Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BURNEDCharles Whitmore looked like Jonathan.

That was the first thing that disturbed me.
Same silver hair.
Same sharp cheekbones.
Same commanding posture.
But where Jonathan’s eyes held grief, Charles’s held nothing.
He pointed the gun at my mother.
“Elizabeth.”
Her body stiffened.
“Charles.”
He smiled.
“You’ve aged.”
“So have you.”
Behind him, Chloe looked terrified.
Eleanor was tied to a chair, tape across her mouth.
Mark moved toward her.
Charles swung the weapon.
“Stop.”
Mark froze.
“Untie my mother.”
Charles laughed.
“You’re very brave for a man who abandoned his wife because she taught children for a living.”
Mark went red.
I stared at Charles.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Your shares.”
Jonathan had recently transferred a small portion of Whitmore Holdings voting stock into a trust in my name.
I hadn’t wanted it.
Charles apparently did.
“You think I’ll sign something?”
“I think Elizabeth will.”
My mother stared.
Charles smiled.
“Sarah’s trust is structured through Elizabeth’s surviving-line inheritance rights.”
Jonathan had explained none of this.
Charles continued.
“Elizabeth signs control to me. Sarah signs acknowledgment. Everyone lives.”
“And if we refuse?”
Charles looked at Eleanor.
Then fired.
The bullet struck the floor beside her chair.
Eleanor screamed behind the tape.
Mark lunged.
Two armed men grabbed him.
“Enough!” I shouted.
Charles smiled.
“There she is.”
“What?”
“The Whitmore temper.”
I stepped forward.
“You spent fifteen years terrorizing my mother because you were afraid of losing money.”
“No.”
He tilted his head.
“I spent fifteen years controlling risk.”
My mother’s face twisted.
“You tried to kill me.”
“I tried to scare you.”
“You bombed my car.”
“That was Hale getting creative.”
Charles shrugged.
“Good employees are difficult.”
I felt sick.
Behind Charles, Chloe whispered, “You said nobody would die.”
He turned.
She instantly regretted speaking.
“You were useful because you had access to your father’s company.”
Chloe paled.
“That wasn’t our agreement.”
Charles laughed.
“You genuinely thought I cared who you married?”
Mark looked at her.
“Chloe?”
She stared at him.
Something ugly became clear.
Mark had used me for status.
Chloe had used Mark for access.
Charles had used Chloe for financial crime.
Every betrayal had another betrayal behind it.
Then Charles looked at me.
“Sign.”
A document was placed on the table.
I picked up the pen.
My mother whispered, “Sarah, don’t.”
I looked at Eleanor.
Her face was soaked with tears.
Then at Mark.
Then Chloe.
Then Charles.
And I signed.
Charles smiled.
Then I dropped the pen.
“You should read the last page.”
His smile faded.
“What?”
“Page eight.”
He flipped.
His expression changed.
There was no signature line.
There was a handwritten message.
YOU TALK TOO MUCH.
Charles looked up.
A red laser dot appeared on his chest.
Then another.
Then another.
James’s voice came through hidden speakers.
“Federal agents! Drop the weapon!”
Chaos exploded.
Charles fired toward the windows.
Agents breached the side doors.
Mark threw himself over Eleanor.
My mother dragged Chloe down.
I hit the floor.
Gunfire erupted.
One of Charles’s men surrendered.
Another ran.
Charles grabbed me.
His arm locked around my neck.
The gun pressed against my temple.
“BACK OFF!”
Everything stopped.
James appeared near the doorway.
Weapon raised.
“Let her go.”
Charles dragged me backward.
I could feel his heart pounding.
“You think Jonathan wins?” he whispered.
“This family was mine before she came back.”
I looked toward my mother.
She was crying.
Mark held Eleanor.
Chloe crouched behind the table.
Then I remembered something.
Preschoolers bite when scared.
Adults forget.
I drove my teeth into Charles’s wrist.
He screamed.
The gun shifted.
I slammed my heel onto his foot.
James fired.
Charles collapsed.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
Agents swarmed him.
He screamed as they cuffed him.
“You ungrateful little—”
Jonathan walked through the doorway.
Charles went silent.
Jonathan stood over his brother.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Jonathan said, “You stole my daughter.”
Charles laughed through pain.
“I saved this company.”
“You stole fifteen years.”
“You would have ruined everything for Elizabeth.”
Jonathan looked toward my mother.
Then me.
“Yes.”
Charles frowned.
Jonathan continued.
“I would have burned every building I owned to keep them safe.”
Charles’s smile vanished.
“You were too arrogant to understand that.”
He turned away.
Charles was taken outside.
Eleanor was freed.
The second the tape came off her mouth, she began sobbing.
Mark hugged her.
Then Eleanor looked at me.
I expected gratitude.
Instead, she looked ashamed.
“Sarah.”
I said nothing.
“You came for me.”
“Yes.”
“After everything I did.”
“Yes.”
She began crying harder.
“Why?”
I thought about it.
Then answered.
“Because I refuse to become you.”
She lowered her head.
Outside, flashing lights filled the lake road.
Charles Whitmore had finally been arrested.
But the night wasn’t over.
One federal agent approached Jonathan.
“Sir.”
Jonathan turned.
“We have an issue.”
“What?”
The agent looked toward Chloe.
“Richard Davenport has disappeared.”
Chloe stood.
“My father?”
“He left his residence six hours ago.”
James’s expression hardened.
The agent continued.
“We also found evidence that he authorized several of Charles’s transfers.”
Chloe’s face went blank.
“My father worked with Charles?”
Mark stared at her.
Chloe began shaking.
Then she whispered something I barely heard.
“He knows about the baby.”
Everyone froze.
Mark turned slowly.
“What baby?”
Chloe closed her eyes.
She placed both hands over her stomach.
“I’m pregnant.”
Mark’s face drained.
I looked away.
Some part of me had expected pain.
Instead, I felt strangely calm.
Mark stared at Chloe.
“Is it mine?”
May you like
She didn’t answer.
And suddenly, for the first time, Mark understood exactly what uncertainty felt like.
