Chapter 10 - Emma’s Twelve PercentThe board meeting began at ten in the morning.

His name was Colin Marsh.

Former employee of Pike Strategic Services.

Former military mechanic.

Currently living under a different surname in Arizona.

When police approached him, Colin did not run.

He looked at the warrant and said, “I wondered when this would happen.”

That sentence changed everything.

Colin requested immunity negotiations.

Federal investigators joined the case because the growing evidence involved interstate financial transactions, corporate fraud, and potential securities violations.

Lucas waited forty-eight hours before hearing the confession.

Sarah came to his home herself.

Emma was asleep upstairs.

Lucas sat across from the detective.

“Tell me.”

Sarah placed a recorder on the table but didn’t turn it on.

“Colin says he was hired to track Rachel.”

Lucas’s throat tightened.

“By Gregory?”

“Through Gregory’s brother.”

“Why?”

“He was told Rachel was suspected of leaking confidential company information.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“It was a cover story.”

Lucas knew.

Sarah continued.

“Colin watched her for several weeks.”

“Did he tamper with the car?”

“Yes.”

Lucas stopped breathing.

Sarah spoke carefully.

“He says he was instructed to create a mechanical failure.”

Lucas’s eyes filled before he could stop them.

“For the purpose of killing her?”

“He claims he was told the vehicle would fail at low speed.”

Lucas stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“I agree.”

“He loosened something?”

“A stabilizing component near the rear suspension.”

“In the rain.”

“Yes.”

“On a mountain highway.”

“Yes.”

Lucas stood and walked away.

His hands shook.

Sarah waited.

When Lucas turned back, his face was wet.

“Who ordered it?”

“Colin never spoke to Judith.”

“Then who?”

“Gregory.”

Lucas shut his eyes.

Sarah continued.

“He says Gregory personally told him Rachel needed to be frightened.”

“Frightened.”

“Into supporting the merger.”

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“Rachel would never.”

“Apparently Gregory learned that.”

“What does Vanessa have to do with it?”

“Colin saw her once.”

Lucas looked up.

“At Gregory’s office.”

“When?”

“Five days before Rachel died.”

Silence.

“Did he hear what they discussed?”

“No.”

“Then we still can’t say Vanessa knew about the car.”

“No.”

“Judith?”

“We have no direct proof she knew about tampering either.”

Lucas hated legal precision, but understood why it mattered.

Gregory might have acted independently.

Judith might only have been planning long-term financial access.

Vanessa might have known nothing about Rachel’s death.

But all three had been circling his family.

All three had treated Rachel and Emma as obstacles.

Sarah continued.

“Colin says after the crash, Gregory panicked.”

“Because Rachel died.”

“Yes.”

“He hadn’t intended that?”

“According to Colin.”

“Do you believe him?”

Sarah did not answer.

Lucas sat again.

“What happened afterward?”

“Gregory paid Colin to leave the state.”

“So he covered it up.”

“Yes.”

That was enough for prosecutors.

Gregory Pike was arrested the next morning.

The news exploded.

Former Bennett Holdings executive charged in connection with fatal crash of CEO’s wife.

Meridian Capital’s stock positions came under federal scrutiny.

Gregory’s brother resigned from Pike Strategic Services.

Several employees agreed to cooperate.

The corporate conspiracy started collapsing quickly.

But Vanessa surprised everyone.

She requested to speak to prosecutors.

Her attorney negotiated a proffer.

Melissa explained it to Lucas.

“She wants to provide information before charges get worse.”

“Against Gregory?”

“And Judith.”

Lucas stared at the wall.

“Her own mother.”

“She’s afraid.”

“She should be.”

Vanessa claimed she had not known Gregory caused Rachel’s crash.

She admitted knowing her mother had been monitoring the Bennett family before Rachel died.

Judith had believed the Bennett-Sinclair connection could eventually benefit both families.

After Rachel’s death, Judith pushed Vanessa toward Lucas.

Vanessa resisted initially.

Then she met him.

According to her statement, something unexpected happened.

She actually fell in love.

Lucas did not know whether to laugh or be sick.

Vanessa admitted helping Gregory obtain information about Lucas’s schedule and health.

She admitted taking Emma to Brightwell without permission.

She admitted agreeing to the boarding-school plan.

She admitted hiding legal documents in her wedding dress because Judith told her not to risk leaving them at the hotel.

And she admitted locking Emma in the bathroom.

Why?

Her answer was brutally simple.

Emma had overheard Vanessa and Judith discussing the guardianship papers.

The little girl threatened to tell Lucas before the ceremony.

Vanessa panicked.

She locked her inside intending to return after the vows.

Lucas listened to Melissa read the statement.

“She was going to leave Emma in there during the wedding?”

“For approximately twenty minutes.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

“And when she went back?”

“She tried to scare Emma into silence.”

“By telling her she wasn’t family.”

“Yes.”

Lucas stood.

For days he had wondered whether there was some deeper reason.

Some misunderstanding.

There wasn’t.

Vanessa had been minutes away from marrying him when an eight-year-old threatened her plan.

So she locked the child away.

That was the woman Lucas had almost married.

That evening Emma asked a question.

“Is Vanessa going to jail?”

Lucas considered his answer carefully.

“She may.”

“Because she locked me in the bathroom?”

“For several things.”

Emma stared at her stuffed rabbit.

“I don’t want her to die.”

Lucas blinked.

“She isn’t going to die.”

“Grandma said Mommy died because bad people did something.”

Lucas looked toward Diane.

His mother appeared horrified.

“I didn’t tell her details.”

Emma continued.

“Are all bad people going to die?”

Lucas pulled her closer.

“No.”

“What happens?”

“They go to court. Judges decide.”

Emma thought about that.

“Did Vanessa ever love us?”

The question hurt more than everything else.

Lucas wanted to say no.

It would have been easier.

But children deserved truth that did not poison them.

“I think Vanessa had feelings that were real.”

Emma looked confused.

“Then why did she hurt me?”

“Because sometimes people can care about someone and still make selfish, cruel choices.”

“Did Mommy make cruel choices?”

“Everybody makes mistakes.”

“Like locking people in bathrooms?”

“No.”

Lucas almost smiled.

“Not like that.”

Emma leaned against him.

“I miss Mommy.”

“So do I.”

A week later, Rachel’s case was formally reclassified as a homicide investigation.

Gregory was charged with offenses related to her death.

Colin Marsh became a cooperating witness.

Judith remained in custody on kidnapping and financial conspiracy charges.

Vanessa faced a list of charges but continued cooperating.

The scandal devastated the Sinclair family.

Charles filed for divorce from Judith.

He stepped down from the family foundation.

Then he did something Lucas did not expect.

He transferred twenty million dollars of his personal wealth into a new independent charitable trust.

Its mission:

Supporting children who lost parents and families navigating grief.

He named it the Rachel Bennett Children’s Fund.

Lucas almost refused.

Then Emma saw the paperwork.

“Can it help kids whose mommies died?”

“Yes.”

“Then Mommy would like it.”

Lucas signed his approval.

For the first time, something built from the conspiracy created good.

But Bennett Holdings was still in danger.

Meridian Capital had not disappeared.

The shareholder vote Gregory wanted was still scheduled.

And without Gregory publicly controlling the plan, Meridian made a direct hostile offer.

They needed only a small number of shareholders to switch sides.

The vote would take place in three weeks.

Lucas was fighting for his company.

For thousands of employees.

And, unexpectedly, for Emma’s future.

May you like

Because her twelve-percent shareholding might once again determine everything.

This time, however, nobody would speak for her without Lucas listening.
