Chapter 10 - The Brother Behind the BrotherMarcus was arrested before sunrise.

Claire screamed his name.

For one impossible second, no one moved.

Then blood appeared on Daniel’s shoulder.

Not his chest.

Victor’s bullet had passed through the upper arm.

Daniel rolled behind a steel support column.

The warehouse erupted.

“Police!”

Tactical officers entered from three directions.

Victor fired twice.

Officers returned fire.

He dropped the gun and raised his hands.

Margaret grabbed Owen.

She pressed the syringe against his neck.

“Back!”

Every officer froze.

Daniel forced himself upright.

“Mom.”

“Don’t come closer!”

Blood ran down his arm.

Owen stood rigid in front of Margaret.

His eyes locked onto Daniel.

“Let him go.”

Margaret laughed hysterically.

“You think you won.”

“This isn’t about winning.”

“You took everything!”

“I didn’t take anything.”

“Your father chose you!”

Daniel understood.

For twelve years he had searched for logic in Margaret’s actions.

Money.

Control.

Inheritance.

But beneath everything was something uglier.

Resentment.

She could not tolerate being rejected.

William chose honesty over protecting her.

Emily chose investigation over silence.

Daniel chose Claire.

Claire carried children who would inherit what Margaret believed belonged to her.

Even Owen’s existence represented William’s decision to place the future beyond Margaret’s reach.

Margaret lowered her mouth beside Owen’s ear.

“Your father ruined everything.”

Owen whispered,

“No.”

She looked down.

“What?”

“My dad didn’t.”

“You don’t know anything.”

“You did.”

The words were quiet.

But everyone heard them.

Margaret’s hand shook.

Owen continued.

“You made Uncle Marcus lie.”

“Quiet.”

“You hurt my mom.”

“Stop.”

“You hurt Claire.”

“Stop!”

“And you made Dad think I was bad.”

Margaret pressed the syringe closer.

Daniel took one step.

“Mom, look at me.”

“Don’t move!”

“Look at me.”

She did.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“You want me to say you mattered?”

Margaret stared.

“You want me to say Dad was wrong to leave you?”

Her eyes filled unexpectedly.

“You think you understand me?”

“No.”

Daniel took another tiny step.

“But Owen has nothing to do with what Dad did.”

“He is your weakness.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“He’s my son.”

Owen began crying silently.

“And Claire is my wife.”

Another step.

“And those babies are my children.”

Margaret tightened her grip.

Daniel continued.

“You spent your whole life believing love was something people owed you.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“You ungrateful—”

“But people loved you.”

She stopped.

“Dad loved you before you betrayed him. Marcus loved you before you blackmailed him. I loved you before tonight.”

Her hand trembled.

“Owen loved you even while you were setting him up.”

Owen whispered,

“I did.”

Margaret looked down at him.

That moment was enough.

Owen stomped backward onto her foot.

Emily had taught him that too.

If someone grabs you, create space.

He ducked.

Daniel lunged.

Margaret swung the syringe.

It stabbed Daniel’s jacket.

Officers tackled her.

Owen ran into Daniel’s arms.

“Dad!”

Daniel dropped to his knees despite the wound.

“I’ve got you.”

Claire rushed from the office after an officer cut her restraints.

Owen saw her.

“Claire!”

She fell beside him and wrapped both arms around him.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked confused.

“For what?”

“For ever believing you could hurt me.”

Owen started crying again.

Claire kissed his forehead.

“You saved me.”

Daniel looked at her.

Claire smiled through tears.

“He saw the needle.”

Owen nodded.

“I thought it was hurting you.”

“It was.”

Claire hugged him harder.

“You were trying to help.”

Behind them, police handcuffed Margaret.

She no longer looked powerful.

She looked old.

Small.

Defeated.

As officers pulled her away, she stared at Daniel.

“You’ll regret choosing them.”

Daniel held Owen with one arm and Claire with the other.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“This is the first choice I won’t regret.”

Paramedics rushed Daniel to the hospital.

The bullet had missed bone and major blood vessels.

Claire’s contractions returned from the stress.

Doctors again managed to stop labor.

The twins remained safe.

Owen refused to leave Claire’s room.

He slept curled in a chair beside her bed.

Daniel watched from his own wheelchair the next morning.

Detective Ruiz entered.

“We found Victor’s full archive.”

Daniel looked up.

“How bad?”

“Worse than we thought.”

Victor had secretly recorded Margaret for years.

Financial crimes.

Threats.

Conversations about William.

Conversations about Emily.

Ruiz sat.

“There’s enough evidence to reopen your father’s death investigation.”

“And Emily?”

“Her poisoning too.”

Daniel swallowed.

“What happens to Marcus?”

“Depends on prosecutors.”

“He cooperated.”

“He also committed serious crimes.”

Daniel nodded.

He wouldn’t protect his brother from consequences.

Not anymore.

Ruiz hesitated.

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“Victor kept backup recordings.”

“Of the dining room?”

“Everything.”

She handed Daniel a tablet.

“Your mother wasn’t the only person planning against you.”

Daniel frowned.

Ruiz pressed play.

Marcus appeared inside the warehouse office two months earlier.

Victor sat across from him.

Marcus said,

“Once Mother finishes destroying Owen’s credibility, we remove her too.”

Daniel stared.

Ruiz paused.

“Marcus wasn’t simply being blackmailed.”

Daniel felt another betrayal settle over him.

“He was playing both sides.”

Ruiz nodded.

“He intended to let Margaret take the blame.”

Daniel looked toward Owen sleeping.

“How far was he willing to go?”

May you like

Ruiz’s silence answered before her words did.

“Farther than he admitted.”
