Chapter 10 - The Woman Wearing Eleanor’s FaceThe impossible lasted less than three seconds.

Claire’s final name was gone.
But Nate had learned something from the last week.
Missing evidence rarely disappeared accidentally.
Somebody wanted them to stop with Charles.
That meant the larger network still existed.
Federal investigators reconstructed fifty-three seconds of deleted footage.
Claire’s voice returned in fragments.
“…Reeves introduced them…”
“…not Graham…”
“…state senator…”
“…medical contracts…”
Then one clear phrase:
“Judge Harrison Cole.”
Agent Moreno immediately went silent.
Harrison Cole had served on the federal bench for fourteen years.
Before that, he had been state attorney general.
He was respected, powerful, and famous for prosecuting organized corruption.
He had also signed the sealed orders ending the original investigation into Claire’s death.
Moreno stared at the screen.
“If this is true, Claire wasn’t exposing one criminal.”
Nate understood.
“She was exposing the system protecting him.”
Cole had protected Charles’s financial network for years.
Charles provided money.
Cole provided legal invisibility.
Reeves provided medical manipulation.
Graham moved corporate assets.
Vanessa served as access to Nate.
Claire discovered all of it.
And died.
Moreno warned Nate not to move.
He ignored her in one very specific way.
He publicly announced a press conference.
Topic:
New evidence concerning Claire Ashford’s death.
Within six hours, Nate received a call.
Harrison Cole.
“Nathaniel.”
Nate put the call on speaker for Moreno.
“Judge.”
“I understand your family is going through a difficult period.”
“You mean finding out my dead father is alive and murdered my sister?”
Cole sighed.
“Trauma can make patterns appear where none exist.”
The exact same language Reeves had used.
Nate smiled.
“Funny.”
“What?”
“You sound like my psychiatrist.”
Silence.
Then Cole said, “Cancel tomorrow’s press conference.”
“Why?”
“Because reckless accusations destroy innocent lives.”
“Claire’s life was destroyed.”
“Claire was unstable.”
Nate’s smile vanished.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The script.”
Cole ended the call.
That night someone attempted to kill Agent Moreno.
Her brakes failed on a bridge.
She survived by steering into a barrier.
The next morning Nate held the press conference anyway.
He did not reveal Cole’s name.
Instead, he announced that Claire’s complete archive had been copied and distributed to multiple secure locations.
That was partly a lie.
But the reaction was immediate.
Harrison Cole boarded a private plane.
Federal agents arrested him before takeoff.
A search warrant uncovered encrypted communications with Charles, Graham, and Reeves going back twelve years.
Claire finally had justice.
Almost.
Because prosecutors found another message.
Sent two days before Nate returned from Europe.
ANNA MERCER HAS ENTERED THE HOUSE. DO NOT REMOVE HER. SHE MAY LEAD US TO CLAIRE’S ARCHIVE.
They had known Anna was there.
Every frightened moment.
Every whispered warning.
Every apparent secret conversation.
Someone had allowed it.
Nate showed Anna.
“They were using me,” she whispered.
“Yes.”
“They wanted me to find the box.”
“Probably.”
Anna looked sick.
“Then Henry’s kidnapping…”
“Was real once we found too much.”
She sat down.
For five years she had believed she was running from Charles.
In reality, he had occasionally allowed her to run because she might eventually lead him to Claire’s hidden evidence.
Anna began shaking.
Nate crouched in front of her.
“He doesn’t control you anymore.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
“Because tomorrow he stands in court.”
The federal arraignment became national news.
Charles Ashford entered wearing prison gray.
No tailored suit.
No private aircraft.
No servants.
For the first time, he looked old.
Nate sat beside Anna.
Eleanor sat two rows behind them.
Henry was safely elsewhere with Samuel.
The prosecutor listed charges.
Charles looked at Nate.
Then at Anna.
He smiled.
As guards led him out, he spoke quietly.
“You think a courtroom changes what Henry is?”
Nate stood.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Charles smiled wider.
“You still don’t know why I chose Anna.”
Nate froze.
Charles was dragged away.
Anna went pale.
That night they reopened her medical records.
They found one final document.
Charles had selected Anna for a reason.
Not because she was Claire’s friend.
Not because she was convenient.
Because Anna’s biological father was someone else.
A man whose identity had been sealed at birth.
Eleanor saw the name first.
She sat down hard.
“No.”
Nate read it.
Anna’s biological father was Richard Mercer.
Charles Ashford’s older half-brother.
Anna was an Ashford by blood.
Which meant Henry was not merely Nate’s son.
Charles had deliberately combined both branches of the Ashford family line to create what he considered the “perfect heir.”
Anna stared at the report.
Then she laughed once.
A broken, disgusted sound.
“He treated us like breeding animals.”
Nate took the page.
And tore it in half.
Then again.
And again.
“Henry is not his experiment.”
Anna looked at him.
“He’s our son.”
Nate said it without thinking.
Our.
Anna’s eyes filled.
But neither had time to examine what the word meant.
Because Henry appeared in the doorway holding Samuel’s phone.
“Dad?”
Nate turned.
Henry looked confused.
“Grandma is on the phone.”
Eleanor was standing right behind Nate.
They all froze.
Henry held up the screen.
A live video call showed another Eleanor Ashford.
May you like
Bound to a chair.
And suddenly Nate realized the woman standing behind him was not his mother.
