Chapter 2 - The Wedding That Never HappenedWhen Lucas entered the ballroom holding his daughter’s hand instead of waiting at the altar, conversations stopped one by one.

The hallway outside the bridal suites at the Hawthorne Estate was nearly empty.
Music drifted through the walls from the ballroom below.
Two hundred guests were waiting.
White roses covered the grand staircase.
Champagne glasses glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.
And somewhere downstairs, the wedding coordinator was probably wondering why the groom had disappeared.
Lucas didn’t care.
“Emma?”
The crying stopped.
Then came a tiny voice.
“Daddy?”
Lucas rushed toward the last door in the hallway.
He grabbed the handle.
Locked.
“Emma, sweetheart, open the door.”
“I can’t.”
Lucas’s stomach tightened.
“What do you mean you can’t?”
A small hand rattled the handle from inside.
“She locked it.”
Lucas froze.
“Who?”
Silence.
Then his eight-year-old daughter whispered something that made every muscle in his body stiffen.
“Vanessa.”
His bride.
Lucas stepped back and slammed his shoulder against the door.
Nothing.
“Mr. Bennett?”
His best man, Aaron, appeared at the end of the hallway.
Lucas pointed.
“Get someone with a key. Now.”
Aaron ran.
Lucas crouched beside the door.
“Emma, talk to me.”
His daughter sniffled.
“She said I was ruining today.”
“Who said that?”
Emma began crying again.
“She said after you married her, I wouldn’t be your real family anymore.”
Lucas felt something cold move through his chest.
“That isn’t true.”
“She said you were going to have new babies.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
For nearly three years, he had raised Emma alone after his first wife, Rachel, died in a highway accident.
Emma had been five.
She still sometimes slept with Rachel’s old scarf beneath her pillow.
Lucas had spent years trying to make his daughter feel safe again.
And Vanessa knew that.
She knew everything.
“She said little girls from old marriages make new wives uncomfortable,” Emma whispered.
Lucas stared at the locked door.
“Did she hurt you?”
Emma hesitated.
That hesitation terrified him more than any answer could have.
“Emma?”
“She grabbed my arm.”
Lucas’s face changed.
Aaron returned with a hotel employee.
The employee shoved a master key into the lock.
The door opened.
Emma practically fell into Lucas’s arms.
Her flower-girl dress was wrinkled.
One ribbon had been torn from her hair.
Her cheeks were wet.
A faint red mark circled her wrist.
Lucas stared at it.
“What happened?”
Emma buried her face against his jacket.
Then footsteps approached.
Vanessa appeared at the other end of the hallway.
She looked breathtaking.
Her ivory gown shimmered beneath the lights.
A diamond necklace rested against her throat.
Her veil flowed behind her.
For one strange second, everything looked exactly as it was supposed to look.
Until Vanessa saw Emma.
Her expression changed.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Lucas saw it.
Fear.
Then the smile returned.
“There you are.”
Lucas stood slowly.
Vanessa approached.
“We’ve been looking everywhere for her.”
Emma tightened her arms around Lucas.
Vanessa noticed.
“What’s wrong?”
Lucas looked at her.
“You tell me.”
Vanessa blinked.
“What?”
“Emma says you locked her in there.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
Emma flinched.
Lucas felt it.
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
“She probably locked herself in by accident. She’s emotional today.”
“She says you grabbed her.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“Lucas.”
“She says you told her she wouldn’t be family after today.”
Aaron looked away.
The hotel employee went completely still.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Can we not do this five minutes before our wedding?”
Lucas stared at the woman he had planned to spend his life with.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Emma has been struggling with the idea of us getting married. We both know that.”
Emma lifted her head.
“You said Mommy was dead and Daddy needed a new family.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Lucas stopped breathing.
Emma continued.
“And you said after today I was going to live somewhere else.”
Lucas looked at Vanessa.
“Somewhere else?”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Emma pointed toward Vanessa’s wedding gown.
“And she has the papers.”
Vanessa’s hand immediately moved toward the hidden pocket sewn into the side of her dress.
Lucas saw it.
So did Aaron.
“What papers?” Lucas asked.
“Nothing.”
Emma shook her head.
“She showed them to Grandma.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
Lucas reached toward the pocket.
Vanessa slapped his hand away.
“Don’t.”
The word echoed through the hallway.
Lucas stared at her.
Then he reached again.
This time Vanessa tried to turn away.
Aaron caught the edge of her veil before she could move.
Lucas pulled a folded envelope from the hidden pocket.
Across the front was the name of a private family-law firm.
Inside were legal documents.
Lucas read the first page.
His vision blurred.
Petition for Modification of Custody and Residential Placement.
Another document proposed enrolling Emma in a boarding academy nearly four hundred miles away.
Another listed Lucas’s future children with Vanessa as the intended beneficiaries of a new family trust.
Emma’s name had been removed.
Lucas slowly raised his eyes.
Downstairs, the wedding music began.
Vanessa whispered, “I can explain.”
Lucas looked at his terrified daughter.
Then at the woman in the wedding dress.
“No.”
He folded the documents.
“You can explain downstairs.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Lucas—”
He took Emma’s hand.
Two hundred people were waiting to watch them get married.

Instead, they were about to learn why the wedding would never happen.
And Vanessa had no idea that the papers hidden inside her dress were only the beginning.
