Chapter 9 - Claire’s Missing MinuteThe memory card had been damaged.

Graham Vale was undergoing surgery.

Vanessa had surrendered.

Yet Henry was gone.

That meant somebody else was still working for Charles.

Samuel survived the attack long enough to give Nate one detail.

The kidnappers had arrived in a white ambulance.

They wore medical uniforms.

Henry had been asleep.

Samuel fought.

He was shot in the shoulder.

The ambulance disappeared before federal backup arrived.

Anna stood beside Samuel’s hospital bed.

“Did Henry say anything?”

Samuel struggled to speak.

“He… left something.”

“What?”

Samuel pointed weakly toward his jacket.

Nate searched the pocket.

A tiny plastic dinosaur.

Henry’s favorite red triceratops.

Wrapped around it was a string.

Anna recognized it.

“He’s leaving a trail.”

Henry had once watched Hansel and Gretel with her in the staff kitchen.

Afterward, Anna taught him that if he ever got lost, he should leave objects behind whenever possible.

Nate swallowed.

His four-year-old son was trying to rescue himself.

Traffic cameras spotted the ambulance near Interstate 87.

Then it disappeared.

At an abandoned gas station, police found Henry’s blue crayon beside the curb.

Twenty miles north, another dinosaur appeared near a service road.

The trail led toward a place Eleanor recognized.

An old Ashford hunting lodge in the Adirondacks.

Charles had not visited publicly in decades.

By evening, Nate and Anna were traveling north with Agent Moreno.

Anna stared out the window.

“He must be terrified.”

“He’s smart.”

“He’s four.”

Nate had no answer.

At the lodge, agents found the ambulance.

Empty.

Fresh tire tracks continued deeper into the forest.

A storm was approaching.

Moreno ordered tactical teams forward.

Nate refused to remain behind.

“So arrest me.”

Moreno glared.

“If you interfere—”

“My son is somewhere in those woods.”

Anna stepped beside him.

“And mine.”

The word landed differently now.

Mine.

Neither had spoken openly about what happened next.

Custody.

Vanessa.

Henry learning the truth.

There had been no time.

The forest swallowed every sound.

Half a mile from the lodge, they found a red jacket.

Henry’s.

Anna lifted it.

Still warm.

“He’s close.”

Then a child screamed.

Nate ran.

Moreno shouted after him.

He did not stop.

The scream came from a ravine.

Nate reached the edge.

Below, a man dragged Henry toward a vehicle.

Henry kicked wildly.

“Daddy!”

Nate slid down the muddy slope.

The kidnapper pulled a gun.

Anna threw a rock.

It struck the man’s wrist.

The gun fired into the trees.

Nate tackled him.

They rolled through mud.

The man was larger.

Nate did not care.

He hit him until Moreno’s agents dragged him away.

Anna reached Henry first.

The boy crashed into her arms.

“Mop lady!”

Anna laughed through tears.

“My name is Anna.”

Henry clung to her.

“I know.”

She froze.

“What?”

“The bad man told me.”

Nate knelt.

“What else did he tell you?”

Henry looked frightened.

“He said she isn’t my mommy.”

Anna and Nate exchanged a look.

“Who?”

“Mommy Vanessa.”

Nate’s chest tightened.

Henry whispered:

“He said Anna is.”

Silence.

The truth had reached their son in the cruelest possible way.

Anna held him.

“You don’t have to understand anything tonight.”

Henry looked between them.

“Are you my mommy?”

Anna began crying.

Nate put his hand on Henry’s back.

Anna answered carefully.

“I’m the woman who gave birth to you.”

“Then Vanessa lied?”

Nate said, “Adults made terrible choices before you were born. None of that is because of you.”

Henry looked down.

“Does Mommy Vanessa love me?”

That question hurt most.

Nate did not know.

But when they returned to New York, Vanessa asked to see Henry.

Federal prosecutors allowed a supervised visit.

Henry entered the room holding Nate’s hand.

Vanessa burst into tears.

“Baby.”

Henry stayed beside Nate.

“Are you my mommy?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.”

Henry’s lip trembled.

“But I changed your diapers. I stayed awake when you were sick. I sang that ridiculous dinosaur song every night for two years.”

“Why did you lie?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Henry looked at her.

“Did you help Grandpa take me?”

“No.”

For once, Nate believed her.

Vanessa had participated in fraud.

She had helped Charles manipulate Nate.

She knew parts of the plan.

But she claimed she never agreed to murder Henry.

When Charles ordered it, she turned against him.

Vanessa looked at Anna.

“I’m sorry.”

Anna’s expression hardened.

“You knew?”

“Not at first.”

“When?”

“After he was born.”

Anna’s face crumpled.

“You held my baby while I thought I’d never had one.”

Vanessa sobbed.

“I was raised to believe he belonged to me.”

“You were an adult.”

“I know.”

There was no easy forgiveness.

There should not have been.

Before the guards took Vanessa away, she called Nate back.

“There’s something Charles doesn’t know I kept.”

“What?”

“A video Claire made.”

Nate froze.

Vanessa whispered, “Claire gave it to me the night before she died.”

“Why didn’t you show anyone?”

“Because it proves I knew what Charles was doing.”

“Where is it?”

Vanessa looked at Henry.

“In his nursery.”

Nate frowned.

“We searched everything.”

“Not everything.”

She told him where.

Inside the wooden rocking horse Nate had given Henry on his first birthday.

That night they opened it.

A memory card dropped out.

Claire appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Smiling nervously.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, something happened to me.”

Nate covered his mouth.

Claire continued.

“My father is alive.”

Then she said something none of them expected.

“But Charles Ashford is not the only person you should be afraid of.”

Claire lifted several documents.

“The person helping him controls judges, police officers, hospitals, and half the politicians Charles ever bought.”

She looked frightened.

May you like

“And his name is—”

The video cut to black.
