Chapter 16 - A LIFE AFTER THE FIRE

Mara moved out of Adrian's estate.

Not because she hated the place.

Because she needed a home that belonged to her.

She bought a small house outside Baltimore.

It had a garden.

A white porch.

A kitchen with too many windows.

The first night there, Mara slept with the bedroom door unlocked.

The next night, she slept with the windows open.

The night after that, she realized she had gone an entire day without thinking about Blake.

It was the greatest victory of her life.

Adrian visited often.

But he never appeared without calling first.

Sometimes they had dinner.

Sometimes they sat on the porch.

Sometimes they said nothing.

Their relationship was not easy.

Adrian had spent his entire life controlling danger.

Mara had spent hers surviving control.

They had to learn each other carefully.

One evening, Adrian arrived with a box.

Mara looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Something for you.”

She opened it.

Inside was a ring.

Not a diamond.

Not expensive.

Simple.

Elegant.

Mara stared.

Adrian said, “You don't have to wear it.”

She looked at him.

“What is it?”

“A choice.”

Mara picked it up.

“There are no cameras inside?”

Adrian's expression became serious.

“No.”

“No hidden microphones?”

“No.”

“No conditions?”

“No.”

Mara looked at the ring.

“Then what does it mean?”

Adrian took a breath.

“It means I love you.”

Mara froze.

Adrian continued.

“You don't have to say it back.”

She looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Because you don't owe me anything.”

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

Adrian looked away.

“I know I have a lot to learn.”

“You do.”

He almost smiled.

“I know.”

Mara placed the ring on the table.

Then walked toward him.

Adrian watched her.

She wrapped her arms around him.

He stood still.

Then slowly held her.

Mara rested her head against his chest.

“I love you too.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time in his life, he allowed himself to believe he might have something worth losing.

Months passed.

Mara's pregnancy became more difficult.

Adrian became impossibly protective.

Mara hated it.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“Stop hovering.”

“I’m not hovering.”

“You've been standing behind me for ten minutes.”

“I’m making sure you don't fall.”

“I’m sitting.”

He looked at her.

“Exactly.”

Mara laughed.

He smiled.

It was still rare.

But she loved it when it happened.

Elena became part of their lives.

She and Adrian had years to recover.

Mara's mother moved closer.

The family was not perfect.

But it was real.

One evening, Mara stood in the nursery.

The room was painted soft white.

A small crib stood near the window.

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

He looked at the crib.

Then at Mara.

“Are you ready?”

Mara smiled.

“No.”

“Me neither.”

She took his hand.

“Good.”

He looked at her.

“Why is that good?”

“Because we’ll figure it out together.”

Adrian kissed her forehead.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Mara noticed.

“What?”

He answered.

“Cross.”

He listened.

Then said:

“Are you sure?”

Mara watched him.

He ended the call.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Victor escaped.”

Mara's heart stopped.

“What?”

“He was transferred.”

“Escaped?”

Adrian nodded.

For a moment, fear returned.

Old fear.

Familiar fear.

Then Mara looked at the nursery.

At the crib.

At Adrian.

And the fear changed.

She was not alone.

Adrian took her hand.

“We’ll keep you safe.”

Mara looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“No?”

“We will keep our family safe.”

Adrian stared at her.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Outside, the night settled over the house.

Somewhere in the darkness, Victor Cross was free.

But he was no longer facing the frightened woman he had once controlled.

May you like

He was facing Mara Bennett.

And she was no longer running.
