Chapter 10 - The Prosecutor’s Secret

Malcolm Reed had built his career on certainty.
He spoke in clean sentences, wore perfect suits, and told juries that truth became simple when honest people were brave. His conviction of Elena had made national headlines. He was preparing a campaign for attorney general.
Now Henry’s video placed him inside the conspiracy.
Federal agents examined Reed’s financial records and discovered payments routed through his brother’s consulting firm. In exchange, Reed had suppressed questions about Lily’s missing body, pressured the crime laboratory to rush blood analysis, and blocked Daniel’s requests for independent testing.
Reed learned of the investigation before agents could arrest him.
He vanished.
So did the original evidence from Elena’s case.
A courthouse clerk reported smoke in the basement archive. Sprinklers activated, damaging boxes before firefighters controlled the blaze. The fire was deliberate. Security footage had been erased from the central server.
Only one person had administrator access that morning: Reed.
Crane remained missing. Investigators now believed the two men were working together, destroying evidence and preparing to leave the country.
Then Veronica disappeared from federal custody.
The transport van carrying her to a sealed hearing was struck by a truck on a rural road. Two marshals were injured. By the time backup arrived, Veronica was gone. A witness saw her enter a black sedan.
Lily believed Crane had taken her.
Elena was less certain. “She may have arranged it.”
Daniel agreed. “Either way, they’re consolidating.”
A message arrived that afternoon through the contact form on Daniel’s law firm website. It contained a photograph of Veronica seated beside Crane and Reed at a wooden table. A digital clock in the background showed the current date.
The message read: Bring the master ledger to Pier 14 tomorrow at midnight. No copies. No police. In return, Veronica confesses publicly and names every participant.
“They think we need her confession,” Lily said.
“We don’t,” Elena replied. “Henry’s archive is enough.”
But the photograph contained another detail: behind Veronica was a wall painted with a faded red star. Lily recognized it as the symbol used inside an abandoned Ward Medical Systems warehouse near Norfolk.
The pier was a diversion. The warehouse was the real location.
Federal agents prepared raids on both sites. Elena and Lily were ordered into protective custody at a hotel under guard.
At 11:30 p.m., the fire alarm sounded.
Elena and Lily looked at each other.
“Again?” Lily said.
The hallway filled with smoke. Guards moved them toward the stairwell. On the landing, a masked man fired from below. One guard fell. Elena dragged Lily behind a concrete wall while the second guard returned fire.
The attacker fled through a service exit.
Police found a hotel uniform and a burner phone in the alley. The phone contained one unsent message to Reed: Sisters contained. Proceed.
They had not been trying to kill Elena and Lily.
They had been trying to keep them away from the warehouse.
Elena called Daniel. “The ledger exchange isn’t about escape. They’re going to destroy something at the warehouse.”
“What?”
Lily answered before Elena could.
“The trial subjects,” she said. “Henry wrote that one witness survived. What if there are more?”
May you like
The warehouse had once housed a private clinical unit.
If Crane still kept patients there, they were living evidence.
