Chapter 12 - THE INHERITANCE

Thomas Whitmore had been officially declared dead three years earlier.
His funeral had been attended by hundreds.
His ashes had been scattered at sea.
But according to Walter Hayes, Thomas was alive.
Lena did not believe it.
Until Dr. Reed found the records.
A man named Victor Hale had been admitted to a private medical facility in Arizona.
His fingerprints matched Thomas Whitmore.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“My father is alive.”
Margaret sat silently in the hospital bed.
Lena looked at her.
“You knew.”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell anyone?”
“Because he threatened me.”
“With what?”
Margaret looked at Daniel.
“With you.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What did he do?”
“He told me that if I ever revealed the truth, he would destroy you.”
“You let me believe you were my mother.”
“I loved you.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“And Emily?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I was afraid.”
Lena shook her head.
“You were afraid for thirty-six years.”
Margaret whispered:
“Fear becomes a prison.”
The family lawyer arrived that afternoon.
His name was Andrew Miller.
He brought a thick folder.
“The trust was established in 1989.”
Lena looked at the documents.
“Who owns it?”
“The biological heir.”
Emily stared.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you.”
Emily shook her head.
“I don't want money.”
Andrew nodded.
“You are not required to accept it.”
“What is in the trust?”
“Shares in Whitmore Holdings.”
Daniel looked at him.
“How much?”
Andrew hesitated.
“Approximately forty percent of the company.”
The room went silent.
Lena looked at Emily.
Emily shook her head.
“This is insane.”
Andrew continued.
“However, there is a problem.”
“What?”
“The trust was transferred to another name.”
“Whose?”
Andrew looked at Daniel.
“Daniel Whitmore.”
Daniel went completely still.
Lena stared.
“Your father made him the legal heir.”
“But he isn't the biological heir.”
“Exactly.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Andrew handed him the document.
Daniel read it.
His face turned pale.
“I never signed this.”
“You were a child.”
“Then why is my name on it?”
“Because your father used your identity.”
Lena looked at Margaret.
“You allowed this.”
Margaret whispered:
“I didn't know.”
“Not until when?”
“Until it was too late.”
The truth became clear.
Thomas had built the Whitmore empire on a lie.
He had taken control of Rachel's inheritance.
He had created a false heir.
He had hidden Emily.
And he had used Margaret to protect the secret.
But now the secret was exposed.
That evening, a message arrived.
A single sentence.
STOP LOOKING FOR ME.
It came from an unknown number.
Then another.
OR YOUR SON WILL PAY.
Lena's blood ran cold.
She immediately called Daniel.
“Where is Eli?”
“At home with the sitter.”
“Go get him.”
“What happened?”
“I'll explain later.”
Daniel rushed to Lena's apartment.
The door was open.
The babysitter was unconscious on the floor.
Eli was gone.
Lena screamed his name.
A note lay on the kitchen table.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.
Lena collapsed against the counter.
Daniel stared at the note.
Then he whispered:
“My father.”
May you like
Lena looked at him.
“Find him.”
