Chapter 8 - The Convent Bells

No one believed Veronica truly expected Elena to come alone.
She expected police. She expected Daniel. She expected a trap, because she had built her life around traps.
The rescue plan placed officers on the riverbank, drones above the trees, and a tactical team inside the convent ruins. Elena approached through the front courtyard wearing a hidden camera. The old bell moved overhead in the wind, producing a low, uneven toll.
“Veronica!” Elena called.
Her voice disappeared into the stone corridors.
A lantern glowed inside the chapel. Veronica stood beside the altar in a dark coat, holding a pistol. Lily sat on the floor with her wrists tied, thinner than Elena remembered but unmistakably alive.
For one second, the sisters only stared at each other.
Lily’s face crumpled.
Elena’s knees nearly did the same.
“Let her go,” Elena said.
Veronica laughed softly. “You always were direct. Your mother had the same defect.”
“Our mother died in a car accident.”
“Your mother discovered Henry was hiding company debts. She threatened divorce and an audit.” Veronica’s expression sharpened. “Accidents solve many problems.”
The hidden camera captured every word.
Elena kept moving forward. “You killed her too?”
“I did what was necessary to protect the life Henry promised me.”
Behind Veronica, Lily worked one hand against the rope. Elena saw a small blade hidden between her fingers.
Veronica continued, almost eager now. She admitted manipulating Henry after Elena’s mother died, isolating him from Ruth and June, and helping Crane siphon money from the company. When Henry decided to confess, she poisoned him. When Lily found the files, Veronica convinced her to stage a disappearance and collect evidence against Crane. Then she planted the evidence against Elena.
“Why me?” Elena asked, though she already knew.
“Because Henry trusted you more.” Veronica’s voice cracked with old hatred. “Even when you challenged him, he listened. Lily wanted love. You wanted truth. Truth is more dangerous.”
A stone shifted in the side corridor. Veronica turned toward the sound.
Lily cut the rope and lunged.
The gun fired.
Elena tackled Veronica as Lily rolled behind the altar. The pistol skidded across the floor. Veronica clawed Elena’s face and reached for the weapon, but Daniel emerged from the corridor and kicked it away.
Officers flooded the chapel.
Veronica was handcuffed while screaming that Lily had murdered Henry, that Elena had manipulated everyone, that the family belonged to her.
Elena crawled to Lily.
There was blood on Lily’s sleeve, but the bullet had only grazed her upper arm. Elena pulled her into an embrace so fierce they both cried out.
“I’m sorry,” Lily whispered against her shoulder. “I’m so sorry.”
“You’re alive.” Elena held the back of her head. “That’s all I can understand right now.”
Outside, paramedics treated Lily beneath flashing lights. Reporters gathered beyond the police line. Daniel stood beside Elena as an officer read Veronica her rights.
The nightmare should have ended there.
Instead, Crane appeared on the opposite riverbank.
He raised a rifle.
Daniel saw the scope flash and pushed Elena down.
The shot struck a paramedic’s vehicle. Officers returned fire, but Crane vanished into the trees.
Veronica watched from the patrol car.
For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

“He’ll kill all of you,” she said through the open window. “Because I’m the only one who knows where Henry kept the master ledger.”
Elena stepped closer. “Then you’d better start talking.”
