Chapter 2 - The Family Ethan Never KnewEthan Walker had spent most of his adult life believing he could understand a person by what they possessed.

Grace Walker did not fall.
She did not scream.
She simply stood beside the marble fireplace with one hand pressed against her burning cheek and the other instinctively protecting the small curve of her pregnant belly.
Across from her, Ethan Walker was breathing hard.
For one strange second, he looked almost shocked by what he had done.
Almost.
Then his expression hardened.
Behind him stood Lauren Pierce, the woman Ethan had brought into their home on the night of their fifth wedding anniversary.
The woman wearing a champagne-colored silk dress, diamond earrings Grace had never seen before, and the perfume Ethan once claimed gave him headaches.
Lauren touched her throat dramatically.
“Ethan…”
But Grace saw the satisfaction in her eyes.
A second earlier, Lauren had been standing in Grace’s kitchen with one hand on Ethan’s shoulder, smiling as she explained that Grace needed to “accept reality.”
Reality.
Apparently reality meant Ethan had been sleeping with Lauren for nearly a year.
Reality meant the business trips had not been business trips.
Reality meant the late-night phone calls, the locked bathroom door, and the unexplained hotel receipts all had names now.
And the name was Lauren Pierce.
Grace had listened without shouting.
She had asked only one question.
“Does she know I’m pregnant?”
Lauren had laughed.
That laugh had done something to Grace.
She had turned toward Lauren and said quietly, “Get out of my house.”
Ethan had stepped between them.
“Don’t speak to her that way.”
Grace stared at her husband.
“She’s your mistress.”
“She’s someone who actually understands me.”
Grace felt her chest tighten.
Then Lauren had smiled and said, “Maybe if you hadn’t spent five years pretending to be some perfect little housewife, Ethan wouldn’t have gotten bored.”
Grace looked at her.
“Leave.”
Lauren moved closer instead.
“You really don’t know when you’ve lost, do you?”
Grace’s hand had tightened at her side.
“Get out.”
And that was when Ethan hit her.
Now silence filled the enormous living room.
Rain tapped softly against the windows.
Grace slowly lowered her hand from her cheek.
There was no fear in her expression.
That bothered Ethan more than tears would have.
“You shouldn’t have pushed me,” he said.
Grace blinked.
Lauren glanced toward him.
Even she seemed surprised.
Ethan stepped closer.
“You’ve been impossible for months. Suspicious. Emotional. Acting like everything belongs to you.”
Grace’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“I’m carrying your child.”
“And that doesn’t give you the right to disrespect me.”
Grace stared at the man she had loved since she was twenty-four.
The man she had defended when her family disliked him.
The man she had married against nearly everyone’s advice.
The man she had protected from knowing more about her past than she believed he needed to know.
Something inside her became very still.
Then she reached for her phone.
Ethan laughed.
“What are you doing? Calling the police?”
“No.”
Her thumb moved over the screen.
Lauren folded her arms.
“Calling your lawyer?”
Grace shook her head.
She pressed one name.
Ethan looked amused.
“Who, then?”
Grace raised the phone to her ear.
The call connected on the first ring.
A deep male voice answered.
“Grace?”
She closed her eyes.
For the first time that night, her composure almost broke.
“Daniel.”
The voice changed instantly.
“What happened?”
Grace looked at Ethan.
“He hit me.”
Silence.
Not ordinary silence.
The kind that felt like a door being locked.
Daniel spoke again.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Are you hurt?”
“My cheek.”
Grace looked down at her stomach.
“The baby seems okay.”
Daniel inhaled slowly.
“Stay where you are.”
Ethan snorted.
“Who is Daniel?”
Grace didn’t answer him.
Daniel said, “We’re four minutes away.”
Grace opened her eyes.
“We?”
Then she heard another voice in the background.
Michael.
And another.
Lucas.
Her three brothers.
Grace whispered, “All of you?”
Daniel’s answer was calm.
“Yes.”
The line disconnected.
Ethan frowned.
“Brothers?”
Grace slid the phone back onto the table.
Lauren looked confused.
“You said you barely had any family.”
Grace met her eyes.
“I said my family and I weren’t close.”
Ethan laughed again.
“What are they going to do? Lecture me?”
Grace looked toward the front doors.
“No.”
She almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“They’re going to meet you.”
Three minutes later, headlights swept across the tall windows.
One black SUV stopped outside.
Then another.
Then a third.
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
Grace heard car doors opening.
Lauren moved toward the window.
“What the hell?”
Three men in dark suits crossed the driveway through the rain.
The first was Daniel Hale, Grace’s eldest brother.
Forty-one.
Six-foot-three.
Former federal prosecutor.
Now managing partner of one of Manhattan’s most feared litigation firms.
Beside him walked Michael Hale.
Thirty-eight.
Founder and CEO of Hale Security International, whose clients included diplomats, technology billionaires, and half the Fortune 100.
The third man was Lucas Hale.
Thirty-five.
Private-equity billionaire.
The face of Hale Capital.
The same Lucas Hale whose photograph Ethan had once pointed at in a magazine and called “the kind of man who could destroy a company before breakfast.”
Grace watched the three men climb the steps.
Ethan turned pale.
“No.”
Grace said nothing.
The doors opened.
Daniel entered first.
His eyes moved immediately to Grace’s cheek.
Then to Ethan.
Michael saw it too.
His jaw tightened.
Lucas stopped completely.
For five long seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan forced a nervous smile.
“Mr. Hale.”
Lucas looked at him as if he were something unpleasant stuck to the bottom of a shoe.
Ethan swallowed.
“You’re… you’re Lucas Hale.”
“Yes.”
“But why are you here?”
Lucas did not answer.
Daniel crossed the room and gently touched Grace’s face.
“Did he do this?”
Grace nodded.
Daniel turned.
Ethan’s voice suddenly became defensive.
“It was an argument. She pushed me too far.”
Michael took one step forward.
Ethan took one step back.
Then Grace said the words Ethan would remember for the rest of his life.
“Ethan, these are my brothers.”
His face emptied.
Lauren whispered, “What?”
Grace’s eyes never left her husband.
“Daniel. Michael. Lucas.”
Ethan looked from one man to another.
Then back to Grace.
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Lucas removed his raincoat and handed it to the man standing behind him.
“You’ve been married to our sister for five years,” he said quietly.
“And somehow…”
His gaze dropped toward Grace’s pregnant stomach.
“…you never bothered to learn who she was.”
Ethan’s knees nearly buckled.
May you like
But Daniel’s next words were worse.
“Before tonight is over,” he said, “you’re going to learn.”
