Chapter 7 - The Trap Inside Mercer RidgeFear does strange things to time.

Barefoot.

No coat.

Blood on one sleeve.

Security called before letting her upstairs.

Daniel raced toward the elevator.

I stopped him.

“Wait.”

“She's my wife.”

“She may also be part of this.”

Then the elevator doors opened.

Vanessa stepped out.

The confident woman from the wedding was gone.

Her makeup was streaked.

Her hair hung loose.

She looked at Daniel.

Then collapsed.

We called Detective Hayes.

While we waited, Ellen cleaned the cut on Vanessa's forearm.

I watched my wife kneel beside the woman who had struck her two days earlier.

“You don't have to do that,” I said.

Ellen didn't look up.

“I know.”

Vanessa began crying.

Not theatrically.

Not strategically.

She cried like someone whose world had finally cracked open.

When Nora arrived, Vanessa asked for an attorney.

Smart.

Ellie came thirty minutes later.

After a private conversation, Vanessa agreed to speak.

She told us Richard had never planned to save Cole Development.

He planned to take Mercer Ridge.

Vanessa had known part of it.

Not everything.

Her assignment had been simple: marry Daniel, isolate him, pressure him to gain control of the company.

She insisted she believed her father only wanted a business rescue.

“You expect us to believe that?” Claire asked.

“No.”

Vanessa looked at Ellen.

“I don't expect any of you to believe me.”

“Did you know about the insurance policies?” Nora asked.

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“My father said they were leverage.”

“Leverage for what?” I asked.

“To pressure Daniel.”

“How does insuring my death pressure Daniel?”

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then Ellen spoke.

“You knew someone might hurt us.”

Vanessa began shaking.

“I knew my father had dangerous people around him.”

“That isn't what she asked,” Nora said.

Vanessa whispered, “Yes.”

Daniel looked as if she had stabbed him.

“And you married me anyway?”

She stared at him.

“I was raised to believe family loyalty mattered more than anything.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So you destroyed mine.”

She didn't argue.

Nora leaned forward.

“What happened tonight?”

Vanessa said Richard discovered Daniel copied files from his laptop.

He became furious.

He ordered Vanessa to get Daniel and leave Boston immediately.

When she refused, he struck her.

She escaped through a garage door.

“Where was he going?”

“I don't know.”

“Who is Victor Salerno?”

Vanessa went pale.

“My father borrowed money from him.”

“Is he involved in the insurance scheme?”

“I don't know.”

Nora studied her.

“What do you know?”

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“My father said Victor doesn't care whether people pay him in cash or companies.”

She looked at me.

“And he wants Mercer Ridge.”

Why?

That became the question.

Mercer Ridge wasn't a glamorous company.

We manufactured specialized components for medical equipment and aircraft systems.

Profitable, yes.

Strategic, perhaps.

But why would an underground lender want it?

The answer came from Claire.

She had been scrolling through the files Daniel copied.

“Dad.”

She turned the laptop toward me.

“Look at this.”

A spreadsheet listed Mercer Ridge contracts.

One name was highlighted.

Aegis Aerospace Systems.

A defense contractor.

Our plant produced a precision component used in navigation assemblies.

It wasn't classified.

But it was highly regulated.

Ellie understood immediately.

“Control of Mercer Ridge could create access.”

“To what?” Ellen asked.

“Supply chains,” I said.

“Technology?”

“Possibly.”

Nora stood.

“This goes beyond financial fraud.”

She began making calls.

By sunrise, federal agents were involved.

The situation had grown far beyond our family.

Yet the part that hurt most remained painfully small.

My son sat across from his new wife.

He couldn't look at her.

Finally he asked, “Was any of it real?”

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?”

“Us.”

She cried again.

“I don't know.”

That answer destroyed him.

He stood and walked onto the balcony.

Ellen started to follow.

I touched her arm.

“No.”

“He's hurting.”

“So were you.”

She looked at me.

“He's still our son.”

“Yes.”

“But he has to learn we can't save him from every consequence.”

That was the hardest sentence my wife had ever spoken.

Later that morning, Vanessa was taken into protective custody.

Daniel wasn't arrested immediately, but his passport was surrendered.

He faced potential charges related to financial fraud and assault.

He didn't complain.

Before leaving with his attorney, he approached Ellen.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

He flinched.

“I just want you to know…”

He struggled.

“I remember you on that floor every second.”

Ellen's eyes filled.

“So do I.”

He nodded.

Then left.

Three days passed.

Richard remained missing.

Victor Salerno couldn't be located.

Federal investigators dismantled the shell companies one by one.

More money surfaced.

More documents.

And then, just when I believed we were finally moving toward answers, Mercer Ridge suffered a systems breach.

At two fourteen in the morning, the plant's security network went offline.

Someone entered using an executive-level access card.

My access card.

The card was still in my wallet.

A cloned credential.

Security footage showed a masked man moving through the research wing.

He remained inside for eleven minutes.

Nothing appeared stolen.

But before leaving, he stopped beneath a camera.

Looked directly into it.

Then held up a handwritten note.

When investigators enhanced the image, there were five words.

DROP THE CASE OR LOSE HER.

Beneath the message was a photograph.

Ellen.

May you like

Taken that morning.

Outside Claire's building.
