Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Siege

Gerald’s hand shook.

Charles remained seated at the conference table.

“Do it,” Samuel ordered through the screen.

Gerald tightened his grip.

Liam moved in front of his father.

“You’ll have to shoot me first.”

“Move,” Gerald said.

“No.”

Avery watched the armed men near the doors.

One stood beside the fire alarm.

Another guarded the judge.

Noah sat three chairs away from Avery, his hands visible on the table.

His eyes moved toward a glass water pitcher.

Avery understood.

He needed a distraction.

Samuel’s voice hardened.

“Gerald, you know what happens if you fail.”

Gerald looked toward the screen.

“You promised my daughter would be safe.”

“She is safe because you obey me.”

Avery spoke.

“What does he have on you?”

Gerald’s eyes flicked toward her.

“Be quiet.”

“Did he threaten your daughter?”

“I said be quiet.”

“He threatened all of us,” Avery continued. “That is how he survives. He convinces everyone they are alone.”

Samuel leaned closer to the camera.

“Shoot Charles.”

Avery looked directly at Gerald.

“If you kill him, your daughter loses you anyway.”

Gerald’s jaw clenched.

The gun moved slightly downward.

Samuel saw it.

“Gerald, your daughter’s medical records will be released. Her treatment will end. The insurance arrangement disappears.”

Now Avery understood.

Gerald’s daughter was sick.

Samuel had paid for treatment and turned the money into a chain.

Charles spoke quietly.

“Sterling Financial will cover every medical expense.”

Gerald laughed bitterly.

“You think I trust another Sterling promise?”

“You shouldn’t,” Charles said. “Trust Avery.”

Everyone looked at her.

Charles continued.

“If she gains control, she can guarantee the treatment through an independent trust.”

Avery nodded.

“I will.”

Samuel’s face twisted.

“Do not listen to her.”

Avery held Gerald’s gaze.

“I will put it in writing before I leave this room. Your daughter will be protected whether you help us or not.”

Gerald’s gun lowered another inch.

Samuel shouted, “Now!”

Gerald turned and fired at the screen.

The monitor exploded.

At the same instant, Noah hurled the glass pitcher at the nearest gunman.

Chaos erupted.

Liam pulled Avery beneath the table.

The judge crawled toward the wall.

Noah tackled one attacker while Gerald turned his weapon on another.

Detective Ruiz, waiting outside with federal agents, heard the gunfire and breached the doors.

The siege ended in less than ninety seconds.

One gunman was wounded.

Two surrendered.

Gerald dropped his weapon and raised his hands.

Charles survived.

But Samuel disappeared from the video network before investigators traced the signal.

Afterward, Avery sat in the hallway while a medic checked a cut on her forehead.

Gerald passed in handcuffs.

He stopped in front of her.

“My daughter’s name is Emily.”

“I’ll keep my promise.”

He looked at her as though he did not understand why.

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“No,” Avery said. “But Emily doesn’t owe Samuel for what you did.”

Gerald’s eyes filled with tears.

He told Detective Ruiz where Samuel had likely gone.

Sterling Tower.

The company’s newest headquarters in Manhattan.

Samuel had secretly installed a data destruction system in the building’s server floors. If the court rejected him as trustee, he planned to erase decades of financial records and trigger automated transfers worth billions.

“He wants to leave the company empty,” Charles said.

The judge reconvened the hearing under federal protection.

After reviewing the recordings, the forged agreement, and Gerald’s testimony, she rejected Samuel’s appointment.

Then she activated the protective trust.

Voting control of Sterling Financial transferred to Avery as Margaret’s lawful descendant.

The room went silent.

Avery now controlled the company that had spent decades trying to erase her family.

But the victory lasted less than a minute.

Every screen in the building turned red.

A countdown appeared.

59:59.

A message followed.

STERLING TOWER SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED.

TRANSFER OF ASSETS IN PROGRESS.

Liam looked at Avery.

“If that countdown reaches zero, the company collapses.”

May you like

Avery stood.

“Then we have fifty-nine minutes to stop him.”
