”

“Mom.”

“He tried to make her lose the baby.”

“Stop.”

“You saw him holding the needle!”

Claire looked away.

Daniel rubbed his temples.

His eight-year-old son.

A medicated needle.

The idea was insane.

Yet over the previous months, Owen’s behavior had undeniably changed.

He had become withdrawn after Daniel married Claire.

He stopped talking about the baby.

He refused to help paint the nursery.

Twice, Daniel caught him standing outside Claire’s bedroom in the middle of the night.

Daniel had assumed it was jealousy.

Now he no longer knew what to believe.

His phone rang.

Rosa.

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“Is Owen okay?”

“He found something.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“A camera.”

Silence.

“Where?”

“Above the dining-room door.”

Daniel straightened.

“What camera?”

“I don’t know. It’s tiny. Hidden.”

“Don’t touch anything else.”

Rosa hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“I think someone just tried to come into the house.”

Daniel’s pulse jumped.

“Are the doors locked?”

“Yes.”

“Call security.”

“I did.”

“I’m coming home.”

Margaret appeared behind him.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked toward Claire’s room.

“There was a hidden camera in the dining room.”

Margaret froze.

“A what?”

“A camera.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Rosa found it.”

Daniel noticed something strange.

His mother wasn’t surprised.

She looked afraid.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

“Maybe Owen put it there.”

Daniel stared at her.

“An eight-year-old installed a hidden security camera?”

“You know children understand technology better than we do.”

Daniel said nothing.

Margaret folded her arms.

“I’m simply saying we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.”

“Funny.”

“What?”

“Five minutes ago you wanted me to believe Owen tried to kill Claire.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s different.”

Daniel walked away.

At home, private security had already searched the property.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Rosa handed Daniel the camera.

“It was right there.”

She pointed above the doorway.

Daniel examined the device.

Professional equipment.

Not a toy.

He inserted the memory card into his laptop.

A folder appeared.

Thirty-seven video files.

Each file was approximately one hour long.

Daniel clicked the newest recording.

The dining room appeared.

Timestamp: 6:02 p.m.

Claire entered at 7:14.

Margaret at 7:19.

Owen wandered through at 7:22.

Daniel fast-forwarded.

At 7:36, Claire was standing beside the table.

Owen entered.

Daniel leaned closer.

This was it.

7:37.

Then—

the video jumped.

7:54.

Daniel stared.

Seventeen minutes were missing.

Exactly seventeen minutes.

The scream had happened at approximately 7:46.

Rosa whispered,

“Someone deleted it.”

Daniel checked earlier files.

Nothing unusual.

Then Owen walked into the room.

His eyes were red.

“Did it show you?”

Daniel looked at his son.

“No.”

Owen’s shoulders dropped.

Daniel hated himself for the disappointment he saw.

“I believe you may not be telling me everything.”

Owen’s face changed.

“I am!”

“Owen, this is serious.”

“I know!”

“You were holding a needle covered in medication.”

“I found it!”

“Where?”

“On Claire’s dress!”

“How?”

“I already told you!”

Daniel’s frustration rose.

“And you expect me to believe someone secretly put it there?”

Owen stared at him.

“Yes.”

Daniel looked away.

That hurt more than Owen expected.

The boy turned and ran upstairs.

Rosa shook her head.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Daniel snapped,

“My wife almost went into premature labor.”

“And your son is terrified.”

“My son was holding the weapon.”

“Your son is eight.”

Daniel pressed both hands against the table.

“I know how old my son is!”

Silence.

Rosa softened.

“Then remember who he is.”

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

Later that night, he went to Owen’s bedroom.

The door was partially open.

Owen was asleep with his childhood teddy bear beside him.

Daniel stepped inside.

Something lay beneath Owen’s desk.

A small black plastic rectangle.

Another memory card.

Daniel picked it up.

His heartbeat quickened.

He inserted it into his phone.

One video file appeared.

The recording was shaky.

Someone had apparently copied footage directly from the hidden camera.

Timestamp: two weeks earlier.

The dining room was empty.

Then Margaret entered.

Daniel leaned closer.

His mother walked to the table.

She removed something from her handbag.

A bottle.

Claire’s prenatal vitamins.

Margaret unscrewed the lid.

She poured the vitamins into her hand.

Then slipped them into Owen’s backpack hanging on a chair.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The video continued.

Margaret looked directly toward the hidden camera.

And smiled.

Not accidentally.

Not curiously.

She knew it was there.

Daniel’s hand began shaking.

Then someone spoke from behind the camera.

A man’s voice.

“We’ll need something bigger next time.”

Margaret replied,

“Leave that to me.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

The voice was familiar.

Terrifyingly familiar.

But before he could identify it, footsteps sounded behind him.

Daniel turned.

Owen stood in the doorway.

Wide awake.

“Dad?”

Daniel lowered the phone.

Owen looked at the memory card.

Then his father’s face.

“You saw Grandma, didn’t you?”

Daniel whispered,

“How did this card get in your room?”

Owen’s eyes filled with fear.

“I didn’t put it there.”

May you like

And downstairs, the front door opened.

Someone had come home.
