Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED OUT

The trial lasted months.

Victor's empire collapsed piece by piece.

Companies disappeared.

Accounts were seized.

Names were exposed.

People who had spent years hiding behind money suddenly faced the consequences of their actions.

Blake testified.

Not because he had changed.

Because he wanted a reduced sentence.

Mara did not forgive him.

She did not need to.

Forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

And forgetting was not something she owed anyone.

The day she testified, the courtroom was full.

Mara sat quietly.

Adrian sat behind her.

He had wanted to stand beside her.

She had told him no.

Not because she didn't want him there.

Because she wanted to do this herself.

When her name was called, she stood.

She walked to the witness stand.

Blake looked at her.

For the first time in two years, he could not reach her.

He could not touch her.

Could not whisper into her ear.

Could not tell her what to say.

Mara sat.

The prosecutor asked questions.

She answered.

About the first time Blake hurt her.

About the isolation.

The control.

The threats.

The bruises.

The lies.

She did not describe every detail.

She didn't need to.

The truth was powerful enough.

Then Blake's lawyer stood.

“Mrs. Bennett, you remained married to my client for two years.”

“Yes.”

“You continued living with him.”

“Yes.”

“You accepted his money.”

“Yes.”

“You traveled with him.”

“Yes.”

“You signed documents.”

“Yes.”

The lawyer paused.

“Would you say your relationship was complicated?”

Mara looked at him.

“No.”

He blinked.

“No?”

“It was abusive.”

The courtroom became silent.

The lawyer continued.

“You are saying you had no responsibility for your own actions?”

Mara looked at him.

“I am saying I was manipulated.”

“But you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mara took a breath.

“Because I was afraid.”

The lawyer smiled faintly.

“Afraid of what?”

Mara looked toward Blake.

Then back at the lawyer.

“Of dying.”

No one spoke.

The lawyer sat down.

Mara's testimony continued.

When she finished, she walked past Blake.

He whispered:

“Mara.”

She stopped.

But she did not turn.

He tried again.

“Mara.”

She looked over her shoulder.

Blake stared at her.

“You really think he loves you?”

Mara looked at Adrian.

He was standing near the courtroom doors.

Then she looked back at Blake.

“I don't know.”

Blake smiled.

Mara continued.

“But I know I love myself enough to leave.”

Then she walked away.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.

Mara ignored them.

She walked toward Adrian.

He looked at her.

“You okay?”

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

He studied her.

“Really?”

She smiled.

“For the first time.”

Adrian reached for her hand.

Then stopped.

Mara noticed.

She took his hand herself.

He looked at her.

She smiled.

“You can hold my hand.”

His fingers closed around hers.

The moment was simple.

But it meant everything.

A month later, Blake was sentenced.

Victor received a life sentence.

The empire was gone.

But Mara's life was just beginning.
