Chapter 14 - THE LITTLE BOY WITH THE COBBLER
The location was an abandoned Whitmore warehouse.
Lena arrived alone.
But she was not truly alone.
Police surrounded the building.
Daniel and Emily watched from a nearby vehicle.
Margaret had insisted on coming.
Lena walked inside.
The warehouse was dark.
“Thomas!”
Her voice echoed.
A light turned on.
Eli sat in a chair.
His hands were not tied.
But a man stood behind him.
Thomas Whitmore.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Lena had seen his photograph hundreds of times.
Thomas smiled.
“You look just like your mother.”
“Let my son go.”
“You have something I want.”
“The documents.”
“Yes.”
Lena held up the folder.
“Take them.”
Thomas laughed.
“You think this is about money?”
“Isn't it?”
“It is about power.”
Lena looked at him.
“You destroyed your entire family for power.”
Thomas's expression changed.
“I built that family.”
“No. You built a lie.”
Eli looked at Lena.
“Mommy!”
Lena took a step forward.
Thomas raised a hand.
“Stay there.”
Lena stopped.
Thomas looked at the folder.
“Give it to me.”
She held it out.
He walked toward her.
At that moment, Eli suddenly shouted:
“Mommy, I found a blackberry!”
Thomas turned.
Lena moved.
She kicked the folder toward the side.
Thomas grabbed for it.
The police stormed in.
Within seconds, Thomas was on the ground.
Eli ran into Lena's arms.
She held him so tightly he could barely breathe.
“Mommy!”
“I've got you.”
“I'm sorry.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
Thomas was arrested.
The documents were recovered.
The Whitmore empire collapsed within weeks.
The company was placed under investigation.
Margaret lost her fortune.
Her homes were seized.
Her name disappeared from charity boards.
For the first time in sixty-five years, she had nothing.
Except the truth.
Emily received the inheritance.
She refused to take control of the company.
Instead, she created a foundation in her mother's name.
Daniel gave up his claim to the trust.
He wanted nothing from the money.
Lena watched him sign the documents.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I spent my whole life being given things that were never mine.”
He looked at Emily.
“She deserves what was stolen from her.”
Margaret watched from across the room.
She had lost everything.
