Chapter 3 - The House on the HudsonGrace woke at 3:17 in the morning in a bedroom she had not slept in for almost six years.

Cars.

Homes.

Clothes.

Connections.

Money.

That belief had served him well while climbing through New York’s competitive real-estate world.

It had also made him catastrophically wrong about his wife.

He stared at Grace as though she had transformed in front of him.

“Your brothers?”

Grace did not answer immediately.

Daniel stood beside her, studying the red mark spreading across her cheek.

Michael had moved toward the foyer, where one of his security men quietly closed the doors.

Lucas remained near the fireplace.

His expression was frightening because it contained almost no emotion at all.

Lauren took a slow step backward.

“Grace…”

Grace turned toward her.

Lauren’s confidence had vanished.

Five minutes earlier, she had been smiling in another woman’s home.

Now she looked like someone who had finally noticed the cliff beneath her feet.

Ethan ran a hand through his hair.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

Lucas lifted an eyebrow.

“Which part?”

“You.”

Ethan pointed toward him.

“You’re Lucas Hale.”

“Last time I checked.”

“Hale Capital.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at Grace.

“Your name was Bennett when we met.”

Grace’s voice was quiet.

“Grace Evelyn Hale Bennett.”

The room went still.

Bennett had been her mother’s maiden name.

After college, Grace had chosen to use it professionally because the Hale surname attracted attention she did not want.

Ethan knew she came from money.

A little money, he had assumed.

An old family in Connecticut.

Perhaps a trust fund.

Nothing more.

Grace had never lied.

But Ethan had rarely asked questions that did not concern him.

Her family’s company?

He had never asked.

Her brothers’ careers?

He remembered vague answers and changed subjects.

Why had they not attended the wedding?

He knew there had been a disagreement.

He had simply assumed Grace’s family disapproved because they were arrogant.

In truth, they had disapproved because Daniel had discovered Ethan had lied about debt, Michael had uncovered gambling payments hidden through business accounts, and Lucas believed Ethan loved proximity to wealth more than he loved Grace.

Grace had married him anyway.

Daniel turned toward Ethan.

“Did you know she nearly lost this baby eight weeks ago?”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Grace looked down.

He genuinely did not know.

That should not have surprised her.

He had been in Miami with Lauren during the emergency.

Grace had told him she had gone to the doctor.

Ethan had replied with a thumbs-up emoji.

Daniel continued.

“She spent seven hours in the hospital.”

“Grace…”

“Don’t.”

Her voice stopped him.

Ethan looked wounded.

It almost made her laugh.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re worried about me now.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t ask.”

“I was working.”

Lucas gave a humorless smile.

“At the Fontainebleau?”

Ethan’s head snapped toward him.

Lauren went white.

Michael removed his phone from his pocket.

“That particular business meeting lasted three nights.”

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

“You’ve been spying on me?”

“No,” Michael said. “You billed portions of your trip to Walker Development while seeking financing from a fund that has minority participation from one of our companies. It appeared in due diligence.”

Ethan stared at him.

Grace turned slowly.

“You knew?”

Michael looked toward her.

“I suspected.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“We were trying to confirm before hurting you.”

Grace laughed once.

It came out bitter.

“Everyone was protecting me except my husband.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Grace, listen to me.”

Daniel immediately moved between them.

“You stay where you are.”

“I’m talking to my wife.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You’re talking to my sister after striking her while she’s pregnant. The rules changed when you raised your hand.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“This is my home.”

Lucas glanced around.

“That’s debatable.”

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lucas looked toward Grace.

She sighed.

“Lucas.”

“You wanted privacy,” Lucas said. “I respected it. But he deserves the truth now.”

“What truth?”

Lucas faced Ethan.

“This house was purchased through the Bennett Family Property Trust.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Grace had told him the house came from an inheritance.

He had assumed the deed was in both their names.

In fact, he had never checked.

