Chapter 13 - The Cost of Truth

Samuel Price was taken into federal custody.
Within forty-eight hours, prosecutors charged him with murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, extortion, fraud, and attempted destruction of financial records.
The evidence in his archive triggered investigations across six states.
Judges resigned.
Executives were arrested.
Former regulators claimed they had been threatened.
News organizations called it the largest corporate corruption scandal in decades.
Sterling Financial survived, but barely.
Its stock lost more than half its value.
Clients withdrew billions.
Employees feared layoffs.
Avery sat in the chairman’s office on the top floor of Sterling Tower, looking at a list of people whose lives depended on decisions she had never expected to make.
Liam entered carrying Leo.
The bruise across his chest had turned dark purple, but he refused to rest.
“He’s hungry,” Liam said.
“He’s always hungry.”
Avery took Leo and kissed his forehead.
For a few moments, the company disappeared.
There was only her son.
Liam sat across from her.
“The board approved your emergency plan.”
“Not all of it.”
“No. Three directors resigned instead.”
“They helped conceal fraud.”
“They said their resignations were a matter of principle.”
Avery smiled without humor.
“People discover principles when subpoenas arrive.”
Her plan would sell the family’s private aviation division, several luxury properties, and part of the Sterling art collection.
The money would protect employee pensions and repay victims of the Harland fraud.
Charles supported the proposal.
Victoria called it the public dismantling of four generations of achievement.
Avery called it restitution.
Liam looked at the papers on her desk.
“You haven’t signed the permanent chairmanship agreement.”
“I don’t know if I want this life.”
“You don’t have to keep it.”
“If I leave now, the board may return to the same people who created the problem.”
“Then stay long enough to change the structure.”
Avery studied him.
“What happens to us?”
Liam did not answer immediately.
Their love had survived danger.
That did not mean it had healed.
“I want to come home,” he said.
“You still live with me.”
“You know what I mean.”
Avery looked down at Leo.
“I don’t know whether I can trust the man who watched his mother humiliate me for three years.”
“I understand.”
“I don’t need another apology.”
“I know.”
“I need to know you changed because you understand what you did, not because your family finally hurt you too.”
Liam nodded.
“I started therapy yesterday.”
Avery looked up.
He continued.
“I spent my whole life believing peace meant no one was shouting. But our house was never peaceful. You were simply suffering quietly enough that I could ignore it.”
Tears filled Avery’s eyes.
Liam did not reach for her.
He allowed her the space to decide.
“I love you,” he said. “But I won’t use love to pressure you into forgiving me.”
Avery looked at the man across from her.
For the first time, he was not asking her to make the difficult moment easier.
A knock sounded.
Maya Bennett entered carrying an envelope.
“The laboratory confirmed the remaining genetic tests,” she said.
Avery frowned.
“We already proved my connection to Margaret.”
“This test concerns Leo.”
Liam stood.
“What about him?”
Maya placed the envelope on the desk.
“The hospital reported irregularities in the original paternity documentation.”
Avery stared at her.
“That’s impossible.”
“Samuel had access to the private laboratory used by the Sterling family. He altered several records.”
Liam’s face went white.
“Are you saying Leo isn’t mine?”
Avery felt as though the floor vanished.
Maya opened the envelope.
“The independent test confirms Leo is your biological son.”
Liam exhaled.
“But,” Maya continued, “Samuel changed the original test to make it appear Charles was Leo’s father.”
Avery’s stomach turned.
“Why?”
“To create evidence of a scandal if he needed to destroy the family publicly.”
Liam looked furious.
Maya handed them another document.
“We also discovered Samuel had prepared a media release accusing Avery and Charles of an affair.”
Avery covered Leo’s ears instinctively.
Even after Samuel’s arrest, his poison remained.
Liam tore the false report in half.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It may,” Maya said. “The report was already sent to a journalist with instructions to publish if Samuel failed to check in.”
Avery’s phone rang.
The headline was already online.
BILLIONAIRE HEIR MAY NOT BE LIAM STERLING’S SON.
Within minutes, reporters gathered outside the tower.
Avery looked at Liam.
The old Sterling strategy would have been denial, silence, and legal threats.
May you like
Instead, Liam reached for her hand.
“Let’s tell the truth before someone else sells the lie.”
