Chapter 5 - The Man Who Refused to Die

Thomas Kessler raised the syringe.

“Move away from the bed.”

Rachel did not move.

Maya began crying behind her.

The fire alarm continued to pulse through the corridor. Red lights flashed over Thomas’s face, making him appear and disappear in the darkness.

“What is in that syringe?” Rachel asked.

“Something that will make this easier.”

“For whom?”

“For everyone.”

Rachel reached behind her and felt along the bed rail.

Her fingers found the metal water pitcher.

Thomas stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what your husband’s family did.”

“I understand that you used my sister to poison my child.”

“Vanessa volunteered.”

“She didn’t know you were alive.”

“She knew enough.”

Rachel hurled the pitcher.

Thomas turned his head. It struck his shoulder, knocking the syringe from his hand.

Rachel lunged for the emergency button on the wall, but Thomas grabbed her hair and pulled her backward.

She screamed.

Maya cried out, “Mommy!”

Thomas wrapped an arm around Rachel’s throat.

“You were supposed to drink the coffee and wake up confused. The doctors would call it emotional shock. Vanessa would present the petition, and I would recover what was stolen from me.”

“You stole it first.”

His grip tightened.

The door shook as someone tried to enter.

Rachel had locked it.

“Rachel!” Daniel shouted.

Thomas dragged her toward the bathroom.

She kicked backward, striking his injured knee.

He grunted and lost his balance.

Rachel broke free and unlocked the door.

Daniel burst inside with two security officers.

Thomas snatched the syringe from the floor and pressed it against Rachel’s neck.

“Back away.”

Everyone froze.

Lena appeared behind the guards, her weapon raised.

“Drop it, Kessler.”

Thomas smiled.

“You always were too late, Detective.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I know everyone who has touched this case.”

He pulled Rachel toward the bathroom vent.

Daniel took one slow step forward.

“You want the trust,” he said. “Take it.”

Thomas’s gaze shifted.

“I will sign control of the foundation over to you,” Daniel continued. “Every account. Every property.”

“You cannot transfer what is already mine.”

“You need authorization from a Mercer family beneficiary.”

Rachel realized Daniel was lying. But Thomas wanted to believe him.

The syringe moved slightly away from her neck.

That was enough.

Rachel slammed her heel onto Thomas’s foot and dropped her weight.

Lena fired.

The bullet struck Thomas’s upper arm.

He collapsed, and the syringe skidded beneath the bed.

Security officers restrained him.

Daniel pulled Rachel into his arms.

Maya screamed until Rachel climbed beside her and held her.

The fire in the supply closet had been deliberately started. Thomas had bribed a hospital contractor to provide a uniform and access card.

When officers searched him, they found photographs, keys, forged documents, and a small recording device.

He also carried a flash drive encrypted with military-grade software.

“Whatever is on this,” Lena said, “he was willing to kill for it.”

Thomas was taken to a secure medical unit under armed guard.

Rachel expected the nightmare to ease.

Instead, it deepened.

At six in the morning, Lena received a call from the jail.

Vanessa had been attacked in her cell.

She survived, but someone had written a black triangle on the wall using her blood.

Thomas had been inside the hospital when it happened.

He was not working alone.

Vanessa finally agreed to talk.

Rachel watched the interview through one-way glass.

Her sister had a bandage over her forehead and bruises around her neck.

“I never knew his real name,” Vanessa said. “He called himself Mr. Gray.”

“Thomas Kessler?” Lena asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“He said Rachel stole Dad’s money. He showed me bank statements.”

“Did he tell you to kill Maya?”

“No. He said the drops would cause a mild reaction. Enough to send her to the hospital.”

“You crushed beta-blockers into the drink.”

“He gave me the powder. I thought it was a stabilizer.”

Lena placed the security transcript on the table.

“You said Maya would not be a problem.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I was angry. I wanted Rachel to suffer. But I never wanted Maya dead.”

Rachel felt no sympathy.

Not yet.

“Who attacked you?” Lena asked.

Vanessa looked toward the camera, as though she knew Rachel was watching.

“I didn’t see her face.”

“Her?”

“She smelled like Rachel’s perfume.”

Rachel stopped breathing.

Vanessa continued.

“And she whispered something before she left.”

“What?”

“She said, ‘A mother should never choose one daughter over another.’”

Rachel turned toward Evelyn, who stood beside her.

Her mother’s face had gone white.

“I know who said that,” Evelyn whispered.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked terrified.

“My sister.”

Rachel had grown up believing her mother was an only child.

But Evelyn now confessed that she had once had a younger sister named Celeste.
