Chapter 9 - The Third Name

Rachel reached the guesthouse before midnight.

Daniel stood in the living room with blood on his shirt.

“What happened?”

“He hit me from behind.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t see his face.”

Daniel had found the back door open and Maya’s bracelet on the floor. When he turned, someone struck him with a heavy object.

Police dogs followed Maya’s scent to the road, where it disappeared.

A vehicle had been waiting.

Lena examined the guesthouse security system. The intruder used an administrator code known only to hospital management.

The secure property belonged to St. Matthew’s Hospital.

Dr. Patel had arranged it.

Rachel resisted the thought.

“He saved Maya.”

“He also knew where she was staying,” Lena said.

But Dr. Patel had been performing surgery during the abduction.

Hospital logs confirmed it.

Another administrator had accessed the code.

Margaret Mercer.

Daniel’s mother.

Rachel turned toward him.

“You said your mother did not know the trust’s full value.”

“I didn’t think she did.”

Margaret had served on the hospital foundation board for fifteen years. She also held a position in the Mercer family foundation—the organization that would inherit Maya’s trust if Maya died.

Police went to her home.

It was empty.

Her phone had been turned off.

A search of financial records showed Margaret had transferred money to Thomas Kessler’s offshore account for years.

Daniel sat down heavily.

“My mother funded them.”

Rachel felt betrayed in a new direction.

Margaret had always been cold toward her, but she had adored Maya.

Or pretended to.

A message arrived from Margaret’s phone.

It included a photograph of Maya sleeping on a couch.

Bring the trust authorization to the old Mercer estate. Alone.

Daniel knew the property.

It was a ruined mansion outside the city, abandoned after his grandfather’s death.

“She wants me,” he said.

“She asked for the authorization.”

“I am the family beneficiary.”

Rachel grabbed his arm.

“You are not going alone.”

Lena organized a covert response, but Margaret warned that she had cameras around the estate.

She demanded Daniel arrive by dawn.

During the drive, Daniel confessed everything he had withheld.

His grandfather’s foundation had nearly collapsed years earlier after Thomas stole millions. Margaret secretly covered the losses using loans.

“If the theft became public, she would lose the hospital board seat and face fraud charges,” Daniel said.

“So she helped Thomas hide it?”

“She must have.”

Maya’s trust contained the last large reserve that could erase the foundation’s debts.

Margaret had likely intended to use Vanessa’s guardianship claim, then redirect the money through false medical expenses.

Celeste wanted revenge.

Thomas wanted money.

Margaret wanted survival.

Each had used the others.

At the estate, Daniel entered carrying a folder filled with false authorization papers.

Rachel and Lena watched through a thermal drone.

Margaret waited in the ruined ballroom.

Maya sat beside her, awake but frightened.

Daniel approached slowly.

“Let her go.”

“Give me the documents.”

“You kidnapped your granddaughter.”

“I protected what your father built.”

“My father is dead.”

“His name is not.”

Daniel placed the folder on a table.

Margaret opened it.

The pages were blank.

Her face twisted.

“You think this is a game?”

She grabbed Maya.

Daniel moved forward.

A man emerged from behind a pillar and pressed a gun to his back.

It was Margaret’s driver, Raymond Cole.

The third conspirator.

He had taken the photograph in Rachel’s bedroom. He had helped Celeste enter the hospital. He had attacked Vanessa in jail while disguised as a medical transporter.

Raymond forced Daniel to his knees.

Margaret demanded the real authorization.

Daniel looked toward a broken window—the signal for agents to move.

But Maya suddenly cried, “Grandma, why are you doing this?”

Margaret froze.

For the first time, shame crossed her face.

“I’m saving our family.”

“You’re hurting it.”

The words came from a seven-year-old, but they struck with more force than any accusation.

Raymond noticed movement outside.

He fired toward the window.

Agents returned fire.

Daniel knocked Margaret’s arm away and grabbed Maya.

Rachel ran into the ballroom with Lena.

Raymond fled through a side door.

Margaret reached for the fallen gun.

Rachel kicked it away.

“You do not get to call this protection.”

Margaret looked at Maya hiding against Daniel.

“I never meant for her to be harmed.”

“You helped people who poisoned her.”

“I thought Vanessa would use only enough to create a medical crisis.”

“You gambled with her life.”

Margaret began to cry.

Lena handcuffed her.

Outside, agents searched the grounds for Raymond.

They found his car.

They found blood.

But they did not find him.

Inside the vehicle was a folder containing passports and airline tickets.

One ticket bore Maya’s name.

Another bore Rachel’s.

The destination was Argentina.

Raymond had planned to take them out of the country.

But there was a third ticket.

The passenger’s name shocked Daniel.

Dr. Samuel Lowe.

The psychiatrist was not merely a paid evaluator.

May you like

He was Raymond Cole’s brother.

And he had escaped federal custody less than an hour earlier.