Lucas continued.

“You do not own it.”

Ethan laughed nervously.

“I’m her husband.”

“That is not a form of title.”

Lauren’s eyes darted toward the diamond earrings she was wearing.

They had been Grace’s.

She reached up as though suddenly aware of them.

Grace noticed.

“So those came from my jewelry box.”

Lauren’s hand froze.

“No.”

Grace stared at her.

“Take them off.”

Lauren looked at Ethan.

He said nothing.

“Take them off,” Grace repeated.

Lauren removed the earrings with trembling fingers and placed them on the table.

Michael looked toward Grace.

“Do you want us to call the police?”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“For a slap?”

Daniel’s face changed.

That was the first time real anger appeared.

“For assaulting a pregnant woman.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

Grace finally looked at him.

“How was it?”

Ethan opened his mouth.

Grace waited.

No answer came.

She nodded slowly.

“That’s what I thought.”

She turned to Daniel.

“I don’t want to stay here tonight.”

“You won’t.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Grace, come on. We’re married.”

“We were married an hour ago too.”

“Don’t destroy our marriage over one mistake.”

She looked at him.

“One mistake?”

Her laugh was softer this time.

“You brought your mistress into my home on our anniversary.”

Lauren lowered her eyes.

“You let her wear my jewelry.”

Ethan said nothing.

“You told me I needed to know my place.”

Grace touched her cheek.

“And then you showed me where you thought that place was.”

He looked ashamed now.

But shame was not enough.

Grace turned toward Michael.

“I’m ready.”

Michael nodded.

One of his security officers went upstairs to collect a bag.

Ethan watched them.

“You’re leaving?”

Grace looked around the room where she had spent three years trying to build a home.

Photographs.

Flowers.

A baby book sitting unfinished on the side table.

She had imagined bringing their daughter through these doors.

She had imagined Christmas mornings.

First steps.

Birthday parties.

Now the house felt like a stage after the audience had left.

“Yes,” she said.

Ethan reached for her wrist.

Daniel caught his arm before he touched her.

The movement happened so quickly Ethan barely registered it.

Daniel did not twist or threaten.

He simply held Ethan’s wrist and looked into his eyes.

“Never touch her again without permission.”

Then he released him.

Grace walked toward the doors.

Lauren stood frozen.

Lucas paused beside Ethan.

“You know what fascinates me?”

Ethan looked at him.

“You spent five years trying to become important.”

Lucas straightened his cuff.

“And during that entire time, the most valuable connection you ever had was sleeping beside you every night.”

He leaned closer.

“You were simply too arrogant to recognize her.”

Then he walked away.

Outside, rain washed across the driveway.

Michael opened the back door of the SUV.

Grace stopped before getting inside.

Ethan had followed them onto the steps.

“Grace!”

She turned.

He stood beneath the light, soaked by rain.

For one second, she remembered the man who proposed to her in Central Park.

Then she remembered his hand crossing her face.

“I’m sorry!” he shouted.

Grace’s eyes filled with tears.

But her voice remained steady.

“You’re not sorry because you hurt me.”

Ethan stared.

“You’re sorry because you just discovered I wasn’t powerless.”

She climbed into the SUV.

As the cars pulled away, Ethan remained on the steps.

Lauren appeared behind him.

“What happens now?”

Ethan watched the taillights disappear.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced down.

One email.

Then three.

Then seven.

Messages from investors.

A bank.

Two board members.

His attorney.

The first subject line read:

URGENT: WALKER DEVELOPMENT CREDIT REVIEW.

The second:

HALE CAPITAL — TERMINATION OF DISCUSSIONS.

The third:

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING — 8:00 A.M.

Ethan’s face drained of color.

Lauren whispered, “Ethan?”

He looked toward the dark road.

For the first time, he understood something Grace’s brothers had not needed to say.

May you like

The slap had lasted less than a second.

The consequences had already begun.
