Chapter 7 - MARK COMES CRAWLING BACKThree weeks changed everything.

My mother moved into the Whitmore estate.

Federal investigators opened inquiries into Charles Whitmore’s finances.

Apex Global suspended Mark indefinitely.

Chloe Davenport was questioned about the necklace.

And Eleanor withdrew her theft accusation so quickly her attorney nearly injured himself filing the paperwork.

My school reinstated me.

The principal apologized.

Parents sent flowers.

One little boy gave me a crayon drawing that said MISS SARAH IS NICE.

That meant more than anything money could buy.

I returned to work.

Jonathan offered a driver.

I refused.

He offered security.

I refused that too.

Then someone photographed me outside school.

The next morning, Jonathan assigned security anyway.

We compromised on one plainclothes officer.

My divorce moved forward.

Mark contested it.

Not because he wanted me.

Because he wanted access.

He called.

Emailed.

Sent flowers.

Apologies.

Then jewelry.

I returned everything.

Finally, he appeared outside the preschool.

He looked terrible.

No tailored suit.

No expensive watch.

Just a wrinkled shirt and desperation.

“Sarah.”

I stopped.

My security officer moved closer.

Mark raised his hands.

“I just want five minutes.”

“You had three years.”

His face twisted.

“I deserve that.”

“No, you don’t.”

He swallowed.

“I ended things with Chloe.”

I stared.

“Congratulations.”

“She used me.”

That almost made me laugh.

“You left your wife for a CEO’s daughter and discovered she was ambitious?”

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.”

“Sarah—”

“You threw me into the rain.”

His eyes filled.

“I didn’t throw you out.”

“You stood there while your mother did.”

That hit harder.

He looked away.

“My mother controlled me.”

“No. She enabled you.”

He flinched.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

“I still do.”

“No.”

He looked shocked.

“I know what your love looks like now.”

I started walking.

He called after me.

“I can prove I didn’t know about the necklace!”

I stopped.

He hurried closer.

“Chloe and Mom planned that.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“I didn’t know until afterward.”

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because Chloe has something bigger.”

I stared.

“She has documents from her father’s office. Charles Whitmore has been using Apex Global accounts.”

My pulse changed.

“What accounts?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

He looked exhausted.

“But I know where Chloe keeps the files.”

That evening, James verified enough of Mark’s claim to take it seriously.

Apex had unusual transfers to subsidiaries linked to Charles.

We arranged a meeting.

Mark came to the estate.

Jonathan almost threw him out.

My mother actually tried.

I stopped them.

Mark handed over a key.

“Chloe has a safe-deposit box.”

“How do you know?” James asked.

“She gave me access.”

“Why?”

Mark looked ashamed.

“She thought we were getting married.”

My mother muttered something unrepeatable.

James took the key.

The box contained documents.

Bank transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Payment records to Robert Hale.

And one file that changed everything.

A life insurance policy.

Insured: Elizabeth Whitmore.

Beneficiary: Charles Whitmore-controlled trust.

Value: $75 million.

Jonathan went silent.

Mark stared at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

I almost believed he meant it.

Then James entered.

“Charles has disappeared.”

Jonathan stood.

“When?”

“Private aircraft departed Chicago last night.”

“Destination?”

“Flight plan listed Toronto. Aircraft diverted.”

“Where?”

James looked at my mother.

“Unknown.”

Then he placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a young woman leaving a hotel.

Chloe.

“She disappeared too.”

Mark stared.

“No.”

James nodded.

“Her father claims he doesn’t know where she is.”

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I opened the message.

A photograph loaded.

Eleanor.

Bound to a chair.

Blood on her forehead.

Mark made a strangled sound.

Then text appeared.

SARAH WHITMORE. BRING ELIZABETH TO LAKE HOUSE 17.

NO POLICE.

NO SECURITY.

OR MARK’S MOTHER DIES.

Mark looked at me.

His face collapsed.

“Sarah.”

Jonathan immediately said, “No.”

My mother stood.

“I’ll go.”

“No,” Jonathan snapped.

Elizabeth turned on him.

“This started because of me.”

“It started because of Charles.”

Mark stared at the photograph of his mother.

His hands shook.

“Please.”

I looked at him.

Three weeks earlier, Eleanor had thrown me into the rain.

She had called me a stray dog.

She had tried to frame me.

Now she was terrified.

And I discovered something about myself.

I didn’t want her dead.

“James,” I said.

Jonathan looked at me sharply.

“What are you thinking?”

“We go.”

“No.”

“We make Charles believe we’re following his rules.”

James understood immediately.

“And we control everything he can’t see.”

Jonathan stared at me.

“You sound like your mother.”

Elizabeth almost smiled.

That night, we drove toward Lake House 17.

My mother sat beside me.

Mark came too.

Jonathan hated that.

But Mark had insisted.

At exactly midnight, we reached the lake.

The house stood dark.

One light glowed inside.

We entered.

Eleanor was there.

So was Chloe.

And standing beside them, holding a pistol—

was Charles Whitmore.

He looked at me.

May you like

Then smiled.

“Finally.”
